Every teenage girl who has picked up a guitar since Jett's first band the Runaways hit the scene back in '75 owes her a huge debt of gratitude. While bandmate Lita Ford had the chops and Sue Thomas (who never recorded with them) found greater commercial success as Michael Steele with The Bangles, it was Joan Jett who embodied the punk attitude that would inform the "riot grrrl" movement twenty years later.
Unfortunately, the Runaways did not achieve the commercial success that their imitators enjoyed. Jett would later find that success in the MTV era, leading The Blackhearts. This compilation documents both her artistic and commercial triumphs. She topped the charts in '82 with "I Love Rock N Roll" and had several other top twenty hits including "Do You Wanna Touch Me? (Oh Yeah!)" and starred opposite Michael J. Fox in the film "Light Of Day." 15 years before Sleater-Kinney, she raised eyebrows by recording the Tommy James hit "Crimson And Clover" without changing the gender to reflect a (heterosexual) woman's point of view. FIT TO BE TIED makes certain that Jett will always be remembered for the ground she broke.

No one puts more belt into a rock song that Joan Jett, queen of the crunch chord. From the opening "Bad Reputation" through some eyebrow raising delights such as "Everyday People," Jett shows off her pure-power voice and fuzz-pedal guitar. She's not lying when she calls herself a "Cherry Bomb."

I Love Rock & Roll
I grew up on this stuff! And it still sounds as good as ever. Minus the crack and pop of vinyl of course. Joan Jett and her Blackhearts have delivered us her style of rock and roll for over 25 years now, and we have yet to be disapointed. Whether you rocking out with Bad Reputation, Do You Wanna Touch or I Hate Myself for Loving You ... or being hypnotized by her cover of the Classic Crimson and Clover and the huge hit Little Liar ... you still need something else. That something else is I Love Rock and Roll ... pull out your pens, hairbrushes, spoons or whatever else you will use for your air microphone, and of course tune up that air guitar, because I Love... is a true classic and you can't help but to get "young".

I love all the songs on this CD. My only problems with it are as follows. Cherry Bomb is a re-recording (I love the original Runaways version more). Love Is All Around is only 1 minute, but I have a download of the same song with an extra minute-and-a-half and a whole additional verse. The full version would have "fit". I take off 1 star for that and another because the CD is only 47-and-a-half minutes. They could have "fit" at least a few more lesser-known gems for this price (I don't remember Cherry Bomb being a hit for Joan Jett as a solo artist anyway). But the songs included are can't-miss crowd-pleasers (no "live" fillers either). Songs: 5 stars, except Love is All Around (3 stars for being edited). Compilation on a whole (as stated above): 3 stars. Side note: saw her on Leno recently, abs still tight as hell.
