Wind And Water music CDs
$13.09 After the expansive darkness of La Forêt, Xiu Xiu return with The Air Force, a set of songs that manages to be just as challenging as La Forêt, but sparer and somehow more eclectic-sounding at the same time. This time around, Jamie Stewart and company's explorations of vulnerability and ugliness-beauty are even more vivid; as usual, Stewart's breathtakingly concise, poetic lyrics are front and center. He captures longing and self-loathing on "Buzz Saw," singing "Your acne is like pearl/I swear mine is like brimstone." On the closing track, "Wig Master," he whispers, "Loneliness isn't being alone/It's when someone loves you/And you don't have it in you to love them back," a statement as devastating as it is true. Even for a Xiu Xiu album, The Air Force has a remarkable mix of contrasting sounds ...

| | Ryan Teague Coins And Crosses CD (2006) (Import) United Kingdom
Wind And Water album
$15.15 Ryan Teague's follow-up to his Type debut, the 2005 Six Preludes EP, is ambitious, to say the least. Appearing on almost every track is the Cambridge Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Tim Redmond. Ambitious indeed for an electronic artist, yet understated, as Teague is anything but pompous. Throughout Coins and Crosses, he attempts to fuse melodic orchestral compositions and textural electronics, to various degrees and with varying results. Teague's music is closer to Mahler's than Beethoven's: slow chords, melancholy moods, movements of turmoil repressed by an overbearing languor. This is all particularly obvious in "Fantasia for Strings," in which there are no electronics at all. Surprisingly, the piece never feels out of place on the album, which means that either Teague succeeds in his fusion of orchestra and ...

| | Yazbek Damascus CD (2001)
Wind And Water album
$14.49 Clearly David Yazbek is a showman, a theater man. His claim to fame is writing the music and lyrics for the Broadway musical The Full Monty. Prior, he wrote comedy for The David Letterman Show. He also has a couple of previous albums to his name. So it should come as no surprise that his album Damascus, well, plays like a musical soundtrack, sans actors' dialogue. The set's opener, "Montgomery, Alabama," fools listeners into thinking, Finally! Some good old-fashioned rock & roll. The song screams with a rollicking piano, horn solos, and a raspy lead vocal by Yazbek. Then "Strange Warm Day" chimes in; it's reminiscent of the Beach Boys' sublime Pet Sounds. On it, Yazbek's voice sounds like a hybrid of Elvis Costello and Brian Wilson. But these two songs are the first and last sign of non-theatrical fare audiences can expect on this disc, where he becomes an amalgam of John Pizzarelli meets Randy Newman. No doubt, Yazbek's voice is lovely. It is warm, mellow, and textured. And his lyrics are witty, satirical, off the beaten path, and detailed; they clearly demonstrate his writing prowess. (Case in point: "Sandy Koufax" -- "Is it hard to relate when you masturbate?/Is it difficult to feel the thunder?"). This isn't everyday songwriting, nor are these everyday song arrangements. Yazbek, honestly, is truly talented. But he shouldn't be doing straight music albums; they reek of show tunes, his obvious strength. And sometimes, audiences simply don't want to be sitting in an orchestra while listening to music in a car or from the couch. Yazbek would thrive ...
| | Angle We Can Breathe Under Alcohol CDs (2005) Enhanced CD
Wind And Water CD music
$10.19 An Angle tidies up the production and expands some of the arrangements for We Can Breathe Under Alcohol, their second effort for Drive-Thru. Bass, drums, strings, keys, Jessica Brown's pretty backing vocals -- there's even an occasional blast of brass. But at the center of it all is still Kris Anaya, the Sacramento band's songwriter, singer, and only static member. And he's still a weary, lovelorn, life-curious drunk, meaning that We Can Breathe doesn't feature enough of his talent or that of the ten-plus people in its credits. As they were on And Take It With a Grain of Salt, Bright Eyes and Elliott Smith are still immediate touchstones for Anaya's rambling, wordy indie pop (He has perfected a version of Conor Oberst's bruised warble). Give him a break -- after all, Anaya and his mates are just kids. They're in that naïve, vice-discovery stage about alcohol and cigarettes; they still see sitting in the barroom as an anxious novelty, and the music they make together reflects their immediate influences. But this doesn't forgive We Can Breathe's frustrating search for a solid melody. "Angry Drunk" has prescient lyrics -- "Every month I get checks in the mail/Yeah my mother says my drinking's becoming an issue " -- but its sighing arrangement for strings and brass plods ...
