Dave Burrell has been heard in a variety of jazz settings over the years; the veteran pianist has embraced free jazz at its most extreme, but he is certainly accomplished as an inside/outside player. Recorded live at the University of Pennsylvania's Houston Hall in Philadelphia in 2005, Consequences finds Burrell forming a cohesive duo with percussionist Billy Martin (of Medeski, Martin & Wood fame). There are no other musicians on board -- Consequences is strictly Burrell's acoustic piano and Martin's captivating percussion -- and the two musicians enjoy a consistently strong rapport during a set that passionately celebrates the pleasures of totally outside free jazz. Consequences is not mildly avant-garde; it is very avant-garde, and the influence of Cecil Taylor's blistering pianism is impossible to miss. Taylor, of course, is hardly the only pianist who has influenced Burrell along the way -- Burrell also appreciates everyone from Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell to Jelly Roll Morton -- but on this CD, Taylor is Burrell's most obvious influence (which is not to say that Burrell allows his own personality to become obscured; he is his own man and has been for a long time). And thanks to Taylor's inspiration, Consequences is as dissonant and abstract as it is passionate. It is also uncompromising. Consequences is not recommend to listeners who haven't developed a taste for radical players like Taylor and Marilyn Crispell, but those who do appreciate the more extreme side of avant-garde jazz will find a lot to enjoy about Burrell's inspired outside duets with Martin. ~ Alex Henderson

"He's not just a percussionist," seems to be the message Mino Cinelu is trying to convey on his eclectic first solo album after a lengthy career as an accompanist to jazz and pop stars. In that attempt, he steps out from his battery to sing, play guitars and flute, and to compose, arrange, program, and produce the music. The results range from the folk-rock feel of "Confians" to the South African flavor of "Chouval Boa" and the Latin sound of "See Yea - Salee Yea" (which will remind pop fans of Lionel Richie's "All Night Long (All Night)"). But it takes nothing away from Cinelu's varied abilities to say that he is really a percussionist writ large on this album, one who has a fondness for nature (wind in "Moun Madinina," crickets in "Shibumi Dunes (Silk Road)") and unusual drum sounds (the latter a definitional characteristic of percussionists). While there's little startling about this 1999 collection of predominantly acoustic covers from the Chicago harpist/vocalist, the band and Simmons consistently find a low-key groove that's intoxicating. Simmons sings with easy authority, a sort of less lascivious Sonny Boy Williamson, and his band supports him with an effervescent, entirely unpretentious upbeat blues that leaps out of the speakers. Even warhorses like Little Willie John's "Fever" (which features an absolutely mind-melting piano solo from someone named Tyler Yarema) and Little Milton's "All Around the World," both of which have been covered to death, find unexpectedly fresh interpretations here. With leisurely, moving vocals that deliver emotionally without unnecessary effort, Simmons dances with the melodies, and his inspired performance makes this a successful album. The primarily acoustic format keeps the sound airy and uncluttered, as Simmons shifts from blues to gospel to R&B with deceptive ease. Organist Rhoda Scott has been living in France for the last few decades, and this set of standards was recorded there in 2002. Scott has always favored unusual groups, either a trio with drums and sax or a duo with a drummer, and here she is paired with veteran French percussionist Lucien Dobat. The set begins with lighter readings of "Mack the Knife" and "New York, New York" before digging deep into Johnny Griffin's "Sweet Sucker."
