After being dropped by Earache, Society 1 re-emerged on Crash Music -- and the first thing that Crash released by the Los Angeles band was The Years of Spiritual Dissent, which is dominated by previously released material even though it isn't really a best-of. Crash marketed this two-disc package (an audio CD and a bonus DVD) as a "precursor" to Sadist Messiah, an album of new songs that was given an early 2007 release date. Most of The Years of Spiritual Dissent's audio CD is devoted to recordings from the two albums that Society provided in their pre-Earache days (Slacker Jesus, their debut album of 1999, and the follow-up Words as Carriers, released by bandleader Matt Zane), and that material ranges from industrialized alternative metal to spoken word. It's an unusual combination (how many alt-metal bands are into spoken word?), but Zane's spoken word performances are darkly intriguing (if somewhat self-indulgent). The metal offerings are generally solid and infectious alternative metal/industrial metal tracks such as "Thinking Is the Link," "Let's Do It," and "Look at Your Life," underscoring Zane's fondness for White Zombie, Godflesh, and Ministry. Those influences are equally evident on the new tracks, which include the bludgeoning "This Is the End" and an inspired cover of Alice Cooper's "Sick Things." Meanwhile, the bonus DVD's main attraction is an in-depth interview with Zane and his colleagues; Zane speaks candidly about Society's colorful history as well as his years in the porn industry (before he gave up porn to concentrate on music full-time, Zane was a successful porn director). Taken as a whole, The Years of Spiritual Dissent is slightly uneven. But all things considered, it paints an attractive picture of Society 1's contributions to alternative metal and industrial metal. ~ Alex Henderson
This CD/DVD set includes albums Slacker Jesus and Words as Carriers, plus cover songs, unreleased track, and 2 hour DVD documentary. Included on the DVD is a new DVD, lots of T&A, live suspensions clips, interviews with the band members, outrageous live footage, and plenty of never before seen band pranks. Years Of Spiritual Dissent songs
$14.79 (MP3 Available for Download) As always, frontman Chad Kroeger's gritty voice remains Nickelback's calling card, and his emotive singing carries every tune, most notably the nostalgic "Photograph" and "Far Away," a tender, echo-laden ballad. Kroger has never met a guitar effect that he didn't like, as evidenced by the revved-up "Next Contestant," which relates the, ahem, difficulties of having a beautiful girlfriend. Though ALL THE RIGHT REASONS is slightly more eclectic than the group's ...

Years Of Spiritual Dissent album
$11.85 (MP3 Available for Download) Recorded live at the Fillmore West, San Francisco, California on December 19-22, 1968. Includes liner notes by Alan Di Perna.
Eight months prior to their triumphant worldwide debut at Woodstock, Santana played a 4-night set at the Fillmore West on December 19-22, 1968. The resulting 2-disc recording from this fertile developmental period ably demonstrates the remarkably creative path Carlos Santana took to inevitable fame. Utilizing a line-up that included Gregg Rolie, vocals and keyboards, David Brown, bass, Doc Livingston, drums and Marcus Malone, congas, the band's sound was a tasty gumbo of rhythm and passion.
As evidenced in their set list, Santana's influences at this time included ...

Stone Sour isn't the first successful Slipknot side project; the Murderdolls (just barely) beat them to the starting gate. Like that group, though, Stone Sour actually started out long before Slipknot, but was ultimately revisited as an alternative to the Slipknot grind. Knotmen (if you will) Corey Taylor and Jim Root and their Stone Sour brethren offer nu-metal that's fully as hard-hitting as that of their day-job group, but with considerably more thoughtful compositional techniques and melodic sensibility. Sure, Taylor occasionally breaks into a gut-wrenching scream, but just as often he's twisting his voice around a serpentine melodic line that brings Alice in Chains to mind more ...
| | Mop Top Pop: Beat Beat Beat Vol. 3 CDs (2002)
Years Of Spiritual Dissent songs
$17.35 The third entry (subtitled "Mop Top Pop") in this retrospective series of chronological reissues of Pye Records' releases covers the tail-end of the first wave of the British Invasion, from April through July of 1964. Interspersed with promising outfits like the Kinks and the label's one hugely successful act, the Searchers, are more great records by the likes of the Chants and the Trends, who never got the recognition they deserved, and a lot of acts that undeservedly barely made it out of the starting gate, most notably Shane & the Shane Gang, whose bluesy "Whistle Stop" is almost worth the price of admission. It's amazing to see performers like Johnny Sandon (best known in America as a footnote in the Searchers' history) still pushing their work at this relatively late date (and good work ...
