This CD is EXCELLENT!
Holly Stell has a voice that is unbelievable! I saw an article in our local newspaper talking about her and decided to look further into it. I went to her website and listened and watched the video and was impressed. Bought the CD and was even more impressed. Never thought I would like or EVER buy ophra type music but this is wonderful. Beautiful songs....beautiful voice! Look forward to more work from her. I highly recommend it.

Earl Lewis & The Channels
New York's Finest CD (1990) 4 stars
CD $12.49 Buy It  Details
One of New York's finest early doo wop groups' early sides from 1956 to 1961 first recorded on Whirling Disc, Fury, and Port Records. Only two Gone releases (from 1957-1958) are missing -- must be a licensing problem. The Channels were not only unique vocally, Earl Lewis' leads rank up there and Clifton Wright's bass expressions gets A's for creativity; but if you didn't know the Channels were five African-Americans you could only guess at their ethnicity. As Eddie Levert (the O'Jays) once said about the song "Wildflower" the first time he heard it: "I thought it was a white guy trying to do a black thing but discovered it was a black guy (Donny Gerrard, an African-American, was Skylark's lead singer) doing a white thing." The Channels deliver buttery, stuttering doo wop at its best -- check out "I Really Love You," "Flames in My Heart," or "The Gleam in Your Eyes"; they were also exquisite at jump R&B, i.e., "What Do You Do" and "My Loving Baby." Lewis wrote many of these tracks only to find producer/record label owner Bobby Robinson's name listed as co-writer when the record came out. Such is music, such is life. Essential for doo wop lovers. ~ Andrew Hamilton Includes liner notes by Charlie Horner. Personnel: Earl Lewis (vocals). Liner Note Author: Charlie Horner.

Here's a band that has been together for years and whose name still hasn't really made it out of Los Angeles County. Well, that's just plain wrong. Their very good first CD from about five years ago was on SST Records, which would actually explain why no one's heard of them, as that once-great label now only puts out Greg Ginn side projects, and even those don't get promoted or distributed. This cd has been self-released by the band. Every time I listen to these guys, I have the same reaction: at first, I think Drew's vocals are going to be too indie-pop (or even grunge) for me, but then the band's trio playing just nullifies that, and pretty soon the vocals sound damn good, more like timeless crooning than genre-coattailing, with interesting, pretty melodies, and best of all, a very nice sense of sparsity. (i.e. the record seems about 60% instrumental. ) The band plays a lot of ...
