A sampler for some of the modern urban soul artists handled by Mardi Gras Records out of New Orleans, Southern Soul Now! is somewhat of a disappointment, since little here rises above the ordinary, and given all the sampled beats and other hip-hop nation techniques applied to the backing tracks, some actual soulful singing would have been a nice addition to the mix. The label may be based in New Orleans, but this stuff sounds like it could have been recorded in Anywhere, U.S.A. A few tracks manage to have some impact, like the opening cut, "Get out of Town" by Snatch Nelson, Willie B.'s "Dr Jealous & Mrs. Hater," and Nathaniel Kimble's "U Don't Want to Be Loved," but most of what is here slips out of mind as soon as the track winds down, and sometimes even before that. ~ Steve Leggett Southern Soul Now! Southern Soul Now!
$9.95 Soul belter J.J. Jackson is best known for his 1967 smash, "But It's Alright," but he has some fine singles and a couple of excellent albums as well, and 1967's But It's Alright on the Calla label is one of them. Kicking off with the infectious title track, the record alternates between flat-out rockers like "I Dig Girls," "Come See Me (I'm Your Man)" (which was ...

Southern Soul Now!
$13.59 THE COMPLETE HALIFAX THREE contains: THE HALIFAX THREE (1963)/SAN FRANCISCO BAY BLUES (1963).
Leave it to the tape vault excavationists and rare recording scavengers at Collectors' Choice Music to compile what is undoubtedly the final word on the Canadian folk trio the Halifax Three. Containing over an hour of music, The Complete Halifax Three combines both their self-titled debut album and follow-up San Francisco Bay Blues, as well as the 45 rpm only track "All the Good Times." Although a few scant tunes have turned up on various-artists compilations -- most notably Before They Were the Mamas & the Papas...The Magic Circle -- this release is the first to thoroughly examine the band's output. The Halifax Three included the enormous talents of future Papa Dennis (aka Denny) Doherty(guitar/vocals), Pat La Croix (bass/vocals), and the spiritual center ...
