As the singer and co-founder of Bad Religion, Greg Graffin's name was well established before he ever released a solo effort. COLD AS THE CLAY might surprise those looking for a Bad Religion offshoot, however, as the album is an acoustic set of traditional American folk songs.
But despite the lack of screaming guitars, jackhammer tempos, and fist-raising choruses, there is something essentially "punk" about the spirit of this music. It is the music of estrangement: haunted and fierce, and it's filled with tales of tribulations and injustice. For punk rockers who never got into Harry Smith's ANTHOLOGY OF AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC, COLD AS THE CLAY could prove a great place to start.
Personnel: Greg Graffin (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica, piano); Greg Graffin; Stephen Carroll (guitar, slide guitar); Chris Berry & Panjea (guitar, banjo); Joe Wack, Stephen Carroll, Chris Berry (guitar); David Bragger (banjo, mandolin, fiddle); David Bragger (banjo); Greg Smith (electric bass); Jason Tait (drums); Jolie Holland (background vocals).
Photographer: Bryan Sheffield.
Spin (p.78) - "[He] trades rousing electric guitars for banjos and fiddles, but still throbs with a rock band's desperate energy." Alternative Press (p.216) - "Graffin spins old-time yarns into missives that ponder faith and redemption....Those with open ears will find themselves on a musical journey through American history with one of the best tour guides imaginable." Cold As The Clay album
$14.49 Lyrics translated from the Spanish by Guillermo Hernandaz, Yolanda Zepeda and Jaime Nicolopulos.
Following on from his father Santiago Jimenez' own successful run as a conjunto musician in San Antonio, Flaco Jimenez put together a conjunto of his own in the '50s, eventually becoming one of the most famous figures in Tex-Mex music (also known as Musica Nortena in Mexico). Based on the polkas and waltzes Mexican performers refashioned as rancheras, the Tex-Mex conjunto style features accordion, the 12-string bajo sexto guitar, bass, and drums. Flaco immediately staked his claim in the music with a distinctly imaginative and lively accordion style, finding the ideal backing from equally able Tejano musicians, including his father and his son David. For this excellent 1985 recording, Flaco teams up with noted bandleader and bajo player Toby Torres, bassist Henry "Big Red" Ojeda, and ...
| | Phil Alvin County Fair 2000 CD (1994)
Cold As The Clay CD music
$10.69 Brothers Phil and Dave Alvin were the heart of California roots-rockers the Blasters. After songwriter/guitarist Dave's departure for a solo career, Phil kept the group alive, but mostly on a local performance level, not as a recording unit. He released his first solo album in 1986, but it took him eight years to make another.
Like its predecessor, COUNTY FAIR finds Phil Alvin backed by a shifting cast of characters, exploring an eclectic batch of American roots styles, from blues to country to R&B and rockabilly. On several songs, he's backed by the '90s version of the Blasters, but Alvin goes further afield in collaborations with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and singer Mary Franklin. The solo efforts of each brother underline ...

Cold As The Clay music CDs
$11.59 A sense of justice and moral outrage is frequently part of punk's ethos, and Bad Religion has willfully flown this flag since the early 1980s. The title of the band's 2004 release, THE EMPIRE STRIKES FIRST, and the songs "Let Them Eat War" and "Sinister Rouge" indicate ...

Cold As The Clay album
$16.79 Sitting contentedly tucked into its mountain strongholds, Switzerland is the least likely place to find rebellion, its polite and law-abiding citizenry rarely raring to play rock & roll. Until Toad came along, that is. Formed in 1969, the band signed to EMI, with its debut album, B.U.F.O., overseen by Deep Purple's engineer, Martin Birch. And the British hard rock connection didn't end there, as Rainbow's Tommy Eyre would also sit in on keyboards. But is this compilation really unadulterated Toad? One suspects not, although the sparse credits do all in their power to pump further smoke on its water. The first six tracks were recorded in L.A., presumably predating singer/guitarist Vittorio Vergeat's arrival in Switzerland. "Tonight" and "Music" were laid down in London, with Eyre, bassist John Giblin, ...
| | Rogerio Duprat Banda Tropicalista Do Duprat CD (1968) (Import) United Kingdom
Cold As The Clay CD music
$15.59 Rogerio Duprat is most known as an arranger of Brazilian tropicalia music, but did also release music under his own name. This 1968 album will undoubtedly be of interest to collectors of '60s tropicalia and/or Brazilian psychedelia, if only because three of the 12 tracks are actually vocal numbers performed by Os Mutantes (though two of those are merely covers of the Cowsills' "The Rain, the Park, and Other Things" and the Beatles' "Lady Madonna"). Overall, it's a bit of an odd endeavor, falling somewhere between easy listening music and the kind of madcap experimentation more typical of his most celebrated clients. It's of a higher class than most easy listening albums, from Brazil or otherwise, however. For even if the predominantly instrumental material is sometimes cheesy (and sometimes covers not-so-classic American and British hits of the era such as "Summer Rain," "Honey," and "Cinderella Rockafella"), the arrangements are often infused with off-the-wall zany imagination and wit. Nowhere is this more apparent than the interpretation of "Judy in Disguise," ...
