Howard Alden - Live At The Smithsonian Jazz Cafe Movie Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Good, but not his best. Howard Alden is my favorite jazz guitar player. His style is more of a “classic jazz” style and he very proficient playing his 7-string guitar. His mind separates him from a lot of players, meaning the way he thinks about what he is playing. It is also very interesting in the songs he picks to play, certainly not today’s mainstream jazz, as he runs the gambit with easy to whistle titles such as, “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles” to “The Peacocks” with a bridge, no matter how many times you’ve heard it, you still can’t quite get it in your mind.
Having seen Howard play, and his recordings, this is not his best. (If I could only come up to his worst) At times he seems to be distracted and his execution is not up to what I’ve heard him do. I realize there are many things in the live setting that can be distracting. The sound is subject, for it distorts on my DVD player, but not on my PC. But there is that beautiful Benedetto 7-string guitar and watching Howard go thru exceptional physical finger gymnastics.
This is not a great DVD, but it is worth it, especially if you’re a Howard Alden fan.

Howards's musical depth and instrumental mastery are clearly apparent in this concert recorded at the Smithsonian Jazz Cafe in Washington D.C. on January 27th, 2006. Jon Burr on bass and Rob Garcia on drums join Howard on a rich selection of jazz favorites, with the beautiful voice of Terrie Richards Alden featured on "Gone With the Wind".
