In 1953, the West Coast studio reedman Bud Shank created a first by going into the studio with the Brazilian master guitarist Laurindo Almeida. A good eight years before Stan Getz conducted a similar experiment called JAZZ SAMBA (with non-Brazilian guitarist Charlie Byrd), Shank and Almeida produced a natural-born musical hybrid that still sounds startlingly contemporary today. There aren't too many 1953 jazz albums about which one could make the same claim.
The two musicians stick with mainly Brazilian material, featuring such highly regarded pre-bossa nova composers as Ary Barroso, Luis Gonzaga, and Pixinguinha. The only stateside detour is in the company of the romantic standards "Stairway to the Stars" and Kurt Weill's "Speak Low," both of which sound perfectly at home in this context, thanks to Almeida's incredible fluency and Shank's unmannered, freshly conceived improvisations.
The Brazilian guitarist and composer Laurindo Almeida was closely identified with four different major genres across a lengthy career which began as a staff guitarist and bandleader at a radio station in Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian music remained an essential constituent of much of his subsequent work, whether played straight or combined with his other major loves, jazz and classical music. "Concert Creations for Guitar" is Alemeida's first album from 1950. It is a beguiling set of intimate unaccompanied pre-bossa guitar pieces that Almeida performed alone, unamplified onstage in those days which compliments "Brazilliance" perfectly.
Recorded in Los Angeles, California from April 15-22, 1953. Originally released on Pacific Jazz (1204).
Personnel: Bud Shank (alto saxophone, flute); Laurindo Almeida (guitar); Gary Peacock (bass); Chuck Flores (drums).
The Wire (p.69) - "Almeida's samba rhythm melds organically into jazz swing as Shank's alto enters." Brazilliance, Vol. 1 Music Laurindo Almeida Brazilliance, Vol. 1 Songs | 1. | Atabaque | |

Brazilliance, Vol. 1 music CDs
$12.89 Henry Threadgill has, in the framework of abstract music, been a stalwart, spontaneous composer whose personal sound is near impossible to identify, or certainly codify. A listener who enjoys very challenged music would have difficulty in discerning what is made up or written out. The elusive nature of Threadgill's kind of progressive jazz has to ...

| | Jazz At The Philharmonic In Tokyo: Live At The Nichigeki Theatre 1953 CDs (1953)
Brazilliance, Vol. 1 music CDs
$16.35 This two-CD set (originally out as three LPs) features the contents of a single Jazz at the Philharmonic concert held in Tokyo. There are mini-sets by the Oscar Peterson Trio, with guitarist Herb Ellis and bassist Ray Brown (which is highlighted by "Tenderly" and "Swingin' Till the Girls Come Home"), and Gene Krupa (in a trio with altoist Benny Carter and Peterson), along with ten numbers that feature Ella Fitgerald (who scats wildly on "Lady Be Good," "How High the Moon," and the closing "Perdido"). But the real reason to get this set is for the Jazz at the Philharmonic All-Stars (trumpeters Roy Eldridge and Charlie Shavers; trombonist Bill Harris; altoists Willie Smith and Benny Carter; tenors Ben Webster and Flip Phillips; the Oscar Peterson Trio; and drummer J.C. Heard) who, in addition to a seven-song ballad medley and a drum feature, stretch out on "Tokyo Blues" and "Cotton Tail." The latter has a witty and explosive trumpet battle by Shavers and Eldridge; Shavers comes out on top. This reissue is highly recommended as a fine example of the excitement of Jazz at the Philharmonic in the mid-'50s. ~ Scott Yanow
Vocalist, composer, guitarist and bass player Dorian Mingus has been recording and performing his original compositions for many years. His third CD, "Detriment of a fantasy" has just been released. Raised in the Bay Area, and son of renowned jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus, Dorian began playing the guitar at the age of ten. He had a facility for reading music, but found he preferred creating his own songs and picking out tunes popular in the sixties, especially those of the Beatles. Early influences in his career were Jimi Hendrix, ...
| | Bob Wilber Perfect Match: A Tribute To Hodges & Wild Bill Davis CD (1998)
Brazilliance, Vol. 1 songs
$9.69 In the 1960s altoist Johnny Hodges and organist Wild Bill Davis recorded eight albums together, several of which included trombonist Lawrence Brown. This 1997 set sounds very similar to that band and would probably confuse listeners in a blindfold test. Bob Wilber, normally a soprano saxophonist and clarinetist, always did sound a bit like Hodges on alto, but the biggest surprise is Dick Hyman. ...
| | Victor Feldman Latinsville CD (1959)
Brazilliance, Vol. 1 album
$12.35 Vibraphonist Victor Feldman's 1959 recording Latinsville found the British expatriate exploring various Latin rhythms in a decidedly West Coast style. Featuring an all-star group that included such cool school luminaries as trumpeter Conte Candoli and Frank Rosolino, Feldman also brought in Latin music pros including percussionists Willie Bobo and Mongo Santamaria, bassist Tony Reyes, and others. Selecting such popular songs of the day as "South of the Border," "Poinciana" and "Lady of Spain" -- most of which never originally specified a Latin-style treatment -- Feldman made explicit each songs implied Latin idiom. Although artists such as vibist Cal Tjader and Dizzy Gillespie had been producing Afro-Cuban and Brazilian inflected jazz for a few years, the cross-pollination didn't really catch on until the '60s. Consequently, Latinsville, while in no way as influential as say, Getz/Gilberto, is nonetheless a forgotten gem. ~ Matt Collar
