Keyboardist Marc Cary has teamed up with vocalist Shon "Chance" Miller for a collaboration dubbed the XR Project. Mixing Cary's acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes, and synthesizer sounds with Chance's hip-hop, rap, and contemporary R&B trappings, the two explore hard funk, space drift, superimposed poetry, prose, and hard-edged dance music. The excellent bassist Tarus Mateen is on the date, but there is no live drummer credited. On a limited level the group sound succeeds, especially for the instrumental numbers. "Pocket Lint" is involved, more pure musically and jammin'. A distinct Afro-Latin feel and Ron Sutton's alto sax inform the M-Base-derived "Across 125th." The modal piano of Cary on "All I Ever Wanted" sets up the closest thing to a pop song. "This Is" is more about what this is not or, according to the lyrics, "This is not a part of the formula." Touché. Actual singing during a funky tribute to Langston Hughes ("Dream Deferred") and the pretty harp-accented paean to the Harlem Renaissance ("The Res") work in context. Others pieces are a jumbled, dense, overlayed, underground labyrinthine rap-infused fusion of far too many elements. The music is not so much about the melody, and is only marginally inventive. Perhaps this sound has its audience in clubs, and it has a higher degree of artistry than most of the elements it is influenced by. Fans of Marc Cary's wonderful modern jazz recordings will want to revisit his previous efforts Focus, Listen, and Trillium, while followers of contemporary dance grooves could very easily get next to this. Buyer, be informed. ~ Michael G. Nastos

| | Trio Beyond Saudades CDs (2006)
Abstrakt/Blak CD music
$21.55 Trio Beyond is the name of the group that played at Queen Elizabeth's Hall in London, 2004. Jack DeJohnette initiated a project to pay tribute to the late Tony Williams' Lifetime -- with the late Larry Young on organ and guitarist John McLaughlin, all three were Miles alumni -- a band that, along with the Miles Davis band, spearheaded the jazz-rock fusion era. DeJohnette replaced Williams in the Davis group, and John Scofield is also a Miles alumnus; Larry Goldings had been approached by Williams in 1997 to put together an organ trio with a similar concept to Lifetime; Williams passed away shortly thereafter. The results on this double-disc album, Saudades, are explosive, dynamic, and utterly compelling. The repertoire comes from Lifetime's songbook. Spectrum: The Anthology and the intense stunner of a set closer "Emergency" come from the band's debut album of the same name, and ...

| | Dave Holland Critical Mass CD (2006)
Abstrakt/Blak album
$14.19 One word that comes to mind when listening to Critical Mass is generosity. Double-bassist Dave Holland, four decades into his career, could certainly be forgiven for taking the word "leader" at its literal meaning, calling all the shots and keeping his musicians at bay. But that's not what he's about, and at any given time Critical Mass could just as easily have been credited to saxist Chris Potter, trombonist ...

$16.09 TRIPLE SCOOP contains 3 LPs on 2 CDs: TRIPLE TREAT (1982)/TRIPLE TREAT II (1988)/TRIPLE TREAT III (1989).
California in March 1982 and June 1987. Originally released on Concord (4193), Concord (4338) & Concord (4394). Includes liner notes by Gordon Raddue, Ken Franckling and Philip Elwood.
One might be led into believing that the title Triple Scoop refers to the players who comprise this trio: pianist Monty Alexander, bassist Ray Brown, and guitarist Herb Ellis. While this would be a reasonable guess, the "Triple" actually refers to the three titles -- Triple Treat, Triple Treat, Vol. 2, and Triple Treat, Vol. 3 -- recorded by this talented trio and included on this two-disc set. The first set comes from a 1982 studio session while the latter two originate from live sessions in 1988 and 1989, respectively. Disc one kicks off with the surprising "(Meet the) Flinstones," a three-minute romp that's at least as much fun as the cartoon, before settling into a lovely, six-minute version of "Body and Soul." The similar tones of Alexander's piano and Ellis' guitar offer a harmonic richness, while their light touch imbues pieces like ...
