Sheila
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop ...

| | Shuggie Otis Inspiration Information CD (1974)
Sheila
$10.89 This is part of LuakaBop's World Psychedelic Classics series.
Ignored upon its release in 1974 and celebrated upon its reissue in 2001, Shuggie Otis' fourth and last album Inspiration Information exists out of time -- a record that was of its time, but didn't belong of it; a record that was idiosyncratic but not necessarily visionary. It was psychedelic soul that was released far too late to be part of any zeitgeist and it was buried at the time. Yet no matter what Luaka Bop's grand poobah David Byrne claims on the sticker -- he says Shuggie's "trippy R&B jams are equal to Marvin's and Curtis', but somehow more contemporary sounding...closer to D'Angelo meets DJ Shadow" -- this isn't revolutionary. It can occasionally ...

Sheila
$12.79 Keali`i was born and raised on Maui, growing up in Lahaina and spending weekends and summers at his grandmother's house in Pa`ia on the windward side of the island. His passion for the language and culture of Hawai`i led him to become the founding director for Punana Leo O Maui, the Hawaiian language immersion school. He also founded his own hula school, Halau Ke`alaokamaile, in 1980 and has won numerous awards over the years. Keali`i is also recognized as one of only five Master Chanters in Hawai`i.In 1994 he independently produced and released a collection of Hawaiian traditional and contemporary songs and chants entitled "Kawaipunahele." His subsequent music releases, "Lei Hali`a" (1995), "E O Mai" (1997), "Melelana" (1999), and "Ke`alaokamaile (2003) have cemented his place in the Hawaiian music industry. All told, he has been awarded 19 ...
| | Tropical Tribute To The Beatles CD (1996) With DVD
Sheila
$15.05 On December 31, 1962, the Beatles performed the classic song "Besame Mucho" at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany, in recognition of the highly emotive music from Latin America. Four decades later, RMM decided to bring the Beatles' greatest hits back, this time played by some of the most prominent Latin artists in a tropical tribute to one of the most influential acts in popular music ever. After the opening track, "Hey Jude," by Puerto Rican singer Tony Vega, Tito Nieves and the percussion virtuoso Tito Puente deliver a freewheeling "Let It Be." The Cuban soloist Guianko performs a salsa version of "Can't ...

| | Various Artists Wondrous India CD (2002)
Sheila
$5.35 Wondrous India is an album of what would primarily be classified as Indian folk music, though elements of the classical realm run rampant. The opening track is a semi-classical dance, performed (aurally) in a stop-and-go fashion with a slight vocal introduction followed by sections of light percussion, heavy percussion, the occasional sitar, and flutes in various combinations with clear demarcations between the movements. Following is a jerky piece for the full ensemble done to decent effect, and a percussion-heavy number in "Ras" that draws the listener back out of the lull caused by "Tillana." As the album progresses, a nice, if rather short, exposition on the sitar shows up in "Sri," and another percussion outing follows, ...
| | Bent Everlasting Blink CD (2003)
Sheila
$13.89 Guidance Recordings is very pleased to announce the signing of Nottingham, England based duo, Bent, whose truly innovative blend of kitsch sci-fi flavors has catapulted then to the forefront of the UK downtempo electronica scene alongside Groove Armada, Blue States, Kinobe and Zero 7. Features 11 tracks including the hit 'Magic Love', packaged in a digipak. 2003.
Together with Kinobe, Air, and Groove Armada, Simon Mills and Nail Tolliday forged their own rivulet from the glacial chill-out movement with their debut album, Programmed to Love. Built upon a foundation of cheeky titles and boot sale samples, there was enough variety to distinguish the Nottingham duo from the swath of other producers knocking out similar groove therapy. This sophomore outing from the pair is a much smoother affair than its predecessor, though; as befits the horizontal nature of the music, it takes a few tracks for the album to get up ...

$48.59 | | Kate Bush Lionheart (Japan LP Sleeve) CD (1978) (Import) Japan; Mini LP Sleeve
Sheila
$39.85 When EMI signed the teenage prodigy Kate Bush, the label claimed that in order to nurture her talent, it wouldn't release her first album until she had a few years to grow up. As a result, her debut, THE KICK INSIDE, didn't see daylight for three years. On the other hand, her second album, LIONHEART, was rush-released only nine months after the success of its predecessor. Fortunately, Kate still had some leftover songs from the debut session, helping make her sophomore effort an equally strong offering.
