Dirty Linen (p.82) - "Harada and guest pedal-steel guitarist Grant Johnson blaze faster and hotter than an out-of-control prairie fire. A sonic shoot-out, to say the least." No Depression (p.108) - "NORTH OF BAKERSFIELD highlights the quintet's considerable talent and range as it reads through hardcore honky-tonk, rockabilly and vintage country swing." North Of Bakersfield
$12.79 Black Sabbath had put itself back on track both musically and commercially with the 1980 album HEAVEN AND HELL, as the addition of new vocalist Ronnie James Dio was the shot in the arm Sabbath needed. A follow-up was released one year later, MOB RULES, which follows in the same mega-decibel approach as its predecessor. While it is still a vast improvement over Sabbath's final two albums with Ozzy Osbourne (1976's TECHNICAL ECSTASY and 1978's NEVER SAY DIE), it doesn't exactly match the inspired performances and top compositions featured on HEAVEN AND HELL.
The opening track, "Turn Up the Night," kicks off the album with a jolt of electricity, while other hard rocking highlights include the mid-paced "Voodoo" and the raging title track--the latter would be featured on the soundtrack to the cult animated movie, HEAVY METAL. Another ...
| | Bill Kirchen Hammer Of The Honky-Tonk Gods CD (2006)
North Of Bakersfield
$14.59 The title cut of Bill Kirchen's seventh solo album, Hammer of the Honky-Tonk Gods, is a loving tribute to the Fender Telecaster, the axe that's been Kirchen's instrument of choice since he started picking with Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen in 1967, but while there's plenty of fine guitar work on this album (which from Kirchen should go without saying), this isn't the straight-ahead honky tonk session you might expect given Kirchen's back catalog. While the title cut and "Get a Little Goner" would sound great pouring out of any beer joint's jukebox, Hammer of the Honky-Tonk Gods is one of Kirchen's most eclectic sets to date, with the bandleader demonstrating his skills on the acoustic swing of "One More Day," offering up a slow and slinky cover of "Devil with a Blue Dress On," laying out some prime rockabilly on "Heart of Gold" that would do the Sun Studio proud, delivering a potent countrypolitan weeper in "Skid Row in My Mind," and closing out the set with a tear-jerking version of Arthur Alexander's "If It's Really Got to Be This Way." (Even more significantly, there isn't a single song about trucks to be found!) While Kirchen is still a top-rank guitar man judging from his work here, these sessions find him laying back just a bit, and rather than blazing through his solos, he aims for an ensemble feel, and with his band ...
| | Lucinda Williams West CD (2007) Digipak
North Of Bakersfield
$11.45 Like Billie Holiday, John Lee Hooker, and Kurt Cobain, among others, Lucinda Williams is an artist with that certain difficult-to-define quality, the ability to channel the collective soul through a voice that is intimate, personal, and entirely her own. WEST, Williams's 2007 release, bears all the hallmarks of her best work: excellent songcraft, poetically tough lyrics, and her angel-on-morphine voice. As an album, it is her most consistent and appealing since 1998's CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD.
Williams's seemingly odd choice to work with mainstream pop producer Hal Willner works wonderfully. Willner built the album up from Williams's demo recordings, keeping ...

| | Ruby Dee & The Snakehandlers Miles From Home CD (2008)
North Of Bakersfield
$12.55 Ruby Dee & the Snakehandlers play rockabilly, a genre it's hard to take seriously in the 21st century, but the band strikes the perfect balance between campy humor, reverent respect, and the kind of first-class musicianship that's necessary to pull off the style. Ruby Dee Philippa grew up in northern California, Texas, and Alaska, and her larger than life personality comes across in every note she sings. Guitarist Jorge Harada has the high hair and monster chops to spare, but he usually keeps himself reigned in to deliver short, sharp solos that complement Dee's barely restrained vocals. The rhythm section -- Sean Hudson bass and Kipp Crawford on drums -- keeps the beats driving and basic. Even ballads like "Comes a Time" sound dangerous. It's a smoky, twang-heavy torch song with a blue "Patsy Cline" vibe, and Dee's understated vocal makes it a real heartbreaker. But it's on the rockers that this gang really shines. Dee's vocals are always on the brink of hysteria, but she maintains the restraint that makes a great country singer. "Shameful Breaker" rides a rolling backbeat ...
