Ray Anthony Plays Billy May album
$10.65 Escapist treats abound from this mysterious, tongue-in-cheek collective from the Southern United States. Man or Astro-man? have an ear for yesterday's sounds of tomorrow, as they decorate their mostly instrumental tracks with obscure sound bytes from out-of-date sci-fi movies and forgotten TV shows. Silly, dangerous, occasionally sloppy, but never boring, their album Is It Man...or Astro-Man? is the answer for everyone running low on laser gun/go-go/surf/spy/cowboy/drag racing/'60s/bullfighter/Mars-invasion/motorbike music. Songs like "Taxidermist Surf," "Invasion of the Dragonmen," and "Journey to the Stars" (originally by the Ventures) gallop along with the energy of a dozen wild stallions headed for Neptune. "Nitrous Burn Out" is a fantastic bit of racetrack romp, liberally mixed with roaring ...

| | Spike Jones Omnibust/60 Years Of "Music America Hates Best" CD (2002)
Ray Anthony Plays Billy May music CDs
$15.29 Omnibust/60 Years of Music America Hates Best pairs two of Spike Jones' Liberty albums from 1960 on one disc. Omnibust is a largely spoken word parody of television programming that takes a swipe at Lawrence Welk, children's programming, commercials, soap operas, and the then-popularity of detective show theme music. "I Search for Golden Adventure (In My Seven Leaky Boots)" manages to parody adventure shows and Martin Denny's "The Quiet Village" at the same time, while "The Wonderful World of Hari Kari" revisits the ...

| | Stan Kenton Contemporary Concepts CD (1955) Bonus Tracks
Ray Anthony Plays Billy May album
$9.19 This is one of the less important Stan Kenton LP reissues on Creative World. Six veteran standards (all arranged by Bill Holman) and Gerry Mulligan's "Limelight" (with a chart from its composer) were adapted for the 1955 Stan Kenton Orchestra; all but "Limelight" are currently available on CD. The music swings well (with drummer Mel Lewis pushing the rhythm section) and such talented soloists as altoists Charlie Mariano and Lennie Niehaus, tenor-saxophonist Bill Perkins, trombonist Carl Fontana and trumpeters Sam Noto and Stu Williamson are well-featured. Nothing all that innovative occurs but this accessible set should be of interest to fans of bop (in addition to Kenton's loyal audience) who do not already have the music on CD. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Primitive & Passionate/Les Baxter Balladeers CD (2004)
Ray Anthony Plays Billy May CD music
$11.59 Another in Collectables' series of Les Baxter two-fers, The Primitive and the Passionate/Les Baxter's Balladeers collects a pair of the composer/conductor's early-'60s albums. With song titles like "Peking Tiger" and "A Night with Cleopatra," 1962's The Primitive and the Passionate is a pretty typical -- and entertaining -- mix of Baxter's instrumental exotica and standards. And, while the relatively straightforward renditions of "Laura," "Little Girl Blue," and "A Taste of Honey" might be a little too tasteful ...

Ray Anthony Plays Billy May songs
$10.55 Tracks 1-8 recorded on November 30, 1971 at Condorcet Studio, Tolouse, France. Tracks 9-13 recorded on November 26, 1974 at Barclay Studio, Paris, France. Includes liner notes by Dick Shurman.
All songs written by Jimmy Dawkins except "Ode To Billy Joe" (Bobbie Gentry).
Jimmy Dawkins' infrequent albums are always a joy, and that was the case when he made his first sojourn to Europe in 1970 and recorded LPs for Black & Blue, Vogue, and Excello in France ...
