| | Nipples Weekend Toys CD Nipples Discography of CDs
THE NIPPLES take you on a ride through the eyes of America's disgruntled youth. Albeit these guys are not necessarily youth's anymore. The relentless attack of Nipples songs can be felt on such soon to be classics like "Numb", "Social Elite", "Exurbia", and the upcoming title track "Weekend Toys". Having grown up in a era of such debacle, the Nipples sing about topics that still relate to the growing Punk Rock community. Whether it be tackling such controversial issues as trying to live a life without underwear, or being attacked by that menacing gang of misfits the "Garbage Pail Kids", The Nipples put things into a light that any youngster or teen can understand and appreciate. Although popular mainstream America has choose digital to be it's way of consumption these days, the Nipples would have much preferred the opportunity to have given these upcoming 22 tracks a proper burial on any black 180 gram vinyl record or even the lovely hiss from an 8-track player. Just like their youth, time has seemed to have passed them by. Maybe that lends it reasons for the band to be such controversial subjects on playgrounds today.
Recording information: Tru One Studios (03/2006).

Weekend Toys album
$12.29 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't ...

| | Phill Niblock Touch Three CDs (2006)
Weekend Toys album
$20.25 The avant-garde composer Phill Niblock edits together recordings of acoustic instruments to produce continuous tones that are gradually altered by both naturally occurring and digitally produced microtones. The effect, when played at the high volume the composer recommends, can be monolithic, comforting, and awe-inspiring, sometimes simultaneously. TOUCH THREE contains nine works, from "Sethwork," performed on an acoustic guitar, to "Parker's Altered Mood," played on alto saxophone, which superimposes six decontextualized recordings of the classic Charlie Parker bebop jazz track "Parker's Mood" to create a unique, otherworldly collection of sounds.
This is Phill Niblock's third release on the Touch label. Phill Niblock is a New York-based minimalist composer and multi-media musician and director of Experimental Intermedia, a foundation born in the flames of 1968's barricade hopping. He has been a maverick presence on the fringes of the avant garde ever since. In the history books Niblock is the forgotten Minimalist. His influence has had more impact on younger composers such as Susan Stenger, Lois V. Vierk, David First, and Glenn Branca. Touch Three is minimalism in the classic sense of the word, if that makes sense. Niblock constructs big 24-track digitally-processed monolithic microtonal drones, and the result is sound without melody or rhythm. Movement is slow, geologically slow. Changes are almost imperceptible, and his music has a tendency of creeping up on you. The vocal pieces are like some of Ligeti's choral works, but a little more phased. He says: "What I am doing with my music is to produce something without rhythm or melody, by using many microtones that cause movements very, very slowly." These nine pieces were made from March 2003 to January 2005. They were all made (except "Sax Mix") by recording a single instrument with ...

$12.69 In the fall of 1990, Kevin Maves and Jeremy Dahl met in Ottawa and suddenly discovered that they shared a love for the same alternative acts, and a fast bond formed between the two. Kevin was a brilliant poet, vocalist and songwriter, and this complemented Jeremy’s instrumental talents nicely. For several years the two worked on home demos until stepping in to the studio in 1994 to record their eponymous debut, which languished in various stages of production as money and prior commitments interfered. In 1996, Jeremy moved to Vancouver with his prior commitment: the band The Age ...
