In the mid- to late '90s and early 2000s, some devotees of the Scandinavian metal scene categorized Sweden's Wolverine as melodic death metal; that is, metal that combines death metal elements (including a deep, guttural, demonic-sounding growl) with the nuance and melodic accessibility of classic '70s and '80s power metal. In some cases, melodic death metal has been influenced by progressive rock on top of power metal, and on the prog metal end of melodic death metal, it isn't impossible to find headbangers who hold Slayer, Entombed, Iron Maiden, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer in equally high regard. But it is difficult -- or even impossible -- to make a good argument for Still, Wolverine's third full-length album, being relevant to the melodic death metal style. Still is melodic metal, but there is nothing really death metal-ish about this CD, which is best described as simply prog metal. Drawing on influences that range from Dream Theater to Pink Floyd to Fates Warning, Wolverine provides an album that has a 2006 release date but is decidedly pre-'90s in its outlook; an album that worships the pre-Nevermind metal and prog rock bands of the '70s and '80s without apology. Nothing terribly original occurs -- don't expect Still to be the least bit groundbreaking -- but all of the songs (which are definitely on the melancholy side) are likeable, well-crafted and well-executed. Wolverine has an attractive sense of melody, and it is put it to good use on this 52-minute CD. Bottom line: Still it not a five-star treasure, although it's a decent outing that will appeal to the type of listener who has no problem getting into Queensr˙che's Operation: Mindcrime one minute and Pink Floyd's Animals the next.

| | Vanden Plas Christ.O CD (2006) Bonus Track
Still music CDs
$14.55 The bottom line for those who don't already know: Vanden Plas rocks. This German progressive metal band is disciplined, with excellent musicians who understand complexity and know how to employ it without it getting in the way of fine songwriting, emotional transference, and ultimately the kind of hair-raising excess that makes heavy metal such an enduring genre. Christ 0 is a concept album about a serial killer (the album is titled after him) and the man (Inspector X) who seeks to capture him. Should one find that concept to be clichéd, stop reading right now. These nine songs reflect a manner of composition, sublime taste, bone-crunching power, and breathtaking dynamics, along with an excellent use of texture and sonics not heard since Queensr˙che's classic Operation: Mindcrime. This is the story of a man betrayed, stripped of everything he loves, and convicted of a crime he did not commit -- and who ultimately loses his own humanity. The man who pursues him must confront the very things in himself that keep him obsessed with his prey. Musically, this is where the line between symphonic metal and the classic sounds ...

| | Porcupine Tree Stupid Dream CDs (1999) With DVD; Special Edition
Still album
$15.05 Porcupine Tree's first album for K-Scope/Snapper starts out with a definite bang -- "Even Less," with some of the quartet's biggest, blasting rock epic music yet, yet also shot through with the gentler, acoustic side that makes Porcupine Tree so intimate and lovely. The net result easily calls Yes to mind, but Steven Wilson's not so high-pitched as Jon Anderson and Richard Barbieri completely avoids Rick Wakeman's extreme idiocies -- prog that knows when less is more. With that as a fine signal for the album as a whole, Stupid Dream takes it from there -- Wilson as a songwriter and singer both sounds recharged and more ambitious, while the group collectively pours it on. The loud passages feel truly sky-smashing, the calmer ones perfectly close, and the overall sense of build and drama -- "A Smart Kid" is a fine example -- spot-on. Strings from the East of England Orchestra and guest work on Wilson's sometime Bass Communion partner Theo Travis add even lusher atmospheres without swamping the tunes. As always, the group isn't afraid to experiment where others merely re-create -- check out the funky breaks Colin Edwin and Chris Maitland lay down on "Slave Called Shiver," not to mention Wilson's catchy piano figure and Barbieri's Hammond organ fills. Lyrically, Wilson comes up with some of his best work yet. "Piano Lessons" looks back on past musical learning and ...

Still music CDs
$15.05 Pink Martini brings new definition to the word "eclectic." Bridging ethnic divides, this ensemble creates music that draws from jazz, Afro-Cuban, Asian, classical, and both Western and Eastern European folk traditions.
In addition to a myriad of world-music influences, HANG ON LITTLE TOMATO, Pink Martini's sophomore effort, features a total of six different languages. For example, "Kikuchiyo to Mohshimasu" explores the music of Japan; to help add authenticity to this track, Pink Martini invited a Japanese slide guitarist to sit in with the band. The record's opener, "Let's Never Stop Falling in Love," is a salsa ballad that highlights China Forbes's sultry voice; here she sings in English, but the music is clearly based on Latin rhythms. Since almost every musical style seems to be fair game, the title track boldly borrows from swing-era jazz, with this clarinet ballad harking back to the Golden Age of Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw. Throughout the album, Pink Martini's musical director, Thomas Lauderdale, assembles a colorful and varied mix of tunes that are sure to please adventurous listeners.
