Donnie Vie - Baby Pictures video
$8.05 Recorded between 1983 & 1994. Includes liner notes by Martin Popoff.
The first domestically available Dio anthology (following the 1994 German import Diamonds), Rhino's The Very Beast of Dio is jam-packed with 16 tracks taken from the band's seven Warner and Reprise albums (spanning the years 1983-1994). Which is to say, it's an excellent overview of the band's career, especially given the unevenness of some of their albums. Ronnie James Dio honed his metal chops singing lead in both Rainbow and Black Sabbath, and his own band is sort of a reflection of both: the sinister, medievally gothic elegance of the former, and the crushingly heavy, doom-laden riffs of the latter. That combination, plus solid songwriting, made Dio's best work some of the most invigorating British metal of the '80s, and those qualities are best ...
| | Great White Greatest Hits CD (2001) Remastered
Donnie Vie - Baby Pictures film
$5.89 A cursory glance at Great White's discography would suggest that they don't need another compilation. But Capitol Records' 1993 kiss-off The Best of Great White: 1986-1992 was a skimpy set that omitted the Top 40 pop hit "The Angel Song" and other key tracks; Back to Back Hits was shared with April Wine and contained only five Great White tracks; the 2000 Best of Great White was a ten-track budget album from Capitol Special Markets; and Latest & Greatest consists of re-recordings. Thus, Greatest Hits is the first thorough compilation of the band's EMI and Capitol recordings, 1984-1992. Most of Great White's pop and album rock hits are included in their original versions, though the minor album rock chart entry "Lady Red Light" is missing, and the versions of "House of Broken Love" and "Desert Moon" are live recordings, the former previously issued only as a single B-side, the latter from the Japan-only album Live in New York. Other rarities include a bluesy alternate mix of "Face the Day" from a cassette EP, the novelty non-LP B-side "Wasted Rock Ranger," and a non-LP single cover of Led Zeppelin's "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" from the band's 1990 MTV Unplugged appearance ...

| | Enuff Z'Nuff ? CD (2004)
Donnie Vie - Baby Pictures DVD
$13.15 Remember the old Timex watch slogan, "Takes a licking and keeps on ticking"? Well, the same could be said about Enuff Z'nuff. The group has been through a lot during its lengthy career -- unwise fashion choices, changing musical tastes, record label snafus, seeing lesser-talented bands of its genre skyrocket -- but the band is still rockin' and rollin', as evidenced by its 12th studio album, ?. While most veteran bands from the "glam rock '80s" decided that a stylistic makeover was in order come the 21st century (cough...Mötley Crüe), Enuff Z'nuff have stuck to their guns through it all. And ? is no different -- power pop that is steeped deeply in Cheap Trick-esque twists and turns, and is also the group's first record in years to include contributions from all four of its original members. If you make it past the purposely (one assumes) hard to take interlude of "Gorgeous," you'll find a fine pop gem -- which sees Chip Znuff assume vocal duties, as well as such other similarly styled highlights as "Home Tonight" and "Harleya," plus a fun album-closing cover of the Queen classic "Stone Cold Crazy." The only downer regarding this solid set is ...
| | Firewind Forged By Fire CD (2005)
Donnie Vie - Baby Pictures movie DVD
$11.49 If jazz can have its Young Lions -- hard bop and post-bop improvisers who came along in the '80s, '90s, or 2000s but faithfully adhere to the straight-ahead jazz of the '40s, '50s, and '60s -- there is no reason why metal shouldn't have its neo-classicist movement. And in fact, metal does have such a movement: the power metal revival movement. Just as the Young Lions of jazz worship at the alter of Clifford Brown, Sonny Stitt, and Art Blakey's long list of Jazz Messengers, the power metal revival bands that emerged in the '90s and 2000s have their own golden era to worship -- and that era is the '70s (when power metal got started) and '80s (when power metal became even more plentiful). Firewind's Forged by Fire is a 2004 recording that worships the '70s and '80s (especially the '80s) without apology, drawing on classic influences like Ronnie James Dio, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Queensr˙che. Totally oblivious to alternative metal, rap-metal, death metal/black metal, and metalcore, Forged by Fire has all of the familiar power metal elements ...
