International version features one bonus track, 'Helen Lundeberg'. 2005 had SY revisiting awesome Japan, touring the boroughs of New York, rollicking at the first Arthurfest in L.A., and releasing the special deluxe edition of `GOO.' After one final gnarl out in Brazil with Flaming Lips, The Stooges and others Mr.Jim O'Rourke decided to concentrate full-time on his Japanese studies of language and film and SY was subsequently back to it's OG nucleus of Kim-Thurston-Lee-Steve. Songs were written, Jim recommended engineer TJ Doherty and J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr) recommended mix engineer John Agnello and SY created the oddly titled `Rather Ripped.' The whole deal was recorded in the waning hours of 2005 into the dawn sunshine of 2006 at the venerable Sear Sound studios in NYC's fading theatre district. Partially mixed there and at Hoboken, NJ's Water Music by the golden juice ear of John Agnello it exhibits SY in positive vibration mode. 12 songs of forward motion and harmonic/melodic surprise. Vocals shared by the frontline of Thurston, Kim and Lee with Steve groove gluing the rhythms into rock n roll infection. They bust out o' the sonic barn with Incinerate and Reena then contemplate holy war mind games with Do You Believe in Rapture? and keep cruising strong with track after track of risk-laden rock jammers until floating out with the curious Or. This is a straight-up Sonic Youth field on fire, with a compact potency of rock n roll enlightenment. Rather ripped, indeed.13 tracks in all. Universal. 2006.

Sonic Youth's turn-of-the-century output has shown a marked focus on the more abstract aspects of the band's sound, as evidenced by, if nothing else, the prolific number of experimental releases on the band's SYR imprint, including the double-album tribute to avant-garde composers, GOODBYE 20TH CENTURY. And while to use the phrase "stylistic departure" is unbefitting of a band with such catholic tastes and influences, the straightforward pop element that marks 2006's RATHER RIPPED, the band's 14th proper studio album, is so pronounced and, to a certain extent, jarring, it's difficult not to focus in on it. From the Thin Lizzy-like twin-guitar interlude on "Incinerate" to the gentle lullaby melody of "Do You Believe in the Rapture" (arguably the loveliest song Sonic Youth has produced since "Diamond Sea") to Kim Gordon's newfound pop croon on the opener, "Reena," and "Turquoise Boy," the band hasn't made a record with this many fun, enjoyable tunes in years. Of course, accessible is a relative word when discussing Sonic Youth, and by no means has the band lost its edge. Even at its most poppy, Sonic Youth still twist and gnarl any rock troupe they encounter. But on RATHER RIPPED, the band that essentially created noise rock have once again placed the rock front and center.

Sonic Youth: Kim Gordon (vocals, guitar, bass guitar); Lee Ranaldo, Thurston Moore (vocals, guitar); Steve Shelley (drums).

Rolling Stone (p.67) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A]n excellent record, one of the strongest to emerge from Sonic Youth's amazing late period. Thurston Moore dominates....The guitars ring out with a sense of emotional urgency..."
Rolling Stone (p.102) - Ranked #3 in Rolling Stone's "The Top 50 Albums Of 2006" -- "[A] light, simple, terse, almost-pop album."
Spin (p.59) - Ranked #22 in Spin's "The 40 Best Albums of 2006" -- "[T]heir 20th release extends the most comfortable hot streak in rock history, locating a few more nooks in a self-invented sound that no one else inhabits."
Q (p.118) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]heir most mature album to date, with songs taking centre stage and guitar squall used more selectively."
Alternative Press (p.218) - "RATHER RIPPED is the sound of a band no longer setting their distortion pedals on stun, and, as a result, the best songs are as low-key as a small town on Sunday morning."
Magnet (p.111) - "RATHER RIPPED turns out to be filled with delicate, pretty songs devoid of squall and doused in mellow melody."
The Wire (p.63) - "While it seems improbably that Sonic Youth have fully mellowed, RATHER RIPPED finds them at home with some old fashioned rock verities."
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.64) - "[A] clean collection of smart guitar songs that are low on the trademark-feedback tsunamis of old but high on skewed pop melodies of a Fugazi bent..."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.98) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "RATHER RIPPED is a concise collection of melodious, and pretty straightforward songs: light of touch, compact in construction, sweet on the ear."

There have been dozens and dozens of Motörhead compilations released over the decades, but the first one remains definitive, even if it's not perfect. Released in 1984 as a gap-filler -- for Motörhead were regrouping in the wake of the bandmember shuffling that followed the odd Another Perfect Day album -- No Remorse compiled two-dozen songs across two discs (latter-day editions adding a good serving of bonus tracks, too). Many of the band's best songs to date are here, like "Ace of Spades," "Stay Clean," "Overkill," "Bomber," and "Iron Fist." There are also four new recordings that were cut exclusively for No Remorse: "Killed by Death," "Snaggletooth," "Steal Your Face," and "Locomotive." These four songs were cut by the newly instated four-piece ...

From the opening riff, it's obvious the listener is in for one hell of a ride. It's been two years since Pulley's last album, and in the interim guitarist Jim has departed, thus the title Together Again for the First Time. But being reduced to a quartet has not diminished the band's sound in the least; in fact, Pulley sounds stronger and tighter than ever. The album is packed with a baker's dozen of tracks that crackle with energy, and the production (by Ryan Greene and the band itself) captures the ...

Robin's TestimonyThe reason I live today is because of the incredible love that the Father God has shown me in these last few years.About 5 years ago my marriage came to an exploding end...Together, my husband and I have 4 daughters. At that time, I was on staff at my church, ministering in music. Due to the hardness of my heart with what had taken place, and because I refused to try to work out my marriage, I was asked to step down from that ministry.I was deeply hurt and felt rejected. My identity was in the position and favor I had with the church and in my marriage, but when that was taken from me, it left me devastated and with no sense of purpose. At that time, I did not realize that only in Christ should I have put my security.Feelings went from depression and hopelessness. I started looking for things to fill the places that were empty. I ran right back to the things I had been delivered from many years ago...but this time I was ready to go to the extreme...in my mind, everything and everyone I had counted on had failed me.In the depths of misery I thought, If this was the case, then what was the use anyway? At that point, I had forgotten the call that was on my life and who I was in Christ. Even if I were to end up on the streets or in prison, that appealed to me more than being let down again. Two years passed where I continually involved myself with dangerous and harmful situations and with people that would only use and hurt me more. At that point I didn't care. Although I had been taught differently in church, I thought I had gone too far to go back to the life I had known before this period of time.At the end of the 2 years, the Lord intervened in my life in a huge way. He started sending people into my life that would speak the TRUTH and encouragement to me. The Lord started changing my heart to the point that, out of nowhere, I started grieving for my family that had been torn apart. It wasn't long before I started taking steps to make right decisions. The Lord restored my relationship with my husband. The first year we were back together, everything was great between us, yet I still wasn't free like I had experienced before I walked away from the Lord. I realized I had shamed the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the very acts and lifestyle I had chosen during my time away from Him. Guilt was there because I began to understand what I was capable of doing without Jesus as the focus in my life.At that time, for the first time ever, I finally saw and knew the depth of love that Jesus had for me. He had never left me nor let me go, or given up on me through all of that. I finally understood that Jesus didn't look at me any different when I was doing all those bad things than how He looks at me now! Wow, what a life changing revelation. Now because I know his love for me, I only want to please Him and bring Him honor.Just to let you know, God has restored everything to me and my family's life, but much more than before. Now my testimony, life and my very breath will be used to worship ...
