It has been called grisly, sick, and perverse as well as raw, unshakeable, and the movie that redefined horror. It was attacked by churches, banned by governments, and acclaimed by only the bravest of critics. It stunned audiences worldwide and set a new standard in movie terror forever. In 1974, writer-producer-director Tobe Hooper unleashed this dark, visionary tale about a group of five young friends who face a nightmare of torment at the hands of a depraved Texas clan. Today it remains unequaled as a landmark of outlaw filmmaking and unparalleled in its impact as perhaps the most frightening motion picture ever made. The second DVD includes documentaries and more. The granddaddy of all splatter films. Five teenagers driving through rural Texas stumble onto an old farmhouse which turns out to be inhabited by a ghoulish family of mass murderers. Chainsaws and meat hooks are the tools of these white trash psycho-killers' trade -- they decorate their home with human bones, skin and other gruesome relics, supplementing the body count with corpses from the local graveyard when fresh victims are scarce. It looks like curtains for certain for the teen travellers trapped inside this house of horrors -- unless one scantily-clad female can elude the powertools and survive the night of terror intact. THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE is, without a doubt, the granddaddy of all splatter films. Inspired by 1950s mass murderer Ed Gein, Tobe Hooper's debut feature opens with five unsuspecting teenagers driving in a van through sun-scorched rural Texas. After a terrifying exchange with a demented hitchhiker, the group ends up at an old farmhouse. At first, the house appears to be abandoned, but soon, the evil residents begin to wreak havoc on the youngsters' lives. With her friends and wheelchair-bound brother Franklin (Paul A. Partain) disappearing one by one, the terrified Sally Hardesty (Marilyn Burns) must summon the strength to escape from the ghoulish family of mass murderers, who are led by the gruesome, chainsaw-wielding Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen).
Hooper's low-budget exploitation horror film became a cult hit and favorite midnight movie that helped define the splatter genre by introducing such standard features as the house of terror, where innocent victims meet horrible ends, and the girl in peril who survives the mayhem to become the heroine. Spawning several sequels, as well as a 2003 remake, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE remains an untouchable work of sheer terror that continues to shock audiences all over the world. Theatrical release: October 1974
TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE was director Tobe Hooper's first feature film.
The film's estimated budget was $350,000.
Featured songs by Roger Bartlett & Friends, Timberline Rose, Arkey Blue and Los Cyclones.
The film was loosely based on the real-life crimes of Ed Gein, which also inspired Hitchcock's PSYCHO.
John Larroquette makes an uncredited vocal appearance, providing the film with it's unsettling opening narration. Texas Chainsaw Massacre Video Texas Chainsaw Massacre Movie Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews BEST EDITION I already own TCSM on DVD 3 times (!) and twice on video, but bought this mainly for the additional (new) documentary. Basically, the film looks great - the best quality i have ever seen it. On previous DVD additions you can still see splice marks where the film has been edited but they are gone here. At times it's like watching a new film. My only gripe being that this doesn't contain the memorabilia photo gallery that was on the Blue Dolphin DVD. Also the documentary 'SHOCKING TRUTH' is radically different to the edit of the original UK Expoited tape/DVD and this disc doesn't contain the extra convention footage that release did. But owning those already, i was very pleased with this edition of my all time favourite film. Submitted by wayne zenith (nothingham, england) Was This Review Helpful? CLASSIC Tobe Hooper creates a landmark masterpiece that is still regarded as one of the greatest horror movies ever made. It still shocks me that such a low budget film has become such a global phenomenon. Leather face is such a primal serial killer and one of the first boogeymen to appear on screen. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was highly influenced by the Vietnam War and it points out the violent and crazed society that people were living in back in 1974 while the Vietnam War was happening. It basically paradises the world we live in, but in a more non-acceptable way. It also criticizes other movies which had become lifeless and boring during that time of cinema and it changed the diet of film, as well as three other classic films from the early 70's, Stanley Kubrick’s - A Clockwork Orange(1971), Wes Cravens - The Last House on the Left(1972) and William Friedkins - The Exorcist(1973). The Texas Chainsaw Massacre continued the legacy of edgy and exciting film-making which criticizes how boring other American films had become during that time. Based on a real life serial killer named Ed-Gein, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was surrounded by so much controversy and is regarded as one of the most raw and perverse horror films ever created which features a chainsaw wielding maniac who is apart of a crazy family which torture and kill 4 innocent victims who take a summer afternoon drive. It is such a classic film which changed the face of horror. This film was full of amazing moments and chilling visuals. An amazing moment is when leather face first makes his appearance on screen and smashes the guy over the head with a hammer and then slams the metal door behind him. That was one of the most chilling scenes in any horror movie I’ve ever seen. Or maybe that infamous chase in the woods is what the film is most remembered for. Or maybe even when the crazy family is eating dinner while mocking and torturing Sally. This film is full of disturbing scenes that will leave you breathless every time you watch it. I highly advice this classic film to anyone who appreciates cinema. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is over 30 years old, yet is still one of the greatest films ever made. Very Good This is the most craziest movie ever, the chase scene was non stop, the ending will keep you on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend this to any horror fan in the world. Submitted by burninhell95 (Sydney, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
ONE OF THE GREATEST This is one of the greatest horror flicks I've ever seen. This movie was so well down and it was the first real horror film that broke alot of boundaries back in 1973. This topped all of it's sequals including the remakes. The scene where he is chasing the girl in the woods with a chainsaw is one of the greatest scenes in horror movie history. If your a fan of classic horror films than this dvd is definately a must have. You'll enjoy it. Submitted by Jacob44 (Washington, DC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
TOBE HOOPERS TCM STILL OUTSHINES THEM ALL "Who will survive and what will be left of them" going into this movie you're already thinking, and this is one of the rare movies that lets the viewer think what it wants, which makes the movie all that more potent. There is not excess gore, violence or a huge body count and what you do see and hear allows you to use your mind and that is where your imagination takes over and you become part of the movie. Ask anyone who has seen this movie and 9 out of 10 times what they say happened is what their imagination saw . That is why Tobe Hooper is a genius, because he lets the viewer add what they will, even upon repeat viewing's Texas Chainsaw Massacre doesn't lose that power. Even the cast was perfect, although sadly underrated, unknown and grossly underpayed (if they were even payed at all), had anybody else been used it would not have been as good. Nobody but Edwin Neal could have portrayed "The Hitchhiker" as well as he did. And the way Marilyn Burns became" Sally" it's like you were right there with her. Jim Siedow added so much with just his facial expressions let alone his acting and nobody and I do mean nobody could of done Leatherface as good as Gunnar Hansen did. His chainsaw dance at the end is phenomenal. The budget being so low also added to the final outcome of how good the movie is. Every aspect of this movie worked. That is why The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is in a class of its own. Both of Rob Zombie's (excellent) movies have the feel of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, you can tell he was definitely influenced. To all of the younger movie fans out there, before you watch a movie at least take into consideration the year the movie was first released. If your diet of horror movies is only from the 80's or 90's (where it was basically body count , skin , & a ton of special effects) & more recently the "safe PG-17" (so we milk as much money as possible out of the youth) your only watching with your eyes and not your imagination. Not that I don't like those kinds of movies, I too am also a HUGE Horror movie aficionado/junkie; especially any and all ZOMBIE movies, I've seen hundreds of underground, B-grade, cheesy, low budget movies, including every TROMA movie ever produced. At least be open minded when viewing a movie. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the first in the genre and still the best. Before Michael, Jason, Freddy, Pinhead, Chucky etc. etc. and countless other 80's & 90's bad guys (or girls) Leatherface still outshines them all. The quality of the movie itself on this Ultimate edition is reason enough to pick it up. The bonus features are killer you get a very interesting commentary with Tobe Hooper, Gunnar Hansen & Daniel Pearl with some killer info about filming, effects used, and recollections from all three. Also included is another commentary with Marilyn Burns, Paul A. Partain, Allen Danziger, and art designer Robert A. Burns. "Texas Chain Saw Massacre: The Shocking Truth" & "Flesh Wounds" two very well done documentaries. Also a tour of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre house with Gunnar, deleted scenes, outtakes, bloopers, trailers, TV and radio spots & much more, plus it comes in a tin case. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Ultimate Edition DVD should be in every horror movie collection. This is the sixth edition of Texas Chainsaw Massacre that I have purchased & definitely worth owning. Another edition worth having is the "Chainsaw Flip Case" which has 2 DVD's inside of a Chainsaw - very nice packaging.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre review
$32.69 Television executives plugged into viewers' deepest fears with the debut of TALES FROM THE CRYPT in 1989. Its original source material was the EC comic-book; the series originated on HBO and would go on to run for seven seasons. Hosted by the skeletal Crypt Keeper himself, each episode of the show offered a new, ghoulish tale to inspire nightmares in its audience. The show was such a success that a myriad of CRYPT-inspired spin-offs resulted, including an animated series, several feature films, and seemingly infinite merchandising opportunities. A popular favorite among horror film fans, TALES FROM THE CRYPT also appeals to anyone who loves the strange and visceral thrill of being scared. The show's entire third season is included here.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre DVD
$23.29 At a time when most of the first wave of Norwegian black metal bands are long gone, Darkthrone has become the senior figures of this particular subgenre almost by default; they're like the Rolling Stones of death metal. And much like the Rolling Stones around the time of Some Girls and Emotional Rescue, Darkthrone now seems to be caught between staying true to their original sound and adapting to the commercial marketplace. The album's first single, "Too Old, Too Cold" is easily the most immediately accessible song the band has ever done, sounding more like American hardcore punks the Misfits than anyone else, and elsewhere "Graveyard Slut" and "Whiskey Funeral" add to the album's punky feel. Longtime fans might grouse about the somewhat diluted sound of the album, but the shift in emphasis is both subtle and effective. Rather than simply going through the black metal motions, The Cult Is Alive is one of Darkthrone's most satisfying recent albums. ~ Stewart Mason
Never failing to keep the creative wheels turning, Norwegian black metal band Darkthrone are back with their 12th album, The Cult Is Alive. Though they've became known as one of the most notorious and influential black metal bands to appear in the Norwegian black metal scene, they have now begun to make larger changes in their style. The Cult Is Alive shows the band writing away from black metal and into a more punk-oriented sound. Includes the enhanced video track 'Too Old, Too Cold' that has been slated as the first single. Includes different artwork than the regular CD, and an exclusive double sided poster packaged in a deluxe clam box. Peaceville. 2006.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre video
$14.45 Though it's spawned a handful of sequels, it took more than 30 years for Tobe Hooper's ever-potent horror classic to get an "origin" story. Why is Leatherface so angry? Whose face does he wear as a mask? How did his family get their taste for human flesh? A 2003 remake revisited the original film, painted with post-millenial gloss by former music video director Marcus Nispel. For his second feature, director Jonathan Liebesman (DARKNESS FALLS) follows suit, though wisely eliminating the heavy rock soundtrack of the remake.
The film opens with the 1949 birth of the child who would become Leatherface--to an obese slaughterhouse worker. She dies during childbirth and the deformed baby is later found in a dumpster by his adoptive mother. Twenty years later, Chrissy (Jordana Brewster), Dean (Taylor Handley), Bailey (Doira Bird), and Eric (Matthew Bomer) are driving cross country before Dean leaves for his second tour of duty in Vietnam. A run-in with some bikers leads to an intervention by crazed cannibal clan leader Hoyt (R.Lee Ermey), who has just killed the sheriff of the dwindling Texas town and taken on the mantle himself. The chainsawing begins soon after.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre film
$10.19 The grisly and debauched film PATHOLOGY is a juiced-up medical thriller that plays like FLATLINERS with a mean streak and a broken moral compass. Writers Mark Nelvedine and Brian Taylor have created a premise allowing for CSI-like forensics along with heaps of sex and violence, truly making the most of the film's R-rating. A high-end exploitation film with good performances, PATHOLOGY is strong enough for horror fans and should go down smoothly for non-squeamish viewers with a taste for the dark side.
Gifted med student Ted Grey (Milo Ventimiglia, HEROES) arrives at a major Washington, D.C., as an intern, where he is met with suspicion and resentment by the tightly knit group of fellow young pathologists-in-training. Soon, though, Ted is accepted into their circle---where they each take turns committing a murder so that the others may prove their mettle by figuring out the cause of death and celebrate with drug-fueled orgies among the dead bodies in the hospital. Things change for Ted, though, when his law student fiancée, Gwen (Alyssa Milano), moves to the city and helps to scare him straight. Soon, crazed Wallace Stevens-quoting leader Jake Gallo (Michael Weston) turns on Ted, putting both Ted's and Gwen's lives in serious jeopardy. The film opens with the Hippocratic Oath, and it's easy to tell that PATHOLOGY is going to show us doctors behaving badly, and the film is in fact almost gleefully immoral, with an attractive young cast that engages in almost any kind of forbidden behavior one can imagine. Showing that he isn't afraid to take on risky roles, Ventimiglia may surprise his young fans. Director Marc Schoelermann's taste for realism extends to several convincing corpses dissected in close-up, and could prove too much for some viewers, but for others this is the kind of film for which unrated releases were invented.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie DVD
$12.85 Director Sam Raimi's first film has achieved legendary status since its 1982 release, and for good reason. Though perhaps not as widely seen as its two sequels, EVIL DEAD 2 and ARMY OF DARKNESS, THE EVIL DEAD is arguably the best of the three. It is the story of five college-age friends who travel to a cabin in rural Tennessee where the stumble upon the Book of the Dead, an ancient tome bound in human flesh and inked in blood. After unwittingly awakening the unspeakable terror told of in the book, each of the friends is transformed into the evil dead, one by one, except for Ash (Bruce Campbell). So, Ash is left with no other way to survive than to dismember the living corpses of his sister, girlfriend, and two of his friends. Shot on a shoestring budget, the film boasts some impressive camera work and extremely over-the-top gore effects as well as a sense of humor much more subtle than the tongue-in-cheek aesthetic of the two sequels.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre film
$10.05 E. Elias Mehrige's SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE explores the fictional premise that the star of director F.W. Murnau's 1922 German expressionist horror film, NOSFERATU, was an actual vampire. When the dictatorial Murnau (John Malkovich) sets about filming his monster masterpiece, he makes a Faustian deal and enlists the grotesque, reclusive Max Schreck (Willem Dafoe) to play the rodentlike Count Orlok. Schreck proceeds to both horrify and fascinate the unwitting cast and crew---including producer Albin Grau (Udo Kier), actor Gustav von Wangenheim (Eddie Izzard), and actress Greta Schroeder (Catherine McCormack)--who, at first, believe Schreck is merely an eccentric actor. As the production continues, however, mysterious accidents and deaths begin to reveal why Schreck never gets any makeup.
From its lavish opening sequence to Murnau's filming of the final scene, Mehrige's movie serves as a tribute not only to the original NOSFERATU but to the art of cinema itself. Because Murnau's project is a silent film, the overbearing director can coax and shout at his actors during the takes, making for some cleverly comical scenes. Although Malkovich, Izzard, and Kier are excellent in their roles, SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE could simply not exist without Dafoe's hideous and hilarious performance, which ranks among the finest of the versatile actor's career.
