Is it possible to pinpoint precisely when a popular style came into being? In one instance, a case could be made for smooth jazz's watershed moment: the debut of the Rippingtons. Formed in 1986, the Rippingtons are the brainchild of jazz guitarist and pianist Russ Freeman. They are to smooth jazz what Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers were to hard bop--namely, a musical college whose "alumnae" became stars of smooth jazz, a style unifying the most melodious aspects of fusion and post bop. The sole original member, Freeman gathered associates past and present for this disc to commemorate 20 years of successful music-making. The roll call of saxophonists alone is a Who's Who: Dave Koz, Brandon Fields, Kirk Whalum, and Eric Marienthal. Another leading light here is percussionist Steve Reid, who has also excelled in fusion and New Age contexts. While mostly instrumental, the album contains some tasty vocal spots, courtesy of Jeffrey Osborne (featured on the bonus track, the Spinners' "I'll Be Around") and jazz-pop diva Patti Austin. Fear not, fans--Freeman's supple, graceful guitar gets plenty of opportunities to shine.
Russ Freeman's band reunites the past and present Ripps for a special 20th anniversary CD release featuring all newly recorded material coupled with a fine DVD Rippingtons retrospective. Special guest performers include David Benoit, Dave Koz, Brian McKnight, Patti Austin, Jeffrey Osborne, Kirk Whalum, Gregg Karukas and more.
The Rippingtons: Russ Freeman (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, keyboards, bass guitar); Eric Marienthal (saxophone); Bill Heller (keyboards); Kim Stone (bass guitar); Dave Karasony (drums).
Additional personnel: Brian McKnight (vocals, various instruments); Jeffrey Osborne, Patti Austin (vocals).

20th Anniversary Celebration
$9.65 On Let It Ripp, the contemporary jazz masters known as the Rippingtons offer a mixed exhibition of musical paintings that freely roam their "live" aesthetic more than on any previous studio project. Recorded with no outside musicians except for the horns of Jerry Hey, Gary Grant, and Steven Hoffman, this excellent collection of 11 original songs written by Russ Freeman exemplifies the culmination of 17 years of being on the road. Special ...

20th Anniversary Celebration
$11.99 With its seething, laid-back funk beats and steamy lyrics full of obvious references to romantic trysts, it doesn't get any sexier than Brian Culbertson's IT'S ON TONIGHT. A number of prominent crossover jazz artist lend their talents here. For example, the downtempo title track features a sensual R&B vocal from singer Will Downing. Later, saxophonist Boney James' mellifluous lines become the focus of "The Way You ...
| | Peter White Playin Favorites CD (2006)
20th Anniversary Celebration
$8.99 For his tenth full-length album, Playin' Favourites, British smooth jazz giant Peter White decided to, as the title suggests, turn to some of his favorite tracks from the '60s, '70s, and '80s, giving each of them his own interpretation (he did a similar thing in 1994's Reflections). Working with longtime producer Paul Brown, as well as musicians Boney James, Rick Braun, and Dave Camp, among others, White successfully turns the 11 songs on Playin' Favourites into instant crossover jazz hits. Mainly this means adding horns and keyboards to the background while the guitarist lithely moves around from the melody into lush improvisationally based solos, rendering them much slicker and smoother than ...

| | Primal Scream Riot City Blues CD (2006) Germany
20th Anniversary Celebration
$9.39 On 2006's RIOT CITY BLUES, the revered U.K. alternative-rock band Primal Scream acts as if its late-1990s/early-2000s foray into electronica was nothing but a vivid dream, opting instead to pick up where '94's Stones-worshiping GIVE OUT BUT DON'T GIVE UP left off. With production handled by former Killing Joke bassist Youth and violinist Warren Ellis, a frequent Nick Cave foil, on board for several tracks, it's not surprising that the album often has a moody, angular sound (see the brooding "Little Death"), but frontman Bobby Gillespie's love of '70s glam and pub rock looms even larger, as on the searing Bowie-indebted "Suicide Sally & Johnny Guitar." Though it may perplex many fans, RIOT CITY BLUES is a fun tour through rock history, as seen ...
