Although the rough-and-ready Allan Dwan was at first underwhelmed about the idea of working with the 1930s child star, his collaboration with Temple turned out to be a pleasure for both. She stars as the title character in this adaptation of the children's classic. Set in the Swiss Alps during the 19th Century, the film opens with Heidi's Aunt Dete (Mady Christians) taking her to live with the girl's grandfather Adolph Kramer (Jean Hersholt), a rather ill-tempered hermit. Although the old man at first refuses to speak to the girl, he soon grows to love her. When Pastor Schultz (Thomas Beck) tries to persuade Kramer to bring the girl to church, he angrily refuses at first, but finally relents, and the two are accepted into the local community. Heidi's aunt suddenly returns, kidnapping the girl and taking her to the home of her wealthy employer Herr Sesemann (Sidney Blackmer), in Franfurt. He needs a child to spend time with Klara (Marcia Mae Jones), his invalid daughter, since he's often away on business. Heidi soon tries to escape, while her grandfather has already begun the 100-mile journey to Franfurt to find her. This amiable version of the classic features a top-drawer cast of character actors, and Dwan keeps thing moving along briskly.

Theatrical release date: Oct. 15, 1937. Shooting location: Lake Arrowhead, CA. Songwriter Jule Styne was Temple's vocal coach for the film. Dwan replaced Otto Brower as director after the latter had shot second-unit photography in Switzerland. Even 57 years after the film's release, it has turned up on the list of best-selling videos.

5 stars Beautiful story
Of all the Shirley Temple movies I think Heidi is the best. It is sad and poignant at times and funny at others. Altogether a great tear-jerker.

How To Marry A Millionaire DVD  (1953)

Heidi film
DVD $9.69  5 stars Top 500
Three screen goddesses--Betty Grable, Lauren Bacall, and Marilyn Monroe--star as golddigging models blessed with fabulous looks but limited brain power. The three blondes pool their resources and conspire to nab millionaire husbands, renting an expensive penthouse to lure in their likely prey. But with Rory Calhoun, Cameron Mitchell, David Wayne, Fred Clark, Alex D'Arcy, and William Powell playing the desired millionaires, the gals are pushed to the end of their wits as they try to decide whom to wed. Basing his work on two successful stage plays, famed producer and screenwriter Nunnally Johnson's dialogue is fabulous, and scenic views of Manhatten exploit the CinemaScope widescreen aesthetic. Director Jean Negulesco keeps the antics of the remarkable ensemble cast hyped to an outrageous level, which combines perfectly with both the script and the music to create exceptionally entertaining and classic camp. This film is a must-see for fans of Marilyn Monroe, who again asserts the brilliance of ...

"Just about the best Hollywood musical of all time," wrote Pauline Kael about SINGIN' IN THE RAIN. After years of honing his skills on the vaudeville stage, hoofer Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) has finally reached the top and become a swashbuckling star of the silent silver screen. Then the self-satisfied celebrity has his confidence shattered when ingenue Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) dismisses film actors as "shadows" without substance. After getting over the insult, he falls hard for her--much to the consternation of his costar, the sexy, selfish Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen), who wants Don all to herself. But Don has career troubles too. The wild popularity of THE JAZZ SINGER has studios scrambling to change from silent films to talkies, and Lina's shrill voice and Don's stiff acting left the preview audience roaring with laughter. There's only one ...

After love-struck teenager Susan is found in his apartment late at night, hapless painter Dick is given an unusual choice by the judge, who just so happens to be the girl's sister: date the smitten high-schooler until she gets over her infatuation... or go to prison. The situation becomes even more complicated when the judge's initial hostility towards the philandering artist soon turns to affection. Sidney Sheldon's bizarrely comic script earned him an Academy Award Nomination for Best Original Screenplay. This riotous throwback to the slapstick comedy of the vaudeville era is inventively written, directed, co-produced, and performed by Stanley Tucci (BIG NIGHT). He and Oliver Platt play acting partners just trying to catch a break. Down on their luck, they end up as accidental stowaways on an ocean liner. Trapped on the ship, they get involved in hilarious antic after hilarious antic, helped by a fabulous supporting cast including Tony Shalhoub, Lili Taylor, Isabella ...

Produced by animation legends William Hanna and Joseph Barbera (THE FLINTSTONES, SCOOBY-DOO) this musical feature brings E.B. White's beloved children's novel to life with a wealth of famous voices. Friendly pig Wilbur (Henry Gibson, NASHVILLE) makes a big splash on the county fair circuit after Charlotte (Debbie Reynolds), the gentle spider living over his sty, "spins" his praises in her web. White's perennial best-selling novel is translated to the screen in this beautifully animated award-winning ...

Originally a daytime soap opera, DARK SHADOWS garnered a huge cult following during its original 1966-1971 run and separated itself from its peers by dealing with increasingly bizarre and daring story lines. Covering episodes 251-290 in the series, this 4-disc set continues the saga of Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid), a 200-year-old vampire living on his family's manor estate in Collinsport, Maine. "Dark Shadows," the cult classic suspense series which first ran on ABC-TV from 1966-1971, is still haunting audiences with its spooky and romantic tales of the supernatural. From the guilt-ridden vampire Barnabas Collins to the vengeful witch Angelique, "Dark Shadows" is one of the most ...

Pineapple Express
Pineapple Express DVD  (2009) Unrated Single Disc Version

DVD $13.55  Top 500
While it might sound outlandish to speak of THE PINEAPPLE EXPRESS in the same sentence as CITIZEN KANE, in its own little neck of the cinematic woods the Judd Apatow/Seth Rogen comedy is perhaps just as groundbreaking. In fact, it's nearly impossible to think of another film that blends so seamlessly pitch-perfect stoner babble with high-octane action sequences. Dale Denton (Rogen), a process server with a weed fixation, witnesses a murder and turns to his dealer, Saul (James Franco), for support. The murderer is actually Saul's main drug supplier, and because of Saul's access to some extremely rare high-grade pot (called Pineapple Express) the two are quickly tracked down and put on the run. Like all Apatow/Rogen vehicles, the movie deals with the theme of men succumbing to adulthood and all the adjustments they are forced to make in the process. However, unlike KNOCKED UP and THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN, PINEAPPLE EXPRESS is just too wacky to offer any lessons. Still, there's more going on here than giggles and the munchies. Indie director David Gordon Green (SNOW ANGELS) brings a subtle auteur's touch to the proceedings, approaching the smoking scenes with his distinctively loose feel and giving the action sequences a wonderfully dated sheen that makes them look more like a fight from KNIGHT RIDER than the empty flash of 21st-century blow-‘em-ups. It is Franco, however, who truly steals this movie--he hasn't been this charming since his days on FREAKS AND GEEKS. There's only so many ways to play a stoner, but Franco puts his own endearing, lovable spin on the type, portraying Saul as a kind-hearted, well-intentioned yet hardcore dope smoker. Rogen and Apatow have proven themselves a nearly unstoppable juggernaut; here's hoping they bring ...
