Original Soundtrack album
$11.89 The most booty-kickin' spoof Metal group to come down the pike since Spinal Tap is Steel Dragon, the Mark Wahlberg-fronted hair band in the film ROCK STAR. Along with other '80s metal tracks and modern tunes, this soundtrack makes for a great listen.
ROCK STAR is based on Tim "Ripper" Owens, who left his Judas Priest cover band to join the real thing. The cover band in the film is Blood Pollution, who give us the catchy, hard-rocking "Wasted Generation." Steel Dragon does a full-throttle cover of Rainbow's "Long Live Rock And Roll" that retains the spirit of the original. Steel Dragon's original tunes such as "Livin' the Life" and "Stand Up" are straight out of 1987, with the screaming ...
| | Paint Your Wagon CD (1969) Original Soundtrack
Original Soundtrack CD music
$7.79 The movie Paint Your Wagon was an attempt to update the plot of an old stage musical by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, with new songs by André Previn and Lerner. The soundtrack is a peculiar release; in purely musical terms, it would only be of interest to dedicated fans of Harve Presnell (who performs "They Call the Wind Maria") and Anita Gordon, who acquits herself well singing Jean Seberg's part on "A Million Miles Away Behind the Door." It is Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin, however, who do more of the singing here, and while they might not be of much interest musically, there is a certain "Golden Throats"-type allure to their songs. Neither reveals any hidden musical talents, though Eastwood does the better job of the two on his songs, particularly "I Still See Elisa." The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band also spent time working on the movie, both on camera and on the soundtrack, but their major surviving contribution is "Hand Me Down That Can O' Beans," in which they share the spotlight vocally with Lee Marvin and a male chorus; it adds nothing to their output. Harve Presnell's rendition ...

| | National Lampoon's Animal House CD (1978) Enhanced CD; 20th Anniversary
Original Soundtrack songs
$6.55 NATIONAL LAMPOON'S ANIMAL HOUSE (20th Anniversary Edition) is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as multimedia computer files with trailers and EPK from ANIMAL HOUSE.
Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Dan Hersch at DigiPrep, Hollywood, California.
Animal House is a classic frat-house comedy, full of low-brow humor and outrageously entertaining vulgarity. The soundtrack nearly captures that atmosphere on record, even though it has a couple of flaws. The meat of the soundtrack lies in a selection of great rock & roll and R&B oldies, including Chris Montez's "Let's Dance," and Bobby Lewis' "Tossin and Turnin'," Paul & Paula's "Hey Paula," and Sam Cooke's "Twistin' the Night Away" and "Wonderful World." No matter how good these tracks are -- and they are great -- their impact is lessened by the re-recorded oldies from Lloyd Williams ("Shout," "Shama Lama Ding Dong") and John Belushi ("Money," "Louie Louie"), as well as two light-weight Steven Bishop songs and Elmer Bernstein's instrumental "Faber College Theme." While those songs reflect the boozy pleasures of the movie, they don't sound quite as good when isolated on record. Nevertheless, the soundtrack remains a good party -- even if its momentum sags occasionally. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Scorpions Taken By Force CD (1978) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Japan; Remastered
Original Soundtrack album
$30.55 A unique remaster of the highly successful German metal group's 2001 release; includes "I've Got To Be Free" and "Your Light." 2002, Japanese import.
Less brutal than the two previous albums, this one is nonetheless an underappreciated treat. Sure, there are some weak cuts, but there are plenty of strong ones to make up for it. Among the highlights of the disc are the energetic anthem "Steamrock Fever" and the growling song of androgyny "He's a Woman, She's a Man." The highlight of the disc, though, is "We'll Burn the Sky." This one is lyrically quite similar to the Blue Oyster Cult classic "Don't Fear the Reaper," but the music is a wonderfully building anthemic ballad. It is arguably one of the finest songs the Scorpions have ever done. ~ Gary Hill

| | Vanishing Point CD (1971) Original Soundtrack
Original Soundtrack CD music
$12.19 The 1971 movie Vanishing Point managed to become a cult hit, with its story of a Benzedrine-popping driver (Barry Newman) in a race for his life with the police of several states, but somehow the soundtrack managed to remain out-of-print until 2004, when Soundtrack Classics reissued it on CD. The music is surprisingly cohesive, primarily built around different aspects of country-rock as ...
| | George Sone Perform The Music Of Stewart Dirk Fischer CD (2004)
Original Soundtrack music CDs
$14.99 While it has been the rage for some time for every twenty-something musician who gets a record date to concentrate on original material, many of them would be wise to look for neglected compositions by veteran musicians like Stewart "Dirk" Fischer. Fischer, whose career has been devoted to jazz education rather than recording, is the brother of the well-known pianist Clare Fischer. He contributed ten originals and all of the arrangements for this big-band date led by trumpeter and flügelhornist George Stone (who also plays piano and vibes on the session). The players rise to challenge of Fischer's demanding charts, which feature a number of talented young musicians, along with seasoned artists such as Gary Foster. The swanky "Hamilton Allen Esquire" has a fine solo by guitarist Steve Gregory and a sizzling effort by tenor saxophonist Bill Liston. The well-named "Plucky" puts the spotlight on bassist Trey Henry, whose playing bring to mind the late Ray Brown. "Donde" is a very deliberate Latin jazz number, featuring Clare Fischer on acoustic piano. Fischer's sense of humor becomes obvious ...
