| | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
In Reverie CD music
$17.79 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange mix of styles is more effective here than it has been for about a decade, and there's no threat of the album becoming ponderous either as the economical tracklist and purposeful songs wipe away the sins of their previous album, 2005's ROSENROT. The group's loyal fans have remained ...

| | Rods Let Them Eat Metal CD (1984) (Import) Import; Germany
In Reverie music CDs
$27.59 1984's Let Them Eat Metal is probably the most notorious album of the Rods' career, but it's certainly not their best. In fact, it's a veritable catalog of the biggest negative stereotypes of '80s metal -- beginning with the crass misogyny reflected by its objectified and scantily clad cover model, continuing with the increasingly simplified song structures, and rounded out by clichéd subject matter, which is largely confined to nuclear war ("Nuclear Skies"), female bashing ("She's Such a Bitch"), or simply rocking out with one's cock out ("I'm a Rocker"). It hadn't been that way at the beginning for the Rods. Sure, they were never confused with the more sophisticated gentlemen rockers on any given stage, but their everyman street-level credibility spoke volumes on their behalf, instead. Yet, as the years wore on and their commercial failures mounted, the Rods surely noticed that the bulk of America's most successful heavy metal bands (e.g. Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Quiet Riot) were writing music for the lowest common denominator, and thus decided to dumb down their own songs in a bid to compete. Ironically, rather than scoring even a smidgeon of recognition with blockheaded rockers like "She's So Tight," "Got the Fire Burnin'," and the title track, the Rods simply learned, once and for all, that it was really pretty faces capable of attracting ...

| | Cannonball Adderley Ballads CD (2002)
In Reverie album
$12.79 Ballads is a lovely collection of Cannonball Adderley's work on Blue Note from the late '50s to the mid-'60s. Since the nine selections have been taken from nine different albums, the personnel varies widely. The overall mood and approach, however, remain uniform. On "Now I Have Everything" flutist Charles Lloyd, pianist Joe Zawinul, and cornet player Nat Adderley join in for a short, impressionistic lullaby; on "Easy Living" pianist Barry Harris, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Louis Hayes lend their talents to a soulful take on a favorite standard. Adderley's alto paints in broad, expressionistic colors, wringing just a little more feeling from each note of "I Worship You" and "I Can't Get Started." The mood of pieces like "Dancing in the Dark" reminds one of a rainy night in a film noir classic, with the lights reflecting against the wet city streets at three a.m. The last cut, the 15-minute "The Song My Lady Sings," caps off 55 minutes of quiet, reflective jazz. This low-key exit quietly ebbs and flows as the band fills it with atmosphere ...
| | Katatonia Dance Of December Souls CD (1993)
In Reverie CD music
$9.55 With their first full album, 1993's Dance of December Souls, Sweden's Katatonia proved that classic death/doom need not come from England, whence, until then, the genre had flourished at the hands of Paradise Lost, Anathema, and My Dying Bride. In fact, December manages to drag heavy metal to a near-standstill along with the best of 'em, combining cookie-monster growls, slothful riffing, morbid guitar (and, snuck in now and then, morbid synthesizer) melodies, and slow but busy drumming into a mesmerizing wash of depression. Eight-minute highlight "Gateways of Bereavement" and the desolately beautiful instrumental "Elohim Meth" are both perfect examples ...
