Metal Church: Ronny Munroe (vocals); Kurdt Vanderhoof (guitar, keyboards); Jay Reynolds (guitar); Steve Unger (bass guitar, background vocals); Jeff Plate (drums). Throughout the career of Metal Church, guitarist Kurdt Vanderhoof has always been considered the leader of the band, and their 2006 release A Light in the Dark, proves it once and for all. Being the only original member left in attendance by this point, Vanderhoof knows exactly what Metal Church fans look for in each release, and on their ninth release overall, the group plays largely by the rules. Despite the absence of familiar faces, the sound is unmistakably Metal Church -- Vanderhoof can still riff with the best of 'em, while singer Ronny Munroe and drummer Jeff Plate sound almost precisely like original members David Wayne and Kirk Arrington, respectively. Turning a blind eye to modern-day metallic trends, A Light in the Dark could easily be mistaken for a thrash metal release of the '80s -- back when Master of Puppets was turning the metal world upside down -- as evidenced by such tracks as the album-opening title track and "Beyond All Reason." And closing the album is a re-recording of Metal Church's best-known track, the eerie "Watch the Children Pray," which is dedicated to Wayne (who passed away in May of 2005) and sticks closely to the original recording. ~ Greg Prato Metal Church Light In The Dark Songs | 1. | Light in the Dark, A |

| Light In The Dark Music Review Average Rating: (4.1 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Top Form Again This is a very good album, period. It is NOT as thrashy as it has been depicted & the comments about it being in the vein of the "Vanderhoof" albums is not completely off base( as there are some atmospheric parts), but it is still Metal Church & it still rocks very hard.
Let me get the only negative outta the way now, it is the song Beyond All Reason. It is not a poor song, it just doesn't fit the album or it shouldn't be the 2nd track (after Light In The Dark comes outta the gate kicking your behind). It is just too slow to be 2nd & drags down the pace.
The rest of this album is extremely riffy with alot of great guitar solos that say it with both heaviness & feeling. No, not that metalcore heavy, HEAVY METAL heavy, just like it is meant to be. It took 3 listens before it all clicked, but damn when it did, I had no problem with this being in my top 10 for 2006.
Ronnie Munroes vox are much better here than on the last album as they have alot more guts to them. If you liked ANY of the first 4 Metal Church albums you should like this album alot.
Highly Recommended for all traditional metal fans.

THIS THEIR BEST ALBUM BY FAR!!! This is for people who say that this band can't pull off their old sound.Well did they?Oh h!ll yeah, this went above, and beyond.I mean I love their original album, but this one has far more musicallity than the original, and judging by what I heard on this I don't think they could have played this well when they did the first album.Plus I'd hate to say it but the new singer is much better, and less of an aquired taste. All in all so far this is their best album... I can't complain... I don't know what people are complaining about here. This sounds like the great Metal Church I know and love. Nothing but good, thrashing American power metal from start to finish. And with all the amazing riffs and blazing solos, what is there not to like? The drums were also recorded better than that of Weight of the World; they have a tighter sound which blends in with the music perfectly. Light In The Dark
$9.99 Dio: Ronnie James Dio (vocals); Craig Goldy (guitar, keyboards); Scott Warren (keyboards); Jeff Pilson (bass instrument); Simon Wright (drums). There's something about a post-millennium album cover that features a giant blue-horned minion of Satan in pre-pounce with an illuminated crystal ball in its leathery hand that simply warms the soul, and the fact that it adorns a record called Master of the Moon can mean only one thing: Dio. Unlike many in the aging metal community, Ronnie James Dio still possesses the same powerful voice that fueled the genre through ...

If you want to determine whether someone is a serious metal connoisseur or has a more casual interest in metal, try running certain names by him/her. It isn't unusual for folks who are only casually interested in metal to have some Metallica, Slipknot, Judas Priest, or Korn in their CD collections -- those are huge, widely publicized bands ...
