Stormy Weather music CDs
$14.95 Many people think of smooth jazz as something that didn't start until the 1980s, but arguably, smooth jazz started around 1966-1968 with the overtly commercial, pop-drenched albums that guitarist Wes Montgomery recorded during the last few years of his life. Love it or hate it, Montgomery's more commercial output had a major impact on Peter White and many other guitarists who have contributed to smooth jazz (including George Benson, Lee Ritenour, Earl Klugh, Chuck Loeb, and Henry Johnson). Musically, a lot has changed since the '60s, but the more things change in music, the more they inevitably stay the same -- and 2009 found White (like Montgomery 41, 42, and 43 years earlier) still struggling with a desire to improvise and a desire for mass acceptance (the thing that jazz, for the most part, lost after World War II). Of course, one doesn't necessarily rule out the another; the late saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr. knew how to be commercial and adventurous at the same time, but most smooth jazz artists play it way too safe -- which is what White usually does on Good Day. This 2009 release is, on the whole, an album of pleasant but not very memorable background music; White usually sounds like he is yearning to let loose as an improviser but has to hold back because he dare not offend the smooth jazz/NAC stations that have been playing his recordings ...
| | Tord Gustavsen Ground CD (2005)
Stormy Weather songs
$14.05 In the proto-typical Scandinavian ECM style of modern jazz oriented music, pianist Tord Gustavsen follows the path of previous progenitors influenced by Bill Evans, forged by Keith Jarrett, and extended by the likes of Mike Nock. This is certainly late-night, nocturnal music, completely reserved and relaxing, ultra-melodic, calm, peaceful, and non-threatening. Rarely does a tempo move beyond medium, a dynamic merge above mezzo piano, and any mood goes farther than moderately cool. Well within this consistent timbre, Gustavsen and his trio show a modicum of diversity and influences. Fellow ECM labelmate Bobo Stenson's style and technique is most extant during the lilting "Edges of Happiness," "Twins" is spiritual, calm, and light but not somber, while "Token of Tango" is perfectly representative of its title. "Curtains Aside" mixes march rhythm ...

| | Diana Krall When I Look In Your Eyes CD (1998)
Stormy Weather CD music
$11.15 WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance and for Best Engineered Album, Non Classical. WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year.
WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES, a 1999 Verve release, heralds the return of the cool and groovy Latin-tinged jazz of the '60s. Upon hearing the opening track, a bossa-nova-fied version of Irving Berlin's "Let's Face The Music And Dance," one might think he had accidentally put on a Getz/Gilberto record. In fact, it's hard to avoid comparing Krall's breathy alto to that of Astrud Gilberto-particularly on the more samba-flavored numbers.
But Krall ultimately resists comparisons. Her simultaneously textured and smooth tone, warm timbre, and conversational phrasing ...

| | Wynton Marsalis Standard Time Vol. 3: The Resolution Of Romance CD (1990)
Stormy Weather songs
$7.59 Something a bit different for Marsalis brother Wynton: an all-standards and ballads album. This record is a tribute of sorts to the songs that jazzmen throughout history have interpreted with reverence and the twist of personal expression. The program consists of many classic Broadway and Tin Pan Alley tunes--many of which were part of the "songbooks" of Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday. The way Marsalis caresses the melody of "Where or When" (also covered by rockers Dave Edmunds and Dion and the Belmonts) would meet with Sinatra's approval and make Clark Terry or Miles Davis envious.
Marsalis also ...

| | Benny Goodman Class Of '39 CD (2004)
Stormy Weather music CDs
$13.89 This collection of live performances is taken from radio broadcasts and a Carnegie Hall concert, all of them recorded between January and November of 1939. As one would expect, it has kind of a cobbled-together feeling -- more like a sampler than an actual album, complete with abruptly interrupted audience reactions and charmingly quaint introductions by hipster MCs. But that's not to say that the material itself is less than stellar. Most of the performances captured here find Goodman in a shifting quartet setting that features various combinations of Lionel Hampton (on either drums or vibes), Gene Krupa (drums), Jess Stacy (piano), Teddy Wilson (piano), and Buddy Schutz (drums). A quintet featuring bassist Artie Bernstein and drummer Nick Fatool is also represented on several tracks, and a couple of trio numbers are included as well. The repertoire is unsurprising, if thrillingly played: "I've Found a New Baby," "The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise," "Deep Purple," etc. Most exciting are the four sextet performances that end the program, all of which prominently feature the young guitarist Charlie Christian, who had been brought to Goodman's attention by John Hammond and, shortly after these broadcasts, would join New York's bebop mavericks in permanently changing the structure and function of jazz. The sound quality on these recordings is mostly so-so, but all of it is well worth hearing. Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson
Will you take a look at that line-up? Benny's late-'30s small groups just might have been the most talented outfits in jazz history, and the editions you'll hear here on these various 1939 Camel Caravan broadcasts (plus 2 bonus tracks, 'Flying Home' & 'Star Dust', from a Carnegie Hall broadcast from October of that year & 2 more bonus tracks, 'Ac-Dc Current' & 'South Of The Border', taken from two different ...
