After a three-year gap, one of his longest, Richman returned with this exceptional album. As with it's two predecessors, it was recorded for Neil Young's Vapor Records label. This time out he's added some reeds and woodwinds into the arrangements, played by Ralph Carney(known for his work with Tom Waits). This bit of flourish adds a nice counterpoint to Richman's vocals. The title track is a classic, as is "Couples Must Fight," another of his succinctly insightful inquiries into romantic relationships.
There's also a new arrangement of his old tune "Give Paris One More Chance," and the set is rounded out with four numbers sung in Spanish, ...

Fonda's third album, Catching Up to the Future, is also their best and most realized record yet. Although it was recorded in bits and pieces, often by one member at a time, the album amazingly sounds like the work of a quintet playing together in the studio. The sound is mostly sunny guitar pop with the occasional cloudy ballad thrown in for balance. Vocalist Emily Cook has a rich style reminiscent of classic indie pop singers like Amelia Fletcher of Heavenly and Miki Berenyi of Lush. In 2004, the folks at Sony repackaged the Clash's self-titled debut, London Calling, and Combat Rock in a three-disc longbox. In 2005, they decided to save on packaging and reissued the very same set in a slipcase as part of its Collection series. The merits of the records are well known to anyone who has spent any time listening to the band. In characteristic Sony fashion, they released these three together perhaps because they were the most commercially successful titles the band ever recorded. The Clash was first and was released in two versions between the U.S. and U.K., London Calling was the band's third album, while Combat Rock was their fifth. London Calling is a great place to start, though most hardcore fans still swear by their first. Combat Rock has its moment and netted a slew of hits, but it remains far inferior to London Calling. ~ Thom Jurek

A good buy if one is looking for these discs cheap, but those looking for the remastered versions will have to go get the individual re-releases.
