Fast Cars collects previously unearthed vintage live recordings by the highly influential Buzzcocks. From the fast 'n' nervy punk rock of "Breakdown" and "Fast Cars" to the sprawling "Moving Away From the Pulsebeat" and catchy classics in waiting like "Noise Annoys" and "What Do I Get?" (their greatest A-side), there is undeniable proof here that the Buzzcocks, just a couple of years on, were one of the greats. Unfortunately, at only eight songs total and around 25 minutes in length, the album is too brief (it's unlikely this is a complete performance). There isn't much information offered (or known?) either, other than that it was captured in 1977 (though it may in fact be from 1978). Surprisingly, the quality of the recordings is quite good, though the editing of the tracks is often choppy and jarring. Music as exciting as this transcends any packaging problems, though, and even after 25 years in the ground, Fast Cars is still a living, breathing, pogo-inducing document from one of the most important bands of the original punk era. ~ Bart Bealmear

This is a previously unreleased 1977 live recording from one of the most influential punk bands ever. It's full of energy, ear-catching melodies, driving guitars and biting lyrics, and contains their anthems "Noise Annoys" and "What Do I Get?".

Recording information: 1977.

Adam Lambert For Your Entertainment CD  (2009)

Fast Cars album
CD $11.18  SALE 3.8 stars Top 50
With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen pop. All this makes For Your Entertainment very, very modern in a way few mainstream pop albums are in 2009, whether they're products of the American Idol/19 machine or not: Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Rivers Cuomo, P!nk, Lady GaGa, Linda Perry, Ryan Tedder, Muse's Matthew Bellamy, and Justin Hawkins of the Darkness all elbow each other for space here, ...

Bon Jovi's 2007 effort, LOST HIGHWAY, found New Jersey's finest brandishing a Nashville-tinged, commercial rock/country crossover sound that wasn't too far a stretch from their usual arena rocking anthems for the Everyman. And where that album sometimes tried too hard to fit into the conventions of trad country, sacrificing some of ...

With the release of GET LUCKY, Mark Knopfler has made as many solo studio albums as he made group studio albums with Dire Straits, which itself may be a signal that it's time to stop comparing his two careers and simply accept them as separate entities. Of course, since Knopfler was the lead singer, chief instrumentalist, and songwriter for Dire Straits, there are obvious similarities, even if he has taken a deliberately different path as a solo artist. Basically, he's a lot quieter. "Border Reiver," ...

Best Of McCarthy That's All Very Well But... Vinyl LP  (1996) (Import)

Fast Cars CD music
Vinyl Record $28.39
Many politically aware bands emerged in England during Margaret Thatcher's tenure as Prime Minster, but few were as vocal about their negative views of Thatcher's policies as McCarthy. The band fused the awareness and outrage of punk rock to a jangling guitar-pop skeleton and created rapid-fire pop gems that glistened with razor-edged sarcasm. It should be noted that THAT'S ALL VERY WELL BUTà THE BEST OF MCCARTHY is not a "best of" ...

Nekromantix Brought Back To Life Vinyl LP  (2005)

Fast Cars CD music
Vinyl Record $14.79
Brought Back to Life offers more psychobilly madness from Denmark's Nekromantix. The thrumming pulse of ringleader Kim Nekroman's coffin-shaped bass sits at the center of these songs, surrounded by approximations of rockabilly by guitarist Ian Dawn and drummer Grim Tim. It's approximations because Nekromantix are more interested in establishing an overall feel than nodding to traditionalism. Like the Misfits, who were more concerned with their showmanship and spooky overtones than adhering to any punk rock code, Nekromantix are happily enveloped in a world of zombies and evil things who prey in the night. If they go on a date, it's only to the monster movies. In fact love in Nekromantix world is kind of creepy, as "Nekrofelia" proves. An off-kilter version of the 1950s teen drama song (think "Last Kiss" by J. Frank Wilson), it deals with letters from beyond the grave and streaking graveyards out of love. None of this will be new to any Nekromantix or psychobilly fan. But the trio gets points for sticking so faithfully to a rather limited sound. ~ Johnny Loftus Brought Back to Life Again is a reissue of Nekromantix's 1992 album Brought Back to Life, this time around appearing through Hellcat/Epitaph. Straightforward psychobilly is the name of the game here. The thrumming pulse of ringleader Kim Nekroman's coffin-shaped bass sits at the center of these songs, surrounded by approximations of rockabilly by guitarist ...
