If you think jazz is becoming an endangered art form chained to its past, that's nothing compared to the present condition of classical art song, which is almost extinct in concert halls, sustained mostly by star singers taking a break from opera. Nevertheless, pianist/composer Brad Mehldau treads where very, very few jazzmen have bothered to go before, composing a pair of classical song cycles for the esteemed, front-rank soprano Renée Fleming. No kidding. And he does it strictly in European classical terms; with no jazz, no hints of improvisation except in the title song, everything written out just as Schubert, Schumann, Mahler, Mehldau's idol Brahms, and other classical masters did before him. Rainer Maria Rilke's philosophical poems form the texts for Mehldau's "Songs from The Book of Hours: Love Poems to God," a grand seven-song cycle lasting over a half-hour. It speaks well for Mehldau's taste that these are far better texts than you often encounter in lieder, rooted in solitude, questioning man's relationship to God. His responses to the texts are thoughtful and varied in texture, ranging from the daringly simple, spare, stabbing progression of chords as an accompaniment to "Your First Word Was Light" to quasi-symphonic passages in others. The shorter, three-song "Songs from The Blue Estuaries," with texts by Louise Bogan, has a more ambiguous, turbulent texture, just teetering on this side of tonality. Oddly enough, the only piece that does not use a completely written-out score, "Love Sublime" (a reworking of Mehldau's instrumental "Paris"), is the song that pays closest homage to Mehldau's classical heroes, Wagner's modulations in particular, and Fleming is given the most latitude in phrasing here as well. Fleming's voice seems to have thickened as of this session, and her overall interpretive outlook remains cool, dignified and detached, while pouring forth seamless streams of polished, steady sound. "I Love You, Gentlest of Ways" (from "First Word") contains long passages of sustained, exposed vocal lines with no place to hide, which doesn't bother Fleming in the least. Throughout Love Sublime, Mehldau aims high -- he takes his task very seriously, and he has the tools for it -- although you don' quite hear a striking individual signature yet. ~ Richard S. Ginell

Bridget BallSinger/Songwriter \"This heart won\'t ever give upThis heart is made of steel.\"From \"Heart of Steel\" by Bridget Ball Strong words. Strong melodies. Strong performances. These are what have put Bridget Ball in front of audiences from the Smithsonian to concert halls and festivals, to radios in living rooms and dashboards across the country. Bridget was born and raised in central New York State, where the foothills of the Adirondacks melt into the rolling hills of New England and the Midwest begins to weave its love affair with the horizon. Her music was born and raised there too, in the tap rooms and taverns, hardware stores and kitchens of a people living and dying, laughing and loving in the crossroads of America. Bridget has eight recordings to her credit, each of which has enjoyed heavy airplay on radio stations nationwide that feature folk/acoustic music. Artists who have contributed to her recordings include such acoustic innovators as John Sebastian, Cindy Cashdollar (Asleep at the Wheel), Garth Hudson (The Band), Artie Traum, Jay Ungar, Tony Trischka, Steve Riley, and Bill Staines. Bridget also has been featured in several public television documentaries, including Songs from the Heart of the Adirondacks and Christmas in the Adirondacks. Her highly acclaimed Arts in Education program, \"Sisters and Friends,\" is the subject of a PBS documentary, A Song for Sisters. In her \"other\" life, Bridget works as a Financial Planning Specialist at a prestigious Wall Street investment firm where she helps her clients prepare for retirement, protect their savings and invest for the future. Bridget has been married since 1984 to singer/songwriter/storyteller Christopher Shaw. They currently live just south of the Adirondack Park in rural Rensselaer ...
Lagrimas Negras

Lágrimas Negras (Black Tears) is a collaborative effort between the octogenarian Cuban piano master Bebo Valdés and the reigning Spanish flamenco cantador, Dieguito El Cigala. Recorded for Fernando Trueba and Nat Chediak's Calle 54 label, the sessions took place in Madrid between September and December 2002. Maestro Valdés (born in 1918), the father of the jazz pianist Chucho, has a long history as an innovator in Cuban music. He recorded the first Afro-Cuban jazz session in 1952, and was a tutor to the great bandleader Beny Moré, writing early charts for him. Valdés is also a world-class arranger. Dieguito El Cigala was born in 1960, and has become the undisputed king of Spain's flamenco singers. This recording features nine tracks that meld together cooking son, jazz, Afro-Caribbean, and flamenco rhythms, in tunes by composers such as Lolita de la Colina, Virgilio and Homero Expósito, Ramón Perelló, the grand team of Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, Caetano Veloso (who makes a guest appearance), Maria Teresa Vera, Miguel Matamoros (who composed the title track), and others. Most are Cuban ballads. Guests such as Veloso, Paquito D'Rivera, Pancho Terry, Tata Güines, and El Niño Josele fall by on different tracks. And while the tunes are top-shelf and the guests make this a very special and historic occasion, it is the unusual dynamic and the integrity with which it is employed that makes this set so unique. Valdés' style is an elegant one; ...

Work O' The Weavers
Work O' The Weavers CD  (2004)

Tribute bands fill a void in the musical marketplace, allowing audiences the joy of hearing a semblance of the music of, say, the Beatles or the Doors in a concert setting long after the original groups stopped working. Usually, however, tribute bands do not take the next step of making their own albums, since listeners can still buy the original recordings. Work o' the Weavers, a tribute band "celebrating America's pioneering folk quartet," the Weavers, is a little different. For one thing, it's classic folk, not classic rock that the foursome is recalling. For another, they do not simply play the Weavers' songs in as close an approximation as possible to the original versions; they also stop to tell the story of a group that hit the top of the charts before succumbing to the 1950s blacklist and then making a remarkable comeback that seeded the folk revival of the '60s. As such, performances by Work o' the Weavers constitute both musical events and American history classes. It is only natural that Work o' the Weavers would provide their audiences with a souvenir CD reflecting the group's show, and that's what this is, a live recording containing not only their versions of Weavers songs, but also a fair amount of informative and sometimes humorous commentary on the historical context in which the music was created. The key to the band's success is singer/guitarist James Durst, who takes the part of first tenor Pete Seeger and often sounds uncannily like his model. Martha Sandefer, a powerful alto, is reminiscent of Ronnie Gilbert, although in her solo on "Buttermilk Hill" it's clear you'd never mistake her for Gilbert. Second tenor David Bernz and baritone Mark Murphy don't really sound much like Fred Hellerman and Lee Hays when singing solo, either, but in the harmony parts the group does capture the Weavers' sound. On this collection, the group receives the imprimatur of ...
