Stu Goldberg, formerly keyboardist with the Mahevishnu Orchestra, John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola, Wayne shorter, Billy Cobham, Jack Bruce, Freddie Hubbard and others leads this burning album on piano featuring his Jazz quartet playing eight original Goldbe
Dedication is the follow-up to pianist/composer Stu Goldberg's much-heralded release of 2002, titled Going Home. It features eight original compositions filled with intricate interplay, florid improvisation, and tight ensemble passages from the pianist alongside bassist Jeff Falkner, drummer David Renick, and Kenny Goldberg on saxes and flute. The innovative pianist, who played with some of the most daring fusion artists of the '70s -- including Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell, Alphonse Mouzon, and Wayne Shorter -- continues to make his mark in the 21st century with a genuine sense of the depth and range of straight-ahead jazz. Opening with "Morning Star," a light, beautiful piece with Kenny Goldberg's flute out front on the melody, the ensemble offers the listener variety and the pacing necessary for a truly rewarding aural experience that sustains interest. Each player's solo is clean, articulate, and is played with a healthy sense of adventure. "Winter Clouds" is just the opposite -- a beautiful, pensive, introspective ballad that features Stu Goldberg alone on the acoustic piano. He provides a vivid pictorial through arpeggios and chord changes that suggest the airy floatation and dissipation of clouds on a winter day. This is a lovely song that is both relaxing and sensitive. Overall, the eight originals and great musicality make Dedication a work of art worthy of addition to any jazz collection. ~ Paula Edelstein
Personnel: Stu Goldberg; Dave Renick, Kenny Goldberg, Jeff Falkner.

Few jazz pianists could ever hope to rival the technical mastery of Art Tatum. From the 1930s on through the `50s, Tatum's dazzling facility made it seem as if two pianists were playing at once. Though he often performed solo, his virtuosity allowed him to make the ...
| | Roy Hargrove Emergence CD (2009)
Dedication album
$13.99 Trumpeter Roy Hargrove has been in some exotic musical environments in the past -- from his various quintets, quartets, his Afro-Cuban outfit Crisol, and his funk band the RH Factor, he's pretty much done it all. And while he's played in various big bands before, he's never led his own until now. Emergence on the Groovin' High imprint features a 19-member big band, playing a set of 11 standards and originals by Hargrove and bandmembers as well as a track written for the leader by none other than pianist Chucho Valdés -- who doesn't appear here. The roots for this project go all the way back to 1995 when Hargrove formed a big band to play the New York Jazz Festival. The group went through many metamorphoses when he played a series of club and festival gigs over the intervening years. The set begins with "Velera," a tune written and arranged by Hargrove. It's a ballad in modal style with extended harmonies and a lovely textural palette. The composer employs restraint to bring forth his gorgeous melody. It's followed by "Ms. Garvey, Ms. Garvey," written and arranged by baritone saxophonist Jason Marshall. It quotes liberally from "Wade in the Water" and "Hit the Road Jack," but is a stomping, raucous blues in its own right with the wide chromatic and ...

Dedication music CDs
$12.09 Bill Challis' claim to fame was as the most significant jazz arranger for the Jean Goldkette and Paul Whiteman Orchestras in the 1920s. By 1936, he was a freelance writer who often worked in the studios. On this recording and the follow-up set (both of which consist of radio transcriptions), Challis heads a large orchestra featuring such notable names as trumpeter Manny Klein, trombonists Jack Jenney and Will Bradley and clarinetist Artie Shaw, along with strings and a vocal quartet (going under the name of Bea and the Bachelors) that includes Bea Wain and Al Rinker. The performances (which include possibly the earliest version of "Let Yourself Go") are essentially ...

Dedication music CDs
$13.25 Brad Leali's second TCB CD (and third as a leader) is an impressive outing, very much in the tradition of Dizzy Gillespie's best Afro-Cuban jazz big bands, though the alto saxophonist has very much found his own voice. The leader's "Special K" proves to be a potent opener, though Jon Faddis' solo is strangely mixed in the background rather than being prominent like Leali's sizzling alto. His title track begins with a narrative argument between him and a female who is evidently departing, which gets a bit tiresome but fades as a swinging samba brings in the full band. The great Frank Foster arranged Leali's "Priority Soul," a slinky soul-jazz number, while Claus Raible revives the late Lee Morgan's overlooked hard bop gem "Seconds Best" with a percolating chart. Tommy James' inventive scoring of "The Pink Panther" is a bit darker than in its typical settings but swings like mad, driven by the superb brass and reed ensemble work. This is a fun session and it should be of great interest to fans of Latin jazz and bop. ~ Ken Dryden
