Strapping Young Lad is known for a particular sort of musical zaniness within the framework of its punk-metal sound; to their credit, they never shy away from extending metal's boundaries. That impulse reads stronger than ever on 2006's THE NEW BLACK as the band weaves in satiric commentary, jazz fusion, allusions to classic metal, and passages of surprising melodicism among the all-out-shredding heaviness. Frontman Devin Townsend is in fine form as a screamer and an unconventional lyricist (note the tirade of "You Suck"), but it is the band's ability to blend genres while delivering brain-crushing heavy metal that wins the day.

Strapping Young Lad: Devin Townsend (vocals, guitar, keyboards, sampler); Jed Simon (guitar); Byron Stroud (bass guitar); Gene Hoglan (drums).

Additional personnel: Oderus Urungus.

Alternative Press (p.222) - "Townsend's giddy love of metal's power-mad absurdity is extremely contagious."
CMJ (p.24) - "Townsend's cognitive quirks are the seat of his brilliance....[With] thicker grooves, whiplash riffs, and distinct melodies."

1 star What a piece of good ol garbage to put out
I like my Fear Factory record collection thank you very much. They're clones, but at least it has spark for a concept. Outside the five best tracks that I've culled, the rest is pure filler. That chugging is getting quite annoying and the vocals don't quite soar like I want them to. What the hell is up with that? You want to experiment this is hell on high heels.

2 stars What a disappointment after Alien.
How many times can Devin say f ck, s ck and f cker. You know your out of original lyrics when your CD is comprised of swears. Just a lot of old regurgitated SYL drums and guitars with lame vocals. Wasn't Byron Stroud in Fear Factory? Surely, they could come up with something better than this effort. I seem to remember this happening to White Zombie. Save your money.

Although often overshadowed by the Los Angeles and New York folk-rock scenes, San Francisco also contributed several notable bands. Among them are We Five, featuring Mike Stewart (vocals/guitar/banjo) -- brother of Kingston Trio member John Stewart -- Peter Fullerton (vocals/bass), Beverly Bivens (vocals), Bob Jones (guitar/vocals), and Jerry Bergan (guitar/vocals). The quintet was among the first Bay Area groups to have chart success merging acoustic-based folk music with electric instrumentation. This single CD, from mail-order archivists Collector's Choice Music, contains the quintet's first two long-players: You Were on My Mind and Make Someone Happy. Both titles are similar in style and content, charting the linear progression of pop music and its fusion with folk, rock & roll, and post-bop jazz. We Five shared this trait with more than a few of their regional contemporaries, including the pre-psychedelic Jefferson Airplane. The two even shared material -- most notably ...

Yaz Alexander is arguably the UK's finest female reggae recording artist having served her apprenticeship as a backing vocalist for some of the UK's most established reggae acts including Steel Pulse and Pato Banton.Yaz's vocal style is so cosmopolitan it naturally crosses over into any other genre of music you could care to mention and even though reggae is her first love, she also dabbles in Jazz, R'n'B and Neo Soul as well.Inspired by flamboyant female superstars past and present, Yaz particularly draws influence from Billie Holiday, Shirley Bassey and the first lady of diva, Diana Ross but because of her love for reggae - by default - Bob Marley is her number one musical inspiration and the influence of Bob is evident in almost every one of Yaz's lyrics - powerful, edifying, sometimes political but always containing a moral and/or message for the listener.Yaz has the sultriest of tones that leave most audiences mesmerized whenever she starts to sing and her passionate style is born out of her profound love of both reggae and jazz music. She is equally at home in both genres and hitherto she has collaborated with luminaries of the calibre of The Mighty Diamonds, Eddy Grant, Peter Hunnigale, Vivian Jones, Nerious Joseph, Musical Youth, Mercury Prize Award nominee and Mobo Award winner Soweto Kinch as well as veteran jazz legend, Andy Hamilton. The stage is the natural domain for Yaz Alexander and like all of the great stage artisans she works it artistically, creatively and professionally and always gives audiences something stimulating to focus on. The great thing about Yaz Alexander is not only does she look good, this wonderful young lady also has the natural God-given vocal ability to back up her sophisticated image.Album Review from reggae-vibes.comSince the emergence of the Lovers rock genre, kick-started by Louisa Marks' plaintive reading of Robert Parker's soul hit "Caught You In A Lie" in 1975, the UK reggae scene has proven to be a fertile ground for female singers. Those familiar with Lovers rock and other styles of reggae produced in the UK throughout the past 30 years need no introduction to artists like Janet Kay, Carroll Thompson, Joy Mack, Sandra Cross, Kofi, Janet Lee Davis, Barbara ...
