(1 Customer Review)
Organist Jimmy Smith's second of two LPs for the Elektra Musician label is unusual in a couple of respects. He had never played organ with tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin before and on one piece, "Piano Solo Medley," Smith has a very rare feature on piano. Otherwise, Keep on Comin' is in the soulfully swinging vein that one associates with the great organist, with the music comprised of recent originals by Smith, Griffin, and guitarist Kenny Burrell, who with drummer Mike Baker completes the quartet. ~ Scott Yanow

Jimmy Smith Keep On Comin' Songs Keep On Comin' Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Eventually on CD - great '83 live date from Smith/Griffin!, Wounded Bird Records emerges to be the serious CD format music collector savoir for reissues where the multi national record companies fails in their battle to improve sales figures and technology threats from the internet. Jimmy Smiths "Keep on Comin'" from 1983 is another important and a long awaited addition to the quality reissues at Wounded Bird Records and to Smith collectors. Originally issued on Electra Musicians a year after the great "Off The Top" (same label), this live date from Atlanta Free Jazz Festival is very different and interesting from many of the Smiths live date albums. First, this album is Smiths first recording encounter with tenor titan Johnny Griffin, secondly Smith/Burrell/Griffin brought only original tunes to the concert and last, but not least, Smith plays solo grand piano for the first time live. Like the album title, the quartet display blues drenched soulful organ jazz on "Keep On Comin'" for 12 joyous minutes with a superb Griffinn solo before they settle down with a beautiful interpretation of "Be yourself" written by Kenny Burrell. "No problem" is penned by Smith and played in 4/4 with a serious groove and choruses by all quartet members. The 4:50 minutes of piano solo medley based on Summertime and Yesterdays is a kind of Smith's back-to-his-piano roots, is a pure joy and played better than many jazz pianists would have done! Since the master tapes didn't have any additional concert tracks, this great CD closes with a Griffin original "Callitwhachawana". Like many great live concerts recorded, musicians like Smith/Griffin/Burrell/Baker comes together to play on the same bill, being recorded and never play together again as a quartet. Unfortunately this is life, so hopefully our friends at Wounded Bird Records can lease more memorable master tapes from the vast Smith discography - look at Mojo Records, Mercury, MGM!

Keep On Comin' music CDs
$16.65 The sheer toughness -- and overall derivative -- nature of Killing Floor's debut album, issued six months after Led Zeppelin's debut in 1969 on the Spark label, is a wondrous contrast to the overly slick treatment American blues were given by British artists. All of these tunes, with the exception of one, are revamped versions of songs from the blues canon with different words. The lone "cover" in the set was written by Willie Dixon titled "Woman You Need Love," the tune Zep ripped for "Whole Lotta Love." Despite the fact that this set was issued before by Repertoire, the Akarma version is definitive in that it features the original ...
| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
Keep On Comin' songs
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, and how, despite Fleetwood Mac's success after he left, his ...
| | Legend CD (2007) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
Keep On Comin' album
$16.59 In some circles, Mickey Jupp is something of a minor legend, a roots rocker with excellent taste and a cutting wit, best heard on the songs "Switchboard Susan" and "You'll Never Get Me Up in One of Those," both covered by Nick Lowe. Basher's endorsement is a clear indication that Jupp is a pub rocker, a guy who specializes in laid-back good times, so it shouldn't come as a great surprise that his first band, Legend, was proto-pub, an unabashed celebration of old-time rock & roll, filled with three-chord Chuck Berry rockers and doo wop backing vocals. Nevertheless, listening to their 1970 LP is a bit of a shock, as it's completely disassociated with anything that was happening in 1970, even with Tony Visconti enlisted as their producer. Legend's sensibility is ahead of its time in its retro thinking, pointing ...

| | Sweet Home: Pyeng Threadgill Sings Robert Johnson CD (2004)
Keep On Comin' music CDs
$12.95 Singer and arranger Pyeng Threadgill is the daughter of composer, bandleader, and multi-instrumentalist Henry Threadgill and choreographer/dancer Christina Jones, a founding member of the celebrated Urban Bushwomen. Sweet Home offers 11 Robert Johnson tunes in 11 different settings. While more cynical punters and blues purists (ugh) may sigh or wring their hands at such a notion, everyone else can take delight in Threadgill's considerable accomplishment. Unlike mere revivalists like Eric Clapton or Peter Green, Threadgill hears and interprets Johnson's blues as music not of, but for the ages.
Certainly she has models here, most notably Cassandra Wilson and Olu Dara, but Threadgill's take on these tunes doesn't attempt to remake them in her image, so much their own. Sweet Home's selections are radical. They take Johnson's songs and strips them of the interpetive, anachronistic baggage that has all but killed the spooky and hedonistic majesty of the originals at the hands of well-meaning but woefully rigid performers.
First there's the edgy, swinging jazz read of "Love in Vain," followed by the lean, ragged funk of ...
