| | Shawnna Block Music CD Shawnna Discography of CDs
For the 2006 follow-up to her debut, WORTH THA WEIGHT, Shawnna unveils another set of potent hip-hop tunes (aided once again by her mentor, Ludacris), most notably the sensual, R&B-tinged "Take It Slow." Although the fast-flowing Illinois native clearly feels a kinship with the Dirty South (as guests Lil' Wayne and 8 Ball will attest), she also stays true to her Midwestern roots on the lilting "Chicago," which features a guest appearance by her father, blues icon Buddy Guy. Arguably more consistent and confident than its predecessor, BLOCK MUSIC proves that Shawnna is ready to play in the big leagues of female MCs.
Personnel: Shawnna (vocals); Avant, Buddy Guy (vocals); 8Ball, I-20, Lil Wayne, Ludacris, MJG, Pharrell Williams, Too $hort, Smoke, Bobby Valentino (rap vocals).
XXL (Magazine) (p.131) - "Although she maintains her rough edge with lyrically tense cuts like 'Bang' and the title track, Shawnna also taps into her softer side." | | Body & Soul Vol. 3 CD (2000)
Block Music
$12.19 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Danny Krivit, Francois K & Joaquin "Joe" Claussell.
It's rare that club events warrant the need to compile a sampling of the tracks that are played during the night. It's even more rare when said compilation is full of great music. At Body & Soul, a weekly Sunday afternoon session of pure deepness hosted by François K., Danny Krivit, and Joe Claussell, they are already multiple volumes into such a series of releases. In this, their third installment, the three world-class DJ/producers touch all corners of the electronic spectrum. The CD's track listing even follows the ebb-and-flow emotional momentum that the event is famously known for. Starting off with "Closer I Get," a murky production put together by New York house gurus Yoruba, the trio navigates the journey through music much like a captain on a ship. The next stop on the tour leads to a few tracks from Detroit. The Aztec Mystic's "Knights of the Jaguar" and Aril Brikha's "Groove la Chord" aren't tracks one would expect to hear at such a house-dominated event; however, it just goes to show that Krivit, Kevorkian, and Claussell will play whatever inspires them and moves the crowd. The compilation comes to an inflective end with "Watch Them Come," a call-and-response house classic put together by Peven Everett and Roy Davis, Jr. under the guise of Men From the Nile, and "Casa Forte," a Latin-soaked atmospheric piece laid down by Snowboy. The Body & Soul compilations serve many purposes. They serve as a blazing endorsement ...
