| | John Digweed Renaissance Presents Transitions CD John Digweed Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
British club DJ John Digweed's first release in a decade under the Renaissance imprint is a collection of tastefully assembled dance tracks that vary from the spare minimalism of Popnoname's "On the Run" to the aggressive techno of Lutzenkirchen's remix of Digweed's own "Warung Beach." Partial Arts' spacy "Cruising" sets the tone, while Catwash's "Plastic Rubberband" places its goofy electronic percussion against an insistent bass line, and Rocco's dream-like "Roots 4 Acid" sets the controls straight for the cerebral cortex.

Renaissance Presents Transitions album
$13.19 It differs little from his previous releases, but Paul Van Dyk's The Politics of Dancing, Vol. 2 is a satisfying argument that trance isn't dead and not even on life support. One bit of newness is the speed at which Van Dyk discards tracks on disc one's mix, a 17-song epic journey into uplifting, atmospheric dancefloor dreaminess. Theatrical stops and starts feature into every one of these blissful numbers, but Van Dyk keeps things moving at a pace such that the listener probably won't notice the gimmicky device is being overused. Otherwise, everything is tasteful with vocal numbers that don't get too precious and just enough Benny ...

| | Dave Seaman Renaissance: The Masters Series Vol. 7 CDs (2006)
Renaissance Presents Transitions songs
$16.69 Having achieved significant success with his first contribution to the Renaissance label's Masters series (Desire), U.K. house DJ Dave Seaman returns with another shot, Renaissance: The Masters Series, Vol. 7, a two-disc mix album that offers a generous program of modern house sounds. There won't be any surprises here for Seaman's fans, but he does demonstrate that there's still plenty of interest to be mined from his signature trippy and dubby brand of house music. He also shows that he's willing to go off the reservation when the spirit moves; in fact, the album's opening number (a Sasha remix of Charlie May's "Seal Clubbing") starts the album off in a crispy breaks mode before things settle into a more typical house-with-dub-effects style. The highlight of the first disc is Thievery Corporation's fun and pop-smart "Heart's a Lonely Hunter," which features vocals by ex-Talking Heads frontman David ...

| | Taka Koto Ensemble CD
Renaissance Presents Transitions album
$11.99 This ensemble of seven women koto players based in Seattle and headed by Elizabeth Falconer, specializes in performing contemporary music for the Japanese koto. Members include: Cara Izumi, Junko Tajima, Sachiko Honda, Mayuko Ohinata, Mie Naito, and Shiho Kurauchi. "Taka" (falcon) refers to the soaring reverberations of their combined energies on their 13-stringed instruments. The music is composed by Tadao Sawai and Elizabeth Falconer. I first heard the Taka Koto Ensemble at an open-air concert where their music and orchestrations captured the essence of spring breezes. I purchased the CD that night from one of the members of the ensemble and have enjoyed it regularly since then. The sounds created in the pieces are vibrant, sensual, fresh and soothing. The ensemble ...
