In this sweeping and romantic epic, Colin Farrell and Salma Hayek are passionate lovers who struggle together to achieve their dreams amid the beauty and challenges of Depression-era Los Angeles. Robert Towne directs. From the director of CHINATOWN comes a tale of small-town dreams and big-city challenges. Colin Farrell plays a down-and-out writer in 1930s L.A. who dreams of making it big, and Salma Hayek plays his lover, a waitress who also wants to rise above her station. Theatrical Release, March 10, 2006 Ask The Dust Reviews: "Towne recreates the era in loving detail....Caleb Deschanel's rich, dark cinematography adds to the sense that this is not intended as a realistic portrayal of LA."

Ask The Dust Movie Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) A love story - opposite attractions... L.A. in the early 1930's: racism, poverty, and disease color the Bunker Hill neighborhood of L. A. where Arturo Bandini, a fledgling Italian-American writer, has arrived from Colorado to write the great Los Angeles novel. He is down to his last nickel after some time of not being very successful in his writing. He visits a local eatery where he orders a cup of coffee, served by Camilla Lopez, beautiful, self-possessed, and Mexican. Arturo gets advice, encouragement, and an occasional check from his publisher, so he keeps writing and he keeps seeing Camilla. He seems mean to her for no apparent reason, so the relationship sputters. Remember, this happens at a time when ‘politically correct’ was not a phrase.
Collin Farrell is in the male lead (actually Irish) and has absolutely no Irish accent and Salma Hayek in the female lead with her natural accent and cadence of the English language make this story very believable. Donnald Southerland plays a supporting part and is invaluable to this movie and it’s outcome.
I would recommend this movie to anyone who is or ever was hopelessly in love against all odds. Submitted by drakar (Del Norte, CO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$23.79 A magical, musical nanny brings a breath of fresh air into the stuffy Banks household in turn-of-the-century England. Overstuffed with gaiety, this children's fantasy is filled to the brim with wonderful dance numbers and outrageous songs (such as the seemingly unpronounceable "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"). The film's seamless blending of live-action with animation was a marvel in its day. This is Andrews' film debut and Darwell's last film appearance. Academy Award Nominations: 13, including Best ...

$9.69 Dakota Fanning and Robert De Niro slug it out for top acting honors in this creepy psychodrama. After his wife is found dead in the bathtub, Manhattan psychologist David Callaway (De Niro) decides to take his traumatized child, Emily (Fanning), to live in a big, gloomy country house upstate. The shadow of the twisty backyard woods--or something darker--soon creeps over the house and Emily finds a weird friend named Charlie, who her father believes is only imaginary. Charlie likes to play games, and is also very jealous of anyone who tries to come between Emily and her dad, like an attractive local divorcee (Elizabeth Shue) and Emily's New York psychiatrist (Famke Jannsen).
Director John Polson takes his time letting the little details of the story accrue in the patently somber tradition of directors like M. Night Shyamalan. John Ottman's score is spooky, the photography is drenched in warm colors, and the mood is relentlessly strange and unsettling. De Niro is fine as a wheezing, aging doctor who can't seem to fathom the extent to which his domestic situation has moved past his control. Of course there's a shocking twist or two, plenty of jolts, red herrings, and sinister woodland explorations (including a dark and foreboding cave), but the spookiest ingredient in this potboiler ...

$8.69 Director Craig Brewer follows up his unexpectedly well-received pimp drama, HUSTLE AND FLOW, with this stylish tale of the unlikely connections that are forged when a lost soul attempts to cure a young nymphomaniac of her wicked ways. Set deep down south in a small Tennessee town, the film is titled after and largely driven by the force of blues music. Pulsating with color and bold cinematography, the story forms a visual counterpart to a blues ballad. When divorced ex-musician Lazarus (Samuel L. Jackson) finds Rae (Christina Ricci) badly beaten by the side of the road, he brings her to his house and chains her to his radiator. Rae has been a wreck since her boyfriend (Justin Timberlake) went off to war, and has spent her time getting into fights and being taken advantage of by just about every man in town. Rae appears to be afflicted with a physical need for sex that no one can cure. As Lazarus watches Rae twitching with pain on his couch, he sees that the young woman's only chance at redemption is in his hands.
While the premise is outlandish, and the film opens itself up for much moral criticism, BLACK SNAKE MOAN has its merits. Deliciously colorful, the film aches with rhythm and dances visually with its subjects. Whether fetishizing Christina Ricci's emaciated body, or making Samuel L. Jackson look years older than he is in real life, the cameras do their job well. Both Ricci and Jackson offer strong ...
