I Us We You album
$11.18 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual ...

I Us We You CD music
$19.34 It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, ...
| | Leona Lewis Echo CD (2009)
I Us We You music CDs
$11.18 The goal of Leona Lewis' 2007 debut, Spirit, was to prove that an X Factor winner could be a phenomenon not just in the U.K., but in the rest of the world. The goal of her second album, 2009's Echo, is to prove that success was no fluke, to build upon "Bleeding Love" and turn Lewis into an actual diva. Certainly, Echo in any of its incarnations -- its song listings are tailored for individual markets, with the U.K. getting a cover of Oasis' "Stop Crying Your Heart Out," while the U.S. gets a second song co-written by Justin Timberlake -- uses the chilly, synthesized "Bleeding Love" as its foundation, creating a sheet of sound equal parts Euro-pop and modern American R&B. As opposed to the often-stuffy Spirit, this is proudly modern, and if the sounds emanating from the two sides of the Atlantic might seem to ...

| | England Dan Dr. Heckle & Mr. Jive CD (1978) Reissued
I Us We You songs
$9.55 The sincerity of their days on A&M Records has turned to total formula by the time Dr. Heckyl & Mr. Jive came around -- and Robert Louis Stevenson expert, author Ray McNally, makes it clear in his book on Mr. Hyde that the true pronunciation is Dr. Jeekill (as in, "I Kill and Hide"). It is quite a paradox that this justified attack on the Hollywood system uses the mispronunciation of this famous title which Hollywood forced upon the world. Were these singers that clever to have slipped this in as a sly parody? Probably not -- because the sentiment in the poem here is right on, but the execution of the title track, is as musically contrived as it sounds. This album shows the worst, and the best, of this productive duo. "Running After You" falls into the former category, but their hit rendition of the Todd Rundgren tune "Love Is the Answer" is up there with "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight" as among their very best work. Their finding this little gem on Utopia's 1977 release Oops! Wrong Planet is commendable. In the same vein as "Love Is the Answer," "What's Forever For" is also extraordinary, featuring excellent vocal work, skilled musicianship, and top notch production by former bassist for this duo Kyle Lehning. He leaves the bass chores to Elton John's sideman Dee ...

| | Lid Emba Reason Isn't Radar CD (2006)
I Us We You music CDs
$10.55 The debut album of Lid Emba falls in the new age ambient experimental electronic music category, where rhythms and structures lose their visibility and the motif remains more on the constant investigation of tonal atmospheres as the compositions progress. On one hand, the grungy raw sound of this eight-track offering points to the use of traditional, non-sophisticated equipment; yet the glitch noises indicate complicated computer-generated music. An interesting fact to note about this album is that, though Sean Moore's infatuation with drums is exemplified throughout (he is a member of a rock band), the collection overrides any rock-influenced undertones with its excellent endeavors fusing outright noise with ambient psychedelic sounds. Casual listeners might draw comparisons with the minimalist approaches of Robert Hood, yet more or less indiscernible structures limit this comparison to songs like "Memory Merchant" and "Pardon Me, Claude." For that matter, songs like "Rib Cage," "Butterwings," and "Resin Rains" might sound close to the noisy, ambient-paced approaches of greats like DJ Spooky and John Cage, yet the whole inconspicuous style adheres Lid Emba to unregulated divergence. Moreover, it's more the intelligent use of technology and equipment rather than sampling that makes this album uniquely styled, in contrast to most of Lid Emba's contemporaries. The closing track, "Ghost of Sand Train," might well be singled out as a representative single here. Though it sounds noisy and chaotic upon the first few spins, the album ...
