Competent pop-punk brushed with adult bathos is the bill of fare on Rise Against's 2006 album, THE SUFFERER AND THE WITNESS. The Chicago group have everything working in their favor here, with top-shelf production by genre veterans Bill Stevenson (All, Descendents, Black Flag) and Jason Livermore (The Ataris), and an appearance in the 2005 film LORDS OF DOGTOWN building momentum for the group. Musically, Rise Against reside at the intersection of aggression, melody, experience, and emotion, merging the heart-on-sleeve sounds of mid-'80s DC hardcore with professionally solid pop a la Weezer. Singer Tim McIlrath's dusky holler is the uniting factor, carrying songs like the anthemic "Prayer of the Refugee" over the finish line with determination and grit.
Rise Against: Tim McIlrath (vocals, guitar); Chris Chasse (guitar, background vocals); Joe Principe (bass guitar, background vocals); Brandon Barnes (drums).
Rolling Stone (p.102) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "With even more shout-along moments and topsy-turvy action, it's rousing, tightly wound and could be the album of the summer for anybody who needs a good yowl in their lives." Spin (p.85) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Guitars rev up and wind down, rhythms blitz forward, then ease off, and frontman Tim McIlrath is just as comfortable crooning an emo power ballad as screaming..." Entertainment Weekly (p.67) - "[T]heir relentless riffs, howling screamo choruses, and pissed-off rhetoric clearly connect with a new generation..." -- Grade: B+ Q (p.115) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Raw and splenetic, their wild-eyed anthems burn with anti-establishment fury. There's no let-up in the pace." Alternative Press (p.204) - 4 out of 5 -- "SUFFERER delivers blow after blow, polished to perfection by producer Bill Stevenson..." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.51) - "[Their] different styles mix together to form something both gut-wrenching and life-affirming." Insainly awsome! Every song is good! It's unbelievabl how many great songs could be on one album. Behind Closed Doors, Survive and Drones are up there but The Good Left Undone is one of the best songs i heard in a long time Submitted by Bird (Cape Breton) Was This Review Helpful? It made me want to live again This album simply is the best. With work like this that easily outshines any other artists out there, it's easy to say Rise Against is a great band. The overplayed Prayer of the Refugee, which I think should rest for a while, is there. The best tracks are Chamber the Cartridge, Injection, Ready to Fall, Drones, Roadside, Prayer of the Refugee, Survive, The Good Left Undone, Worth Dying For, Behind Closed Doors, Bricks, Under the Knife, and the approaching curve. Its prime Rise Against. Buy it. Do it. Submitted by heart.42 (A Little Town In Arizona, AZ, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Love it, love it, LOVE IT! One of my favorite bands now hands down. This album is GREAT every song is a hit and you don't need to get up to switch over a song (maybe just to put the album on loop) 'cause it's just that damn good! Submitted by Phil (Calgary AB) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$9.49 Even though Avenged Sevenfold's first two albums clearly got them lumped into the emo camp, the California quintet always hinted at the heavy metal influence of bands like Iron Maiden. With their major-label debut CITY OF EVIL, not only have they fleshed out these tendencies via the intricate riffing of dual guitarists Zacky Vengeance and Synyster Gates, but they've begun to dabble with more intricate, ...
| | Rise Against Unraveling CD (2001) Bonus Tracks; Reissue; Remastered; Remix
Sufferer & The Witness
$8.65 Rise Against's The Unraveling seems to be a bit of a change for Fat Wreck Chords. Oh, it's still punk (surprisingly, it was recorded by Mass Giorgini), it's just a lot more aggressive and not nearly as cheesy as many of the label's acts. This album is not poppy, and there's ...

Sufferer & The Witness
$12.39 Trouble Is Real by Johnathan Rice finds a romantic with a sultry baritone. He's boyishly charming with vibrant enthusiasm, but he's not just another singer/songwriter with an acoustic guitar, hungry to make a great first impression. This twentysomething is eager for a cinematic path to guide him through life's constant complexities. His vocal delivery is unforgettable, and vocalists such as Peter Gabriel, Nick Drake, and Ed Harcourt come to mind. Ignore the fact that all six of the songs found on 2004's Extended Player 24:26 EP ...
