Thumbelina's One Night Stand music CDs A true indie-rock band if ever there was one, Beat Happening married earnest, bubble-gum pop with an edgy, rootsy, pre-grunge simplicity (the band are natives of Olympia, Washington; and founding member Calvin Johnson helped start the original Sub Pop, a fanzine that later morphed into the famed label). Anti-corporate and naive in sound, look, and ethos, the band (Calvin, Heather, and Bret, who went by first names only) reaches its apotheosis on its fifth album, 1992's YOU TURN ME ON. Here, as always, the ultra-spare three-piece features only drums and guitar, with two vocalists who resemble, respectively, a '60s girl-group wallflower (Heather) and a baritone-brandishing game-show host who just woke up from a nap (Calvin). Despite the quirky minimalism, Beat Happening is remarkably powerful. Calvin's rocking surf-garage tunes--the title track and the tongue-in-cheek "Pinebox Derby" among them--chug along; but his "Tiger Trap," an emotive rock anthem, is the real standout here. Meanwhile, Heather's dreamy pop gems "Sleepy Head" and the delicate "Godsend" offer lovely contrast.
