Principally recorded at Real World, Box, England; Air Lyndhurst, England; and
"The Barry Williams Show" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
Though much effort has obviously been put into the sonic details of UP's production, and to fine effect, the album seems to represent not so much a new direction for Peter Gabriel, but rather a consolidation of the styles he's mined in preceding years. For instance, the opening track "Darkness" combines the dark, tension-filled paranoia of Gabriel's third self-titled album with the positive, seemingly therapy-derived lyrical direction of US's "Digging in the Dirt." Similarly, the heartworn emotionality of "No Way Out" brings to mind US's "Red Rain," but adds some slinky spy-movie guitar lines.
With a decade passing since his last album of new songs, Gabriel clearly has much to say, and accordingly most tracks hover around the seven-minute mark and are filled with sophisticated, enticing touches in an agreeable electronic/organic blend. With nothing to prove anymore, Gabriel sounds appropriately unconcerned about commerciality, as the only thing that comes within shouting distance of an "accessible" track is the TV-sensationalism parody "The Barry Williams Show," whose length and gritty lyrics make it an unlikely candidate for the top 40. In the end, UP is the sound of a mature artist pursuing the perfection of his craft, giving little thought to anything but the realization of his distinctive artistic vision.
(2-LP's with a 7" 45 rpm of "The Barry Williams Show") This is the vinyl version of Peter Gabriel's critically acclaimed new 2002 album "Up," his first release in nearly ten years, and it will likely be hailed as his masterpiece. Dark and mysterious with

Up album
$12.29 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't stray far from what they do best. Warren Haynes and his guitar are, as usual, front and center, his guitar screaming, his big throaty growl hammering down lyrics like a Southern fire-and-brimstone preacher with earthshaking soul. The material on this set is tight; there is less jamming but Gordie Johnson's production and mixing equalize everything at ten, making it feel like the disc is recorded live.
The set opens with the pulsing bass throb of "Broke Down on the Brazos," just before Haynes and guest guitarist Billy Gibbons enter and let the tough, riff-laden blues snarl get in and slash it up a bit. The roar is wondrously deafening and the pace is fierce. Likewise, the slightly more tuneful "Steppin' Lightly" does anything but. With its funky big rock trio riff, it kicks up dust with Haynes playing some killer funk-laden fills as Carlsson and Abst syncopate and pop through both hard rock and reggae backbeats. The hook on the choruses is a nice surprise, but it's anything BUT a pop song. Other notables include the Delta blu
| | Creed Full Circle CD (2009) Digipak
Up CD music
$13.59 Getting right back to where they started from, Creed reunites for Full Circle, putting all tensions to rest and cutting their first album in eight years. FULL CIRCLE is a none-too-subtle allusion to how they're getting back to their beginnings, but a cynic could say they never got much past it, toiling the same weathered ground on each of their albums, but this bears some subtle differences, particularly in how Creed sounds heavier yet more open than they did in the past. While they're still delivered with the finesse of a hammer on a railroad spike, there's more air within the ballads, more skill in their attack, a looseness to their playing that allows them to take a stab at white-boy blues on the title track. "Full Circle" is one of several songs built on prominent acoustic guitar, an indication of the greater color palette here than on, say, HUMAN CLAY, and that lack of reliance on thudding guitars does make FULL CIRCLE less wearying than earlier Creed, but don't mistake this for subtlety: ambiguity is not Creed's friend; they still italicize, bold, and underscore every emotion.
Personnel: Scott Stapp (vocals); Mark Tremonti (guitar); Howard Benson (keyboards, programming); Scott Phillips (drums).

THE BEATLES (generally known as "The White Album" because of its cover) was a sprawling two-record set, highlighting the distinct personalities in the group as they matured and moved further away from each other. With the four Beatles playing like session men on each other's songs, the making of the album was fraught with tension. John Lennon's songs included a bitter take on people who read too much into the Beatles' lyrics ("Glass Onion"), reflections on loneliness and alienation ("Yer Blues," "I'm So Tired"), and the avant garde sound collage "Revolution 9."
George Harrison's songs offered black humor ("Piggies") and tender sadness ("While My Guitar Gently Weeps," with Eric Clapton on guitar). Paul McCartney provided both light, lyric songs ("Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da," "Honey Pie"), and rockers ("Back In The U.S.S.R.," the explosive "Helter Skelter"). Ringo Starr made his solo songwriting debut with the goofy country/ska lilt of "Don't Pass Me By" and sang the album closer "Good Night."
Recorded at Abbey Road Studios and Trident Studios, London, England between May and October 1968.

$10.29 One thing about the Trouble Man label, they sure embrace unconventionality -- as evidenced by such experimental, patience testing releases as Double Leopards' A Hole Is True and Mouthus' Slow Globes. Whereas the former is best described as sounding like a seemingly never ending wind tunnel, the latter at least has some resemblance to music. But still, that's not saying much. An album chock-full of drones and randomly placed notes (which are so processed you can't tell which instrument is being played), Slow Globes sounds about as "made up on the spot" as you can get. Listened to at a loud volume, the album can perhaps best be used as the ultimate musical weapon -- guaranteed to clear a room in under five minutes flat. What did I do in a past life to deserve this? Please, make it stop already! ~ Greg Prato

$14.29 | | Rick Ross Trilla Vinyl LP (2008)
Up album
$12.05 This second album by Miami (by way of Haiti) rapper Rick Ross is one of the most hotly anticipated sophomore releases of the year. This collection is a more than respectable follow-up to his monster debut. The album--produced by J-Rock, the Runners, Cool & Dre, and others--features the hit single "Speedin'," with guest singer R. Kelly.
Two years after the Trick Daddy protégé hit the scene with his exceptional debut, PORT MIAMI, Rick Ross follows up with another thorough studio album rife with vivid gangsta storytelling and hard-thumping neo-G-Funk. On the whole, TRILLA is more party-oriented than the brooding PORT OF MIAMI, as Ross collaborates with a formidable group of big names from the worlds of contemporary R&B and hip-hop (R. Kelly, Trey Songz, T-Pain, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Nelly, Mannie Fresh, and Young Jeezy, among others). But Freeway Ricky still finds time to weave his grim drug-trade narratives over a handful of more menacing underground tracks, too. J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, the Runners, Drumma Boy, Jonathan Rothem, DJ Toomp, and DJ Nasty handle production.

Up music CDs
$36.89 Uncovered from a stack of moldy boxes in a weathered garage, 47 mangled master tapes of disco jams and early rap cuts finally get their chance to see the light of day on Don't Stop: Recording Tap. Jeremiah Yisrael's short-lived Tap label only issued a few 12"s between 1981-1983, none of which would receive any airplay or acclaim, but in that time he managed to capture a stunning document of the underground boogie sounds of nighttime in New York City on his reel to reel. His paranoia with recording contracts squashed the potential of bigger deals for his artists, including one for Missy Dee with Sugar Hill Records, and his acute perfectionism led to endless takes on the cutting room floor, but this same compulsiveness led to some amazing Jordache-bumping dance numbers, meticulously composed and performed repeatedly until the funk had the perfect flavor to satisfy his picky palate. Recruiting R&B veteran Gene Redd, Jr. (who had orchestrated hits for Motown, Chess, and Mercury, among others) to arrange the songs, and then cherry-picking the streets for blossoming talent, he entered his studios with no-namers Jackie Stoudemire, Arnie Love & the Lovettes, Annette Denvil, Magnetism, and Bonnie Freeman along with rappers Fabulous 3 MCs, and Missy Dee & the Melody Crew. Jumping from straight up disco anthems, reggae-infused sunshine soul, to block party raps, leaves the listening experience uneven, as do some of the poorly executed mixes, but the heart and soul of these sessions make this a highly enjoyable listen in the vein of the In Yo Face, Disco Juice, and Sugar Hill Records Story sets. As well as being a great candidate for a dance party disc, the artwork is stunning, including pictures of the masters in their original shabby shape, old photos of the artists, stained sheet music, and a detailed retrospective of how the tapes came to fruition. ~ Jason Lymangrover
