Anthony Wilson is a superior straight-ahead guitarist who is also a very talented arranger-composer. His nonet plays in the Los Angeles area, performing his arrangements and mostly Wilson's compositions. Filled with some of Southern California's best and most versatile musicians, the Anthony Wilson Nonet interprets his colorful and atmospheric charts flawlessly. On Power of Nine there is a four-part suite ("Quadra") which has guest mandolinist Eva Scow interacting with Wilson's guitar on two of the sections. That moody work, dedicated to Brazil, has its intriguing moments but some of the other individual pieces are actually the high points. An infectious version of Duke Pearson's "Make It Good," Diana Krall's guest vocal on a nostalgic waltz by Jimmy Rowles ("Looking Back"), a stirring tenor solo by Matt Otto on "Amalgamation," the jubilant "Melatonin Dream" and the gradual building up of passion on "Hymn" are memorable. In addition there is a "hidden" twelfth selection, a Monk-ish "Bird in a Basket" which has an intense baritone solo by Adam Schroeder. Other solo stars along the way include trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos, and pianist Donald Vega. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow

For starters, a clarification: this CD contains only five cuts in which Parker and Gillespie front a quintet. The remaining ten tunes are performed by Gillespie with his big band and do not include Parker. The reason for this, as explained by Ira Gitler in his excellent liner notes, lies in the origin of the concert itself-originally meant only to feature Gillespie's band and guest Ella Fitzgerald. Parker was then invited to join Gillespie's rhythm section for a reunion of sorts in which the twin fathers of bop would hold forth on a handful of their seminal tunes. This they did, and both the music and the fidelity are all that you could want.
Dizzy's big band was packed with great players, and the repertoire reflected many aspects of the trumpeter's personality. SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK! ROCKS finds Pavement, Better Than Ezra, Deluxx Folk Implosion (featuring Sebadoh's Lou Barlow) and Moby, among others, covering songs from "Schoolhouse Rock," the Emmy Award-winning educational cartoon series that aired Saturday mornings on ABC from 1973 to 1995 (it was brought back in the '90s for the enlightenment of a new generation of cartoon watchers).
Barlow sings "I'm Just A Bill," interpreting the spoken voice of a congressional bill as an understandably whiny thing. The song paints a convincing, matter-of-fact picture of the complications faced by potential laws: "I'm just a bill, yes I'm only a bill/And if they vote for me on Capitol Hill/Well, then I'm off to the White House where I'll wait in a line." Another standout is Blind Melon's cover of "Three Is A Magic Number." A laid-back, James Brownish psychedelic groove, combined with Shannon Hoon's squeaky-clean vocals, is sure to get the kids in the basement dancing.
Sing the phrase "I'm just a Bill, yes I'm only a Bill" to any American between the ages of 25 and 40 and they'll answer "and I'm sittin' here on Capitol Hill" without thinking twice. "I'm Just a Bill" was only one of dozens of School House Rock! animated videos that ran on ABC Saturday morning TV throughout the '70s. Following the lead of Sesame Street, the shorts, sandwiched between cartoon and commercials, combined catchy tunes, cartoons, and educational messages. The shows have enjoyed a resurgence in the '90s with their re-airing on ABC (along with some new sequences) as well as the decade's '70s nostalgia.
More than the messages or the videos, School House Rock! is remembered for its songs. These super-hummable full-length jingles have a permanent place in collective memories of the '70s, so it seems appropriate that the program's owners have brought together a collection of young bands to cover the songs, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Children's Defense Fund.
The 15 songs on this initial offering only represent a portion of the total set, but it is a collection of the most memorable ditties. Beyond the undeniably delicious nostalgia trip, the compilation shows the surprising songcraft of the original tunes. The fabulous "Interplanet Janet" performed by Man or Astroman? could easily be mistaken for a proto-punk space saga. This solo CD by percussionist Jerome Cooper cannot be considered unnecessary -- his few LPs as a leader have not been reissued on CD (at least when this one came out). In Concert: From There to Hear was put together from a handful of performances at Roulette and the Knitting Factory (both in New York) between 1995 and 1998. Cooper performs on a regular jazz drum kit, African instruments (talking drums, balafon), electronic drums, keyboards, samplers, and the chiramia, a Mexican double-reed instrument. His music is hard to pigeonhole, to say the least.
