Melee BiographyMelee is the 12 member band that is the movement that assaults your body with African and African-American rhythm while daring your mind to be free. Performing vast musical genres including Salsa, R & B, Samba, Son, Timba, Rumba, Gospel, JuJu/Afro-beat, Latin Jazz, Afro-Peruvian, House, Reggae and West African, all of which share both poly-rhythmic melodic and rhythmic foundations, as well as the goal of spiritual uplift, Melee invokes spiritual possession on the dance floor; while the mature songwriting and lyric social consciousness feed the mind and soul. Melee is a musical experience and community bringing the raw energy so seldom seen these days back to performing and playing-dancers and musicians giving all of them selves every performance through music that requires and inspires it. Every Melee show is an entertainment event continuing the traditions of Earth, Wind & Fire, P-funk and James Brown, not just another concert. In 1963, nonviolent protests against segregation in Birmingham, Alabama prompted Eugene "Bull" Connor, the commissioner of Public Safety to say that "riots melees and other forms of civil disobedience will not be tolerated." He subsequently unleashed police dogs and fire hoses on protestors and became an icon in infamy. Yet, the positive self-affirmations through public demonstrations and self-determination embodied by the "riots, melees and civil disobedience" were positive influences for Yorel Lashley, band founder, and led him to honor those events and similar struggles throughout history by attempting to carry them forward through a musical project, "Melee"-causing unrest of a musical kind-revolution, movement, joy and dance. Explaining the historical moment that gave birth to Melee, Lashley explains, "I have written 12 previously unrecorded musical pieces and I continue to write music that ranges across many genres because I believe that due to globalization we have reached an important historical moment for music, and art more generally, because my generation has had the fortune of not only being exposed to music from all over the world, but has actually grown up with American and non-American musical forms as integral elements of our daily lives. The sharing of art forms between different parts of the world has enlarged our vocabularies for artistic expression and given birth to new genres and ideas."
