| | Gap Band Gold CD Gap Band Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
The Gap Band were one of several acts in the late 1970s and early '80s to built on Parliament's synth-driven, low-end funk, and their string of singles testifies to the strength of their formula. Like nearly every installment in the GOLD series, the Gap Band's is beautifully selected and assembled, giving a definitive and near-comprehensive overview of the band's career. From the band's first hit, 1979's "Shake" to their material from the early '90s, GOLD packs 32 tracks of hard electro-funk and simmering R&B ballads into two discs, including stone-cold classics like "I Don't Believe You Want to Get Up and Dance (Oops Up Side Your Head)" and "You Dropped a Bomb on Me." Those seeking just the hits might opt for a single-disc collection, but GOLD is a thorough, and excellent, package. $9.79 All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
"Never Miss The Water," featuring Me'Shell NdegeOcello, was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
Chaka Khan's career through the 1996 release of Epiphany: The Best of Chaka Khan, Vol. 1 -- involving eight albums with Rufus and eight solo albums, along with assorted collaborations -- produced roughly 40 Top 40 R&B singles, not to mention dozens of undervalued album cuts. So it is clear that any one-disc attempt at wrapping up the highlights is bound to work more like a sampler than a true best-of. And though this release is given the "Vol. 1" tag, it remained without a sequel as late as 2005, when Reprise reissued it without altering the contents. Yet another frustration is that previously unreleased songs take the place of missing classics like "Sweet Thing," "Clouds," "Fate," "Close the Door," and "Stay." (That's just for starters.) Nonetheless, the disc does contain Khan's most popular work, from ballads like "Through the Fire" to anthems like "I'm Every Woman" and "Ain't Nobody," along with other radio staples, such as "I Feel for You" and "Tell Me Something Good." At the absolute least, Khan deserves a solo-only best-of, as well as a disc that sticks strictly to her work with Rufus. (The Very Best of Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan, the only anthology dedicated to Rufus, has its own set of ...
| | Thin Line Between Love & Hate Thin Line Between Love And Hate CD (1996) Original Soundtrack
Gold CD music
$7.59 As soundtracks go, this is a great one for R & B fans. H-Town are here, as is Tevin Campbell and Luniz, and all are in fine form. R. Kelly shows up big with "Freak Tonight," a definitive piece of Kelly-style soul, with a refreshingly minimalist approach--just the groove (a reggae-tinged, mechanical pulse) and Kelly, going through his usual vocal gyrations. The result is a slow number, tailor-made for a slow grind. Other highlights include Ganjah K playing around with Al Green's masterpiece "Love And Happiness," in the course of "Love Got My Mind Trippin." They cop the chorus from Rev. Al, then loop it around a spoken morsel of hip-hop flavor. The result is suprisingly haunting, indeed a compelling piece of music. Drawz' "Thin Line" is pure, hypnotic, and straight outta the hip-hop slow jam recipe book. Grouped together, the songs form a good collection, with a few real gems.
Producers include: Snoop Doggy Dogg, LT Hutton, Roger Troutman, Somethin' For The People, R. Kelly.

| | Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly Greatest Hits CD (2004) Remastered
Gold songs
$9.99 Representative of the transition between late-1970s funk and the smooth R&B that came to dominate '80s pop radio, Frankie Beverly's Maze is rightfully recognized as an important band in the genre. This 2004 compilation brings together 18 of Maze's finest moments, ranging from 1979's bass-popping jam "Workin' Together" to the silky, Quiet Storm vibe of 1993's "The Morning After." In between is more than a decade's worth of accessible soul, including lock-step funk ("Running Away"), slow-pulse love balladry ("Never Let You Down"), and lounge-ready mid-tempo grooves ("We Are One").
Leader, songwriter, and singer Frankie Beverly is the focus here, and his smooth-as-butter croon, complete with emotive R&B embellishments, shines throughout. Though influenced ...
| | Michael Jackson Ultimate Collection CDs (2004) With DVD; Box Set; Special Edition
Gold album
$49.35 While there have been many previous Jackson hits collections, the four-CD/one-DVD ULTIMATE COLLECTION is just that--it represents Jackson's whole career, from his youthful days with the Jackson 5 to the early years of the 21st century. (The rare omissions--"Human Nature," "Heal the World"--show up live on the DVD.) Mixed in with his numerous hits are previously unreleased songs, demo versions of hits, album tracks, and odds and ends, most remarkably, one of the earliest versions of "We Are the World" with almost completely different lyrics. THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION expertly chronicles the career of one of the most important, if unusual, pop artists of all time.
By 2004, Michael Jackson's bizarre image almost completely obscured the talent that had made him an international superstar. However, he became a musical icon by simply being the best at creating and performing pop songs. The opening moments alone of hits like "Rock with You" and "Billie Jean" would make them classic, but every aspect of these songs adds up to perfect radio pop. Jackson's THRILLER, after all, didn't simply luck into being the biggest-selling record of its time; each of its seven Top 10 hits had unique charms and drew from different elements of the pop universe.
