| | Dashboard Confessional A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar CD (2003)
Impressions Of Christmas
$10.39 Oscar Wilde famously wrote a whole play about the importance of being earnest; but his was the world of satire, playful winks, and words and phrases that always meant at least two things. Chris Carrabba, the driving force behind Dashboard Confessional, presents earnestness as his calling card, uncut by even a trace of irony. When he coos to a newfound lover "this air is blessed, you share with me" on the second line of Dashboard Confessional's A MARK, A MISSION, A BRAND, A SCAR--the group's third full-length album--one can be assured he means those words with every fiber of his being.
There's a certain refreshment in openness as the adroit lyricist and airbrushed face of emo presents his heart-on-sleeve narratives of tortured nights staying up till dawn pondering love over alluringly elusive acoustic folk guitar landscapes. Carrabba wonders "is there anything worth living/waiting/dying for" on "Am I Missing?" and ...
| | Logan Medland Something In Blue CD (2003)
Impressions Of Christmas
$10.15 There are a lot of jazz artists out there who can play a lot of notes. I'm more interested in creating a mood. The musicians that influenced me the most: Chet Baker, Bill Evans, Miles Davis were masters of creating an emotional moment. I want to create a sense of accessibility to the song, a sense of intimacy with the listener, and to make a song mean something personal. Let face it, listening to someone play a lot of complicated scales is as interesting as reading the dictionary, compared with reading a novel or a poem.Logan Medland began his music career, like a lot of jazz pianists studying the classics. He went to the same high school where classical piano legend Glenn Gould went, and spent his formative years studying and performing Bach, putting in long hours at the piano in the relentless pursuit of technical perfection. He was well on his way to a classical career, concertising across the U.K. and in Canada when he was infected by a love of jazz.He gradually dropped classical music completely and refocussed his creativity on jazz. Within a few years he was performing and touring nationally with the country's best players, developing at a phenomenal rate into a passionate and accomplished player, capable of both sophisticated romanticism, and bluesy soul-influenced lyricism.Reviews: "Memorable work for jazz ...
| | Michael Bowe Cole Porter De-Constructed CD (2004)
Impressions Of Christmas
$14.79 Somewhere between abandon, bliss and oblivion"Deconstructing the daunting genius of Cole Porter is no mean feat. Michael Bowe pulls it off.Bowe has the guts, the grooves, the chops, the sound and sensibility to take Porter apart and put him back together again. The result is joyful re-creation. In striking a sweet balance of grit and grace, Bowe's debut release gives Porter new life. Cole Porter De-Constructed is a bold statement about jazz's ability to widen the structural range of our most beloved standards. Porter's standards are rife with irony. His storytelling is rooted in passionate obsession: "Night and Day," "All of You," "I Get a Kick Out of You." His witty pursuits of love and lust are illuminated by melodies that have haunted generations. Those melodies haunt Bowe's heart, even as he reinvents the rhythmic and harmonic contexts in which Porter's romantic tales are told. "I see these tunes as the jewels of the American Songbook," says Bowe. "The melodies are beautiful, complex and still packed with emotion. By stripping away the original chord progression and reharmonizing the tunes using the melody as the guide, we discover ways to modernize Porter without losing his dazzling sophistication. These songs are cherished classics, and my hope was to deepen their essential brilliance. In doing so, I had the support of three tremendous musicians-pianist Philip Small, bassist Lou Shoch and drummer Steven Brooks. "I think of myself as a straight-ahead player, my musical points of reference hark back to the Forties, Fifties and Sixties. Starting with Lester Young and Charlie Parker as the Yin and Yang of Jazz Saxophone, beyond these giants ...
