| | Greg Laswell Through Toledo CD Greg Laswell Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Through Toledo starts with the melancholic "Sing, Theresa Says" that has Greg Laswell delivering the song with the care of a lullaby, but his voice is an acquired taste like that of Lyle Lovett or Chris Isaak. It's lo-fi indie pop that consists of a short, punchy backbeat and high female harmonies hovering above. Meanwhile, "Amazed" is a lush, rich piece of pop that glides along effortlessly before breaking out and turning the amp up a notch or three. At times Laswell sounds too smart for his own good, with the winding "Worthwhile" coming across as too busy and less than worthwhile, while veering off in several different direction and tones at the same time. The same can be said for the dreary "I'm Hit." He redeems himself with the fine "Do What I Can" that brings to mind Coldplay. The longer the album goes on, the more Laswell shows his strengths as a very credible singer/songwriter, particularly on the piano-fuelled "High and Low" which is easily comparable to Keane's "Try Again" with its subtle but dramatic string accents. The ambling, relaxing, and soothing title track is a winner from the opening as the musician is in no hurry to get things to a higher pace or tempo, coming off as a jazzy jewel. He returns to this well once too often during "Come Undone" and things never quite come together again. ~ Jason MacNeil

| | Autumn Defense CD (2007)
Through Toledo CD music
$12.15 It's easy to tag the Autumn Defense as a band striving to re-create the sun-splashed sound of the classic California folk-rock and chamber pop albums of the '60s and early '70s, but while their musical influences are clear, the truth is that Patrick Sansone and John Stirratt have delivered an album every bit as satisfying and ...

| | Rough Guide To Scottish Music . CD (2003) Second Ed; Second Edition
Through Toledo music CDs
$11.35 In an all-new second edition focusing on the music of Scotland, Pete Heywood compiled a set of completely contemporary tracks, some by established artists like the Battlefield Band and many by a new generation who have embraced the music's older traditions after having been raised on 20th century pop/rock, blues, and jazz. One thing binds them together: No matter how contemporary some of these artists are, their musical sensibilities are rooted in the past. Instrumentation may be such that Emily Smith uses a piano alongside the fiddle on the centuries-old "Fair Helen of Kirconnel," with a new melody she composed. Elsewhere, the internationally renowned Capercaillie juxtapose the Uillean pipes with the bagpipes, synthesizers, electronic percussion, ...

| | Rachael Sage Blistering Sun CD (2006)
Through Toledo album
$9.89 Blistering Sun is, astonishingly, Rachael Sage's seventh studio offering. While she entered the scene with a fine array of skills, classical piano training, a head full of pop songwriters who influenced her, and a fantastic sense of time and phrase, this Port Chester, NY, native has finally come into her own with a set of songs that is bright, airy, economical, and full of fine hooks and textures. As on her past offerings, she has surrounded herself with a crack unit of studio musicians, including (to mention just a few) Julia Kent and Julie Wolf on cello and organ, respectively; Todd Sickafoose on bass; alternately Jack Petruzelli or Ben Butler on guitar; and trumpeter Russ Johnson. Sage handles the keyboard chores for herself and is a fine vocalist. But it is her keen ironic sense of humor and quirky sense of the profound being visible in any moment that make her special as a songwriter. This time out, one can hear the influence of Magazine-era Rickie Lee Jones in her work, but that's fine. Sage's phrasing is her own, and so is her writing. Slippery little pop flourishes underscore her restrained ...

| | Do Make Say Think You, You're A History In Rust CD (2007) Digipak
Through Toledo music CDs
$13.99 The fifth full-length from Do Make Say Think begins with a brief, minor-key modal piano and jazzy snare and cymbals intro that sounds an awful lot like an homage to Talk Talk's atmospheric masterpiece, Laughing Stock. You, You're a History in the Rust quickly veers from that intro into more familiar DMST terrain, but Mark Hollis and company's seminal record is an apropos touchstone for this Toronto collective's songs, which are built with similar emphasis on mood, texture, and dramatic ebb and flow. Like its excellent predecessor, Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn, Rust was recorded in DMST's favored remote haunts, and the old barns and cottages provide sympathetic ambience for the band's increasingly organic sound. Many of the themes seem plucked -- quite literally on the John Fahey-like "A Tender History in Rust" -- from the air, furtive patterns that appear like flickering shadows before they're given weight by the band's elegant horns, electric guitars, and two-drummer attack.
There's a suite-like nature to most of the songs, for which the opening track offers a blueprint of sorts. ...

| | Mannish Boys Lowdown Feelin' CD (2008)
Through Toledo album
$13.85 There are no fewer than 20 musicians contributing to the Mannish Boys' fourth release, which makes this album more the product of a collective or revue than an actual band. Despite the players changing on nearly every tune, this is nevertheless a strong and surprisingly cohesive set of Chicago styled blues originals and a few choice covers that click due to the talents of those involved. Producer and label owner Randy Chortkoff emphasizes that there is no digital recording involved and few overdubs, which makes for a rootsy, down-home blues stew that breathes. Veteran singer Finis Tasby only appears on three tracks but one of them, a cover of "If the Washing Don't Get You, the Rinsing Will," (best known from Albert King's version), featuring a stinging guitar solo from Kirk "Eli" Fletcher, is one of this disc's highlights. Old-school harpist/vocalist Little Sammy Davis joins to cover two of his own songs and is a classy addition to the revolving door lineup. Covers of Billy "The Kid" Emerson's "The Woodchuck," Texas Pete Mayes' title track, ...
