| | Joan Jett I Love Rock 'N' Roll CD Joan Jett Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Every year there are several hit songs that will forever evoke that specific year for those who hear them. For instance, such tracks as Men At Work's "Who Can it Be Now?," Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger," and especially Joan Jett's "I Love Rock N' Roll," recall 1982 for many. Though the majority of early-'80s rock hits included a glossy production and synthesizers (AC/DC being a notable exception), Jett went the completely opposite route with her sophomore solo album, bashing out anthemic and raw rock with a clear punk edge.
The shout-along title track became a monster hit in the US, camping out at the Number One spot on the singles chart for several weeks. Along with her hit cover of Tommy James & The Shondells' "Crimson and Clover," Jett was responsible for two of the most consistently played clips of MTV's early history. Although not as stellar as her rock 'em sock 'em debut, 1981's BAD REPUTATION, I LOVE ROCK & ROLL remains one of Joan Jett's best and most popular albums.
Includes liner notes by Danny Solazzi.

1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version.
The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably ...

After spending the '70s as part of the influential all-girl rock group the Runaways, singer/guitarist Joan Jett launched a solo career after the band's 1979 dissolution. Although her former band's music definitely had a punk edge, ("Cherry Bomb," anyone?), Jett's debut release, 1981's BAD REPUTATION, makes clear that she had finally embraced punk ...

| | Melanie C This Time CD (2007)
I Love Rock 'N' Roll
$23.29 This Time around, Melanie C has decided to abandon any pretense that she either makes sprightly dance-pop or that she was once known as "Indie Spice" and devotes herself entirely to smooth, pseudo-sophisticated adult pop, the kind of stuff that's ideal for background music at dinner parties consisting of nothing but small plates. There are traces of Coldplay and muted Robbie Williams, along with a fair sampling of Texas and Dido, and it's all blended together into something that's sleek but not stylish, atmospheric without being moody, melodic without being hooky. Melanie C does just fine as a vocalist -- her thin voice has gained some character, she's learned how to milk turns of phrases to give them the appearance of emotion -- but the songs are so middle-brow mid-tempo that it's hard to care for such subtle innovations. Only when the failed single "I Want Candy" comes around as a bonus track at the end does the pulse quicken, but by that point it's too late: the album has long since done its job and lulled listeners into a soothing sleep. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
