They're singing the songs...and living them. George Strait already had 25 chart-topping hits when he made his film debut in Pure Country (Side A). He plays Dusty, who ditches his superstar C&W career to rediscover his simple roots...and finds that the simple life can be complex when his manager (Lesley Ann Warren) retaliates. Next, in another savvy, song-filled slice of the performing life, Willie Nelson is On the Road Again for a film that's not autobiographical yet knows its highways and byways well. Dyan Cannon, Amy Irving and Slim Pickens join Nelson in a film that has the knack for providing the right song at the right time. Get on the bus. With Honeysuckle Rose (Side B), PURE COUNTRY: A country singer finds himself straddling two worlds: the down-home place where his musical roots are set, and the glittery fast lane where his success has taken him. In his first foray into the world of motion pictures, country star George Strait is affecting and heartwarming. PURE COUNTRY also features 10 songs by Straight recorded exclusively for the film.
HONEYSUCKLE ROSE: Country music star Willie Nelson plays Buck Bonham, a modern-day cowboy touring the country circuit. Pure Country/Honeysuckle Rose review
$7.59 Composed by Willie Nelson. Originally released as Columbia (36752). Includes liner notes by Jonny Whiteside. The soundtrack to Honeysuckle Rose is an anomaly in the genre. It is really a collection of songs by Willie Nelson and his Family band as well as a host of friends like Jody Payne, Johnny Gimble, Amy Irving, Hank Cochran, Jeannie Seely, Kenneth Threadgill, Dyan Cannon, and Emmylou Harris, all of it set in a concert-like atmosphere and performed live in front of an audience. Now it's true that Nelson is the hero of the movie, but the movie hardly matters when it comes to the soundtrack because it stands so well as a document on its own. Cochran's performances are as inspiring as anything he ever did in his life. Nelson's readings of his own tunes like "Bloody Mary Morning," "On the Road Again," ...

$10.49 With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera ...

Pure Country/Honeysuckle Rose film
$23.85 CULPEPPER CATTLE CO.: When an idealistic boy talks his way into becoming a cook's helper on a rugged cattle drive, he finds "cowboyin'" rapidly losing its appeal.
THE PROUD ONES: A Kansas marshal tries to maintain order as the new railroad turns his quiet town into a boomtown.
FORTY GUNS: Barbara Stanwyck (STELLA DALLAS) stars as Jessica Drummond, a rancher who runs her Arizona cattle ranch with an iron hand and a private army of 40 hired guns. The tough-as-nails matriarch has a troublesome brother whom she nonetheless dotes on, and when he shoots the sheriff she comes to his aid, unable to say no. This instigates an all-out war, which is further complicated by the fact that the new Marshall, Griff Bonnell (Barry Sullivan) falls hard for Jessica, and she returns his feelings. A gem from auteur Samuel Fuller (THE BIG RED ONE) that reads as a noir dressed as a western, the film ingeniously invokes genre tropes to investigate the intricacies of sex and love; its conclusions are less than optimistic, but the film retains a fascinating, almost surreal allure.
BROKEN LANCE: Edward Dmytryk directed this literate Western, a remake of THE HOUSE OF STRANGERS, which is itself loosely based on Shakespeare's KING LEAR. Tyrannical cattle baron Matt Devereaux (Spencer Tracy) has raised his older sons harshly, leaving them neglected and bitter, particularly Ben (Richard Widmark). Matt's youngest son, Joe (Robert Wagner), however, receives the most attention from Matt's wife, a Comanche Indian (Katy Jurado). Joe remains loyal, even taking the rap when the old man gets hauled up on ...
