James Stewart portrays a bounty hunter in a landmark, character-driven film that's "one of the best Westerns ever made" (Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide). After being duped by his faithless wife, Howard Kemp, a Civil War veteran and former rancher, accepts work as a bounty hunter.
His assignment: bring back a ferret-eyed outlaw from the Colorado Rockies and collect $5,000. Just enough money, Kemp figures, to invest in another ranch. Two rather shifty men, a disgraced cavalryman and a piggish guide, are ordered to assist Kemp.
The hunters find their prey, Ben Vandergroat, with ease. They tie him up and head back. But the outlaw has criminal savvy to spare. Through a series of mind games that play on each man's greed, Vandergroat pits the bounty hunters against one another.
Now, for Kemp, staying alive takes precedence over starting a new life! James Stewart stars as a bounty hunter tracking down a vicious outlaw and his beautiful companion. During the pursuit, Stewart picks up two traveling mercenaries who join him in his quest. Academy Award Nominations: Best Story and Screenplay. THE NAKED SPUR was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1997.
Shot on location in the Colorado Rockies.

Naked Spur DVD Naked Spur, The
"Plain arithmetic. Money splits better two ways instead of three," smooth-talking outlaw Ben Vandergroat reasons to his captors, three bounty hunters thrown together by chance. They're taking him to justice in Abilene, but Ben has other ideas. If he can set the men against each other ? play on their greed, their fears, their vanities ? he may be able to make his break to freedom.
In the third of his five landmark Anthony Mann-directed westerns, James Stewart stars as the relentless leader of bounty hunters caught in the snare of the hunted (Robert Ryan). Tough, sweating with tension, and towering as tall as its breathtaking Colorado Rockies setting, The Naked Spur is simply "one of the best Westerns ever made" (Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide).

$14.45 THE CHEYENNE SOCIAL CLUB: Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda play perfectly off each other in this witty Western comedy. Stewart is John O'Hanlan, a career cowboy who rides to Cheyenne when he learns that his brother has bequeathed him his business there. Fonda is his faithful sidekick, Harley Sullivan, who can't give O'Hanlan a straight answer as to why he has ridden at O'Hanlan's side for the last 10 years. When they finally arrive in Cheyenne, it is only to discover--to O'Hanlan's horror and Sullivan's delight--that the business O'Hanlan has inherited is the popular local cathouse. When O'Hanlan decides to shut the house down, the instant popularity he had enjoyed in Cheyenne turns into a townwide cold shoulder. The cowboy is still determined to become a "man of property," though, and turn the place into a boarding house--until his lawyer's revelations and a town bully's actions change his mind. The low-key O'Hanlan gears up for battle and must decide which way his life will blow in the winds of fortune. Shirley Jones heads up the gaggle of lovely working girls O'Hanlan inherits. The film owes much of its appeal to the clever, engaging banter between the dry, ingenuous Stewart and Fonda's charming ...

$13.19 Based on the novel by Armistead Maupin, TALES OF THE CITY chronicled the lives of six apartment dwellers in a complex owned by an eccentric during the 1970s. This second sequel (following MORE TALES OF THE CITY) to the original finds the 1970s over and the 1980s just beginning. Set in 1981, FURTHER TALES once again follows the residents of landlady Anna Madrigal's building, who have all matured since the last installment of the series. Mary Ann (Linney) has become a career woman focused on becoming a TV journalist and has even persuaded former ladies' man Brian to settle down with her. A few new faces from beyond Barbary Lane change the look of the series, but Mr. Maupin's combination of big city life and small town relationships help keep FURTHER TALES just as charming and engrossing as the original.
