| | Joe Satriani Super Colossal CD (2006)
Sin Vuelta Atras songs
$8.99 2006's SUPER COLOSSAL is the 12th studio album from guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani. The master shredder still traffics in arena-sized hard rock instrumentals that provide plenty of room for his melodic, technically dazzling solos. But Satch mixes things up, too, with sunny, country-tinged riffs ("It's So Good"), atmospheric jams ("Ten Words"), and bittersweet love songs ("Made of Tears").
While a record of guitar rock instrumentals might seem in imminent danger of growing stale, Satriani manages to keep things interesting, not only by varying his stylistic approach but by utilizing a wide vocabulary of guitar sounds and effects. And, naturally, guitar players and aficionados of six-string wizardry will find plenty to admire on nearly every track here.
Liner Note Author: Joe Satriani.

Guitarist Jim Hall is the sort of musician who displays such technical expertise, imaginative conception, and elegance of line and phrase that almost any recording of his is worth hearing. Still, CONCIERTO ranks among the best albums of his superb catalogue. For starters, the personnel here is a jazz lover's dream come true. Paul Desmond (saxophone), Chet Baker (trumpet), Roland Hanna (piano), Ron Carter (bass), and Steve Gadd (drums) are on board, creating--along with Hall--one of the highest profile lineups ever put to tape.
Yet CONCIERTO is not about star power and showboating. As subtle, nuanced, and considered as any of Hall's output, ...

| | This Is Hell Misfortunes CD (2008)
Sin Vuelta Atras music CDs
$9.69 With all the mucky-muck that passes off as hardcore (pre- or post-, emo, Elmo, or screamo) in the late 2000s, Long Island, NY's This Is Hell actually achieve some distinction through balance, neither confining themselves inside the genre's unbending dull-as-cardboard basics nor losing their cool with gratuitous musical flailing and hysterical vocalizing. Their second album for Trustkill, 2008's Misfortunes doesn't reinvent the wheel by any stretch, but it does improve upon its immediate predecessor on pretty much all fronts: songwriting, execution, righteous fury, and those all-important gang shouts. Whether they're tackling full-throttle mosh-pit instigators like "Reckless" and "Without Closure," indulging in a breakdown or two for "Infected" and "Remnants," or injecting incremental melody into album standouts "Disciples" and "End of an Era," This Is Hell generally keep listeners engaged in areas where most competitors would have them drooling into pillows or tearing their ...
