On his previous albums, guitarist Armik has demonstrated a unique style that places passionate Flamenco finger-picking in a soothing, almost new-age setting. For his 18th album, MI PASION he favors upbeat, heat-creating numbers that draw on his rhythmic strengths and a more percussive right-hand technique. The result is a highly romantic album that sounds even better in the dark.
A new recording by nuevo flamenco guitarist Armik is something like a gorgeous sunset -- always romantic, brilliant and colorful, yet so consistently lovely and perfect that it's easy to take for granted no matter the new shades and textures. Yet it's a true challenge for anyone, once seduced, to take his or her eyes and ears off of the exotic music and the always-striking album cover art that announces another shimmering collection. A fixture on the new age charts for years, his internationally acclaimed recordings have sold over a million and a half units (including one Gold record in Australia), so it's clear that the phenomenon is nearly as pervasive as the sunset. Armik's beautifully blends seductive, snappy toe-tappers as on Mi Pasion's opening track "Calima" (punctuated with scorching horn accents) and "Rumba de Noche" (featuring some of his best acoustic soloing over hypnotic percussion) with suavely romantic gestures à la the sweetly ambient title track and the swaying contemplation "Bolero." These softer tunes, as well as graceful midtempo pieces like "Warm Summer Nights" (which includes a dash of flute and horns), show a gentler side to his artistry -- and it's nice to see that melodic expression takes precedence over any tendency towards a barrage of notes for notes' sake. A telling thing about Robert Plant at his peak is how he would sneak on-stage with Rockpile and sing Elvis songs, or how Swan Song signed Dave Edmunds when his retro-rock was about the furthest thing from the monolithic Zeppelin of Physical Graffiti. Plant always harbored deep, abiding love for early rock & roll, a fact that was often obscured by his restlessness, too, a side that he indulged on his first two post-Zep solo albums -- glistening, modern albums with a heavier debt to Robert Fripp than Little Richard. During the last few years Ashish Sankritayan and Skye Løfvander have performed together in a broad variety of different acoustic spaces in a constant quest to develop a common platform for their individual styles to inspire each other without com-promising their core. The concerts of the duo are profound meetings between east and west, tradition and innovation.Dhrupad and overtone singing is an unusual combination, which is fertile for many reasons: The Indian music has its basis in the exact perception of the regularities of the harmonic series which is the prime material for all overtone singers. Furthermore, many of the melodic lines that are used have roots in both the old Indian and European traditions. Given the opportunity to use Odeon’s simulations, the duo could choose the acoustic spaces which suited each of their different musical expressions the most.The recordings were executed in the 1,000 m3 anechoic room at the Technical University of Denmark, which is one of the best of its kind. The use of Brüel & Kjær low noise microphones provided a rendering of the singing as dry and neutral as technically possible. Afterwards the simulated acoustics were added to the recordings. The studio situation was a striking contrast to the noble resonant spaces of the past and also a challenge for the singers, but the resulting recordings are absolutely worth the effort.Ashish Sankrityayan is one of the leading dhrupad singers of our time. Dhrupad has its roots back in the hymns and prayers of Vedic times, but has become transformed into a deeply meditative and subtly refined art form. During the mogul rule in North India – at the time of Sinan in Turkey - it achieved a status as court music, and its rich grammar was formalized. Dhrupad is performed with a unique presence, ultimately being created in the moment, improvised on a basis of an intricate framework.
