Freedom album
$15.15 When one hears about a producer/DJ releasing a new mix CD, what one most often does not expect to hear is a collection of quiet singer-songwriter fare. And yet that's pretty much what's on offer on Trentemoller's HARBOUR BOAT TRIPS 01: COPENHAGEN. In amongst wispy offerings like Emiliana Torrini's "Lifesaver" and Grouper's weirdly ethereal but strikingly pretty "Heavy Water/I'd Rather Be Sleeping," are startling entries like a Raveonettes version of Joy Division's post-punk classic "She's Lost Control" and a large-ensemble version of Soft Cell's "Tainted Love," both of which are excellent. For the most part a languid, semi-acoustic ambience prevails through most of the program, creating a quirkily enjoyable mood.

| | Chill: Brazil 3 CDs (2008)
Freedom CD music
$14.79 A quick survey of the track listing of Warner Music Latina's Chill: Brazil, Vol. 3 collection is sure to make you salivate if you're into Brazilian music, especially any kind with a bossa nova slant. Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Celso Fonseca, Maria Rita, Jorge Ben, Gal Costa, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Elis Regina, Chico Buarque, Baden Powell, Bebel Gilberto, Titas -- these are just some of the most-recognizable names, not to mention many of the others present here who may not be overly familiar to anyone not knee deep into the many wonders of Brazilian music. And too, these artists are represented by standout recordings, not cheaply licensed latter-day efforts or anything else even mildly disappointing. So does Chill: Brazil, Vol. 3 play like a greatest-hits of Brazil collection? Well, kinda -- the music here is certainly top-shelf Brazilian music of the late 20th century, spanning a few decades and even dipping into the 21st century, but it's not presented like a greatest-hits album: It's actually a mix album. The tracks are subtly blended into one another, resulting in a seamless listen that transitions well, even as it time-travels. Many thanks go to Gilberto Gil for compiling this excellent collection of music. He's not credited with the "soft mix," but his expertise and taste is much in evidence. As for that "soft mix," it can be mildly annoying if you're the type of person who likes to edit your CDs. You know, like if you were to pick and choose some tracks from this collection for one of your oh-so-awesome iTunes play lists. If you're one of those bedroom DJs who prefers iPods and CD-Rs to commercial product like this, you're going to have slightly screwy intro and outros for the songs you lift from this mix. That heads-up aside, there's really nothing to complain about here (well, maybe the "chill" billing is a misnomer, as this is far from a run-of-the-mill "chillout" Muzak mix). Warner Music Latina has put together a great series of collections here -- from the double-disc packaging to the superstar compiler to the soft mixing to the black-check licensing -- and anyone even slightly into Brazilian music is sure to eat these collections up. So here you are, bon appétit! ~ Jason Birchmeier
| | U F O Obsession CD (1978) (Import) Japan; Remastered; Mini LP Sleeve
Freedom music CDs
$30.75 These anthemic Brit rockers weren't able to scale the heights as, say, Led Zep or Aerosmith, but they managed to make a whole bunch of beautiful noise nonetheless. This reissue of their 1978 album features "Only You Can Rock Me," "Born To Lose," and "Cherry."
UFO had finally fulfilled their potential with 1977's exceptional hard rock tour de force, LIGHTS OUT, and released another prime slice of heavy metal just one year later, OBSESSION. While most '70s Euro-metal bands such as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, etc., dealt largely with doom and gloom, UFO proved to have more in common with such US melodic hard rockers as Van Halen.
OBSESSION proved to be UFO's most successful studio album ever, on the strength of such hard rocking highlights as "Only You Can Rock Me" and "Ain't No Baby." Even though guitarist Michael Schenker again pushes the songs to the limit here with his superb playing, OBSESSION would prove to be his final studio album with UFO. After just one more release, the classic live set STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT, Schenker left to briefly rejoin the Scorpions, before launching the Michael Schenker Group.
Japanese pressing of their 1978 album. The CD has been remastered and comes packaged in a miniature LP sleeve. EMI. 2005.
CD comes in Jpn LP Sleeve.
Recorded at C.P. McGregor's and Western Avenue, Los Angeles, California and The West 3rd Carrier Station, Beverly Hills, California.
UFO: Phil Mogg (vocals); Michael Schenker (guitar); Paul Raymond (keyboards, guitar); Pete Way (bass); Andy Parker (drums).
