Country singer-songwriter John Brannen is the antithesis of slick Nashville superstars, as this rocking collection attests. It's full of the kind of down-to-earth songs that'll be familiar to John Cougar Mellencamp fans, though Brannen's production is far from big-budget and his voice is capable of far more range than the average country singer. "Just Restless" is typical of his blue-collar style, while "A Cut So Deep," with guest vocals from Lucinda Williams, shows his sensitive side, and the authentic-sounding "Heartbreak Ridge" lays bare his '50s rock & roll roots.

Twilight Tattoo album
$10.85 On singer/songwriter John Brannen's fourth album, he combines rootsy arrangements with a handful of solid songs to create a wise record that doesn't forget to rock. His sound and approach, as some critics have noted, shows the influence of Bruce Springsteen and John Cougar Mellencamp without being derivative. Call it rock from America's heartland. "A Pair of Dice" tells the tale of a lucky gambler whose luck runs out when the devil comes to him "disguised, painted lips and pleading eyes." While this might look like another song about another woman doing a man wrong, the lyric never spells everything out and Brannen delivers the piece with gusto. "Lookin' Good" rolls along with a nice rhythmic base, guitars and bass chugging along as the protagonist pines over his good-looking Ex. Brannen's joined by a talented band including guitarist Pete Carr, pianist Clayton Ivy, bassist Willie Weeks, and drummer Owen Hale, allowing for full-bodied arrangements. There's also liberal use of background singers, ...
| | Faith Hill Fireflies CD (2005)
Twilight Tattoo CD music
$15.65 Coming after the relative commercial disappointment of 2002's pop-oriented CRY--and, not at all coincidentally, Gretchen Wilson's rise as the new Everygirl of country--Faith Hill's FIREFLIES is a blatant attempt to ditch the singer's glamourpuss image and reassert her country roots, such things having become fashionable again. This isn't a problem, however: Shania Twain-like chart pop wasn't Hill's forte, and FIREFLIES brings her back where she belongs.
The first single, "Mississippi Girl," is Hill's best song in years. A Dixie Chicks-like piece of sweet country-pop with a few bluegrass trimmings, the tune was written by country hitmaker John Rich. Rich also penned some of the other standouts here, like the laid-back "Sunshine and Summertime" and "Like We Never Loved At All," a dramatic, '70s-style duet between Hill and her husband Tim McGraw. Three other songs are from the catalogue of alt-country singer/songwriter Lori McKenna, taking Hill into a folkish vein ...

| | Montgomery Gentry Some People Change CD (2006)
Twilight Tattoo album
$9.55 With one foot in rowdy southern rock of the Lynyrd Skynyrd variety and one in contemporary Nashville country, the country-rock duo Montgomery Gentry have always had a wider commercial reach than other similar sounding acts. SOME PEOPLE CHANGE continues the band's string of fine, hard-rocking country albums, with the excellent title track (and first single) a clear career highlight. The sweet ballad "Clouds" shows an uncharacteristicly gentle side, while "If You Wanna Keep An Angel" is an instant honky tonk classic.

Twilight Tattoo album
$14.45 Produced by Anton Sanko, Lucy Kaplansky's second album showcases her songwriting, with strong ballads such as "If You Could See" and "Still Life," a moving character sketch that has been the centerpiece of her live performances. Her unique voice, steely and supple, moves easily from irony to aching sincerity, a feat not often accomplished since the early recordings of Judy Collins. Other highlights are a rollicking bluegrass version of Nick Lowe's "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding?" and a duet with John Gorka on Gram Parsons' legendary "Return of the Grievous Angel." Reverse before the first track for a hidden version of the Beatles' "I've Just Seen a Face." ~ Claire Keaveney

| | Mendoza Line Fortune CD (2004)
Twilight Tattoo CD music
$13.89 The Mendoza Line has been steadily refining its brand of intimate, emotional indie rock over its last several albums. FORTUNE bears traces of both the band's rootsier influences and the ragged, rock-oriented sound of its 1997 debut. There are examples of Dylan-esque folk ("Fellow Travelers"), country ("Faithful Brothers [Scourge of the Land]"), classic rock ("An Architect's Eye"), and the confessional singer-songwriter tradition ("Let's Not Talk About It").
