The consistently well-selected and assembled two-disc GOLD compilations are almost always sure-fire bets, and the Dusty Springfield edition is no exception. Arranged chronologically, and spanning the breadth of her career, GOLD offers up 28 songs from the British diva, offering proof positive as to why she is revered by soul and pop fans alike.
Kicking off with "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" (the lone hit from Dusty's folk-pop outfit the Springfields) and her first solo single, "I Only Want to Be With You," listeners can chart the singer's trajectory right through to her 1987 collaboration with the synth-pop duo the Pet Shop Boys on "What Have I Done to Deserve This." In between are all the facets of the artist's sound, including tunes like "Son of a Preacher Man" and "Windmills of Your Mind" from her masterpiece, DUSTY IN MEMPHIS.  Good choice for overview of her music
I got this collection with 2 CDs because I wanted the hits I Only Want To Be With You,Wishin' And Hopin', You Don't Have To Say You Love Me, The Look Of Love, and Son Of A Preacher Man and two of them are on the second CD. I figured though that it was a good idea to get a collection with more songs. Her earlier work on the first CD is definitely better than the second CD, but this is still worth it for getting a good overview of her career. I like the Pet Shop Boys so #14 on the second CD, What Have I Done to Deserve This?, is nice to have on there, and a song that my husband likes is an interesting song Am I The Same Girl?, a vocal rendition of Young Holt Unlimited's "Soulful Strut".

In the 1960s and 1970s Carole Bayer Sager wrote such hits as "A Groovy Kind of Love" for Wayne Fontana and "I'd Rather Leave While I'm In Love" for Rita Coolidge. Pushed and promoted by Clive Davis, and produced by Brooks Arthur, Sager debuted her first solo album in 1977 with cameos by Peter Allen, Bette Midler, Tony Orlando, Nicky Hopkins, Brena Russell, Marvin Hamlisch, Madeline Kahn, and others.
This is actually an extraordinary album by the veteran songwriter who hit as far back as 1966 with "A Groovy Kind of Love." The little granny voice of Carole Bayer Sager is full of soul and passion -- so pure and fragile, it is a shame it never got to dominate the charts. The title track of Melissa Manchester's Home to Myself album is a total delight here, closing out this set; it was released four years after Manchester's version. It's a home run on a ten-song Brooks Arthur production that is full of big moments. Sager co-wrote Midnight Blue, Manchester's breakthrough hit on Arista, but "Home to Myself" was on the Bell imprint, presumably when Larry Uttall ran the label prior to Clive Davis coming onboard. With that in mind, these compact gems seem all the more precious, be it a lesser-known title like "Steal Away Again," co-written by Bette Midler and Bruce Roberts, or one of the many covers of her more popular titles: "I'd Rather Leave While I'm in Love," which Rita Coolidge brought to the Top 40 in 1980, three years after this incarnation; or "Come in From the Rain" and "You're Moving Out Today," two songs that were minor adult contemporary hits.
